Where were you, or have you forgotten?
Ben replied to highway's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I had stayed home from work that day as I was not feeling well. At the time, I didn't have a regular computer, I had WebTV. It was similar to a computer but utilized my TV as the monitor. I was chatting with a girl on the WebTV and all of a sudden she said "OMG are you seeing what is happening in New York???" I clicked from computer mode to TV mode and saw what was happening right before the second plane hit the towers. It didn't seem real. It's still so hard to comprehend! -
I'm getting published. (well, sort of)

Working 1/25 Engine, out of PLASTIC?
Ben replied to SuperStockAndy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
LOL, this brings back memories!!!! A good while back, I think I was about fifteen or so. I was impressed by the detail of an engine block that came in a kit. It had the detail of the piston tops in the cylinders and the lifter hole detail in the valley. I started thinking of how cool it would be to have a 1/25 "working" engine. When I say working, I just mean that the crank could be turned by hand to see the pistons move. So.... I built a crank by using sheet plastic for the counter weights and plastic rod for the journals. I then made the connecting rods by taking short lengths of brass wire and making a "loop" at each end. The pistons were small plastic tube pieces with sheet styrene for the "domes". A small piece of wire was pushed through the sides of the pistons for the "Wrist pins". I then super glued small lengths of aluminum tubing into the block after drilling each cylinder. A flywheel was cut out of sheet plastic. When it was finished, you could take the crank snout and turn it to see the pistons move. It didn't last long though before the journals broke away from the counter weights! LOL It was cool while it lasted though! -

DROOOOL!!!!!!! You got me beat by two chassis kits and the two complete kits!!! How much did you have to fork out for the complete kits? I'm hoping to get them someday! -
It's always cool to see a truck built really well straight out of the box!!!! Nice work!

It takes a little searching but all the parts needed can be found to build an accurate replica. Tony Westwood in England (I'm pretty sure it's England?) mastered and cast the bumper/grill guard, the Duck, mirror heads, correct air tanks and the big roof top air foil. I have all of it here. Really nice stuff but he did quit casting due to lack of interest. A couple different resin casters off the RL700 hood, several casters (myself included) have made the two hole Budd wheels and JBOT makes an awesome decal set that does the tractor and trailer.
-
For one, the ONLY things worth anything in that kit are the front grill guard, winter front and the Rubber Duck hood ornament. The decals are not that great and you can get a set that are fifty times better and accurate from JBOT. The rest of the kit has NOTHING to do with the movie Convoy. That kit was a very POOR attempt by ERTL to make a truck resembling the Rubber Duck. Anyone that would pay over 40.00 or 50.00 for it with intentions of building that truck are going to be very disappointed! Along with the AMT Mack R685ST kit and parts made the aftermarket, a really accurate replica can be made. Second, if I had a friend who was an Indian Giver, an Accuser and wouldn't pay me what he owed me for things I had done for him, the LAST thing I would call him is a "friend"!

So could the Grand National or GNX!

AMT/ERTL 1/25th Livestock Trailer Question
Ben replied to Kansan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You bet! Just so you'll know, there's a truck section on this forum. You'll probably get more responses there on questions you may have. Lots of truck nuts there! (like me!) -

A PLEDGE PIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????? ON YOUR UNIFORM!!!!!!!!!!!????????? -
I hope so! I would think anyone that never heard of Hotwheels was living under a rock! But even then, you'd probably find an old Hotwheel buried under there! LOL
-
Trust me Chuck, your not alone!!!!!!!!!!! If I were to sell half my collection, I could probably buy two houses and a yacht
-
You've never heard of Hotwheels at all????? Wow, I would think it would be very hard not to know what Matchbox or Hotwheels are!!!!!! No matter who I mention it too that I collect them, they know exactly what I'm talking about. Are you from the US originally?
-
I have been collecting them all my life. I have most of the originals but my favorites are the Snake and Mongoose stuff. For a while, ever since they started doing it in 1996, I was collecting two of every car in the "First Editions" series. These started out being fairly easy as they were only issuing 12 cars a year. Then the numbers started increasing per year and everyone and their grandma was buying them up just to resell them at a jacked up price! I got sick of fighting for them just to complete my collection. I recently started again when the Drag Strip Demons came out. I bought several cases in order to get at least two of every car. I ended up with five of some of them! They sure are cool though!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
If you collect them, like I do,Seems there's a good chance you might be missing this one?! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hotwheels-BYE-FOCAL-PURPLE-the-REAL-thing-/270802590473?pt=Diecast_Vehicles&hash=item3f0d179b09

AMT/ERTL 1/25th Livestock Trailer Question
Ben replied to Kansan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Even though the above pictures show the track rods and arms on the same side, The suspension on the livestock trailer should have the rods on the drivers side and the arms on the passenger side. -

AMT/ERTL 1/25th Livestock Trailer Question
Ben replied to Kansan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hey Kasan, that suspension is similar to the one's used on the vans and flatbed that AMT made. The rods and arms go from the bottom of the axle to the the spring perch in front of each axle. I'd have to look at the instructions again but if I remember correctly, the rods go on one side and the arms go on the other. I think this was done so the axles could be adjusted to prevent premature tire wear. -
