  1. Didn't see this before I posted the same. Just read in the new Street Rodder that Richard Zocchi has left us as well
  2. Another hero gone. Pete was the Pete in Pete and Jakes. Rod and custom readers should know his name well. He was also responsible for the resurrection of the So-Cal Speed shop name. RIP, Pete. A car guy's car guy.
  3. I'm waiting for the race version of the Porsche tractor. Wider tires, supercharger, ground effects and livery decals
  4. Definitely on my want list. I can't remember a reason for my not having a go at this one when it was first released and I've wanted one for years mostly for the Derby car. I guess that may have been my wacky show car fascination overriding my musclecar interests.
  5. I just googled the Thingmaker. It may be way more sophisticated than I initially assumed. They developed software for this device that is capable of design from scratch as well as using various templates. Simulations are possible to test range of motion for figures and such. It was engineered to be more friendly for entry-level use. I'm kind of excited about this now.
  6. Scott, I think the time may be near where it might be quite reasonably priced to have your ornament scanned, enlarged in the computer and printed in 3D (pull the hanger out first). I've heard that Mattel is bringing back the Thingmaker name on a $350 3D printer in time for Christmas. Maybe it's good, maybe it's not. But I'm sure that having this tech on this level can only bring good things. It doesn't address the scanner issue as it uses downloadable files.
  7. Thanks again. And now I'm thinking that the base coat was Testor's Metalizer Burnt Metal
  8. Yeah, I've reached that point in life where I really shouldn't rely on memory for important details. My apologies to Pegasus for the slip. I knew it ended in S but I still haven't found the box.
  9. Thanks guys. This isn't based on the movie, it's an artist's interpretation influenced by the description in the novel. I'd tell you who the artist is but I can't find the box. It is an excellent kit. I don't remember what I used for the base color. I do know that it isn't as green as it appears in the top photo. It's closer to the rust color in the bottom one. I did wash it with rust colored detailer and used a few dry pigments and some oils as well under the flat coats. I've built my share of airplanes so the disappearing interior was a bit expected. Disappointing, but not a surprise. I did the inside up anyway. There are bookshelves, a desk with an open book on it, a pipe organ, a two sided couch and a floor globe, maybe more. Peteski is right, once the hull halves are joined you'll never see it again. It was a little hard to keep the long PE pieces true to shape.
  10. I've built both versions of the Revell kit and the AMT. It's comparing apples to something completely different than an apple. Different eras and tooling philosophies. Love Revell's gasser stuff. I think the two Revell kits could stand up well against some of the best kits ever. I used to yearn for Tamiya quality. Now I think Revell is right there. Whatever has changed happened a few years ago. I reviewed a Revell Mustang kit for the magazine, around '09 maybe, I noticed the difference then and mentioned the new style in the review. Now if they could only resolve my customer service issue (why is it taking months to get a window tree for the '64 Chevy pickup?)
  11. I would also definitely check out Fine Scale Modeler's forum. That's where the rivet counters dwell
  12. On second thought I have to retract a statement from above. I did a resin '60 Impala from Don Holthaus for the Oakland Roadster Diorama in the early 90s. Pearl white with red scallops. Way before the Monogram kit.
  13. Looks 1/25 or so to me. While I'm thinking about old racers, I'd love to see the 50's sporty racers done again. C'mon, a new tool of a few of the front engine cars. Scarab, Maser, Lola, Ferrari would be awesome.
  14. And here it is today, in mock up. Reference for this one was a bit scarce. Draggon's pic was about the best and it appears to be the same one the kit is based on. I did find a pretty good article on F3 cars in an older Automobile Quarterly, a hard cover magazine that my Dad had subscribed to since issue 1 in 1962 (take that, interweb!). Most of this class used a Triumph single cylinder as this one has. I added the gauge with a decal and PE bezel. These cars were not cookie cutter, no two were identical. I Could have done a bit more sanding, I missed some small spots and got tired of sanding the others, but this will definitely be shelfworthy. As in nobody comes over anyway so it's just me and I like it. My first full resin kit. Thanks Herb.
  15. Still a few little things to do. The roof is sitting crooked because I didn't push it down all the way for the pic. Everything is a little warped. Good enough for the living room, though I haven't been a boater since I was ten and we moved from the Central Ohio lake I grew up on. The city of origin decals occurred too late to me and led to the graphics being crowded. As a sign guy, that bugs me, but I really wanted the CA tribute on there. Stuff happens. For some reason people living around the lake named their homes. In reference to the family name ours was the Taterpatch. Kinda hated that as a kid. The next place was Taterpatch II. The home I inherited says Taterpatch West on the carport (I was the Tatertot after those were introduced. Hated that too). But then I needed a boat name for this. The Meyers Manx kit had a decal that said Taterchip, interesting. Then the lightbulb moment and I cut the S and r out the 2 letters I didn't need. Oh, well, the legacy continues.
  16. Mattel is scheduled to release a 3D printer resurrecting the Thingmaker moniker by this Christmas. Price should be under $400. Even if this turns out to be inadequate for our needs, It's only the beginning. A good 3D printer would be a boon to any signshop, my vocation in a past life. I've used one that was based on printing by spraying a flour-like substance with a glue, late 90s tech. It worked well enough and the strata lines were minimal. It did have a texture that needed to be removed, though. I wonder how long before large format 3D printers happen. You could print canoes.
  17. Well, now I see why Palmer didn't take over the world. The final piece will definitely be good enough for shelf display (photos in a bit) but overall it has a bunch of issues. First and foremost is the chrome tree. Alclad will be your best friend here. I settled for just stripping the targa band and reshaping the piece with sanding sticks but blueprinting the whole tree and rechroming would go a long way. The deck took finesse, super glue and a dozen rubber bands and then it took some gap filler, good enough. The locators and fit of the interior could have been better. The instrument cluster is nice although not symmetric from side to side. Engraving is wavy and part fit is only fair. The decals match the shape of the gauges but not the flags, the rear flag especially which has the paint lines in deep relief. However, even in that light, I would still label it as muey desirable largely because the subject is so cool. I'm still looking forward to the Owens Twin Outboard.
  18. Well Dragon, I think you've nailed it. Thanks. The silver parts are white metal. Now on to the reference hunt. Any guesses as to the model mfg?
  19. Probably 25 years ago, a friend asked me to safeguard his small stash, I've finally decided that I've waited long enough for him to reclaim it. So, I found this. Can anyone ID it and then can anyone post the instructions? I'm thinking BRM or Cooper but I have no idea. Single cylinder, rear engine, transverse leaf springs.
  20. I ordered mine from Tower about a month ago, it arrived Friday. I've started it but here is what you get. Seems to be just a little big for 1/24. Except for the motor which seems really small for an 8.
  21. Yeah, I mistook Tim's relevant trailer photos for boat photos and ran with the pic of Miss Bud. At least my Soaked Al's Special is on the trailer. I should repost about the Coronado in "All the others" The windows are pre-cut acetate and include the portholes. I pre-ordered from Tower about a month ago. Love Tower Hobbies, especially since moving to this little burg Miss Bud would be an awesome subject for rerelease, this is the only one I've ever seen.
  22. The engine in the Coronado kit is decaled as a Fireball V8. That's the short block in the background of this photo. The rocker covers make it look like a Hemi V6 but the intake looks 8ish. I remember seeing Miss Bud in Detroit when I was about 11
