I use the Tamiya acrylic clears for most of my clearing. It's a decent clear without the glaring, unrealistic shine that some clears seem to have, and it is safe over everything, and is non-yellowing. I will sometimes use Alclad clears, mostly because I just happen to have some on hand and the results look good, but they are lacquer, so may react with enamels. However, having said that, I don't use clear coats on many builds if the paint is a solid colour, and most of my builds are solid colours. On metallics I always use a clear.

Roger, I am one of probably a half-dozen or so car modellers on the planet that has never shot Tamiya TS clear over anything. There is no particular reason for this, I just always had something else around when I needed a clear.

Yup, me too. Been using them since I was 7 years old, and still do. Those UFO thingies look pretty cool, though.

For benign and easy to use clear coats, I use Tamiya acrylics. Safe over anything, and available in gloss, flat, and semi-gloss. If I want a sheen in between those choices, I mix them to get what I want. For example, if semi-gloss still has a bit too much texture, I mix it 1:1 with gloss, or mix it 1:1 with flat if I want a bit more texture but not dead flat. An added bonus with acrylics is they don't yellow over time, which most enamel clears will do.

Glad you eventually got on the right path. The most surprising thing I found in your email is that Gravity USA is still in business. The overwhelming instances of non-existent customer service should have resulted in their shutting down years ago. You made the right call going to Spain.

Look into book binding leather. Very thin and lots of colour variety. Google it up for more info. Also, there was a topic in the Tips & Tutorials section of the forum discussing upholstering interiors with leather, and book binding leather was discussed. edit: Here's the link

Headlight lenses and other small parts can be attached using clear paint, either acrylic, enamel, or lacquer. I've used Future for small clear parts as well.

Another vote for inexpensive hardware store lacquer thinner. Spray with good ventilation, and preferably a good, half-mask respirator fitted with cartridges for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC).
