1/16 Scale Army Vega Funny Car - Finished 10/14/2018
stump replied to Mooneyzs's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Yeah Chris, that's really kool...... Man, what an opportunity....one I would gladly leap at too if given the chance. Now, get back to the bench............................. Hey mate, I feel your pain with the chassis (re-)fabrications....just been through a whole lotta that myself. But you look like you're on the money with it now man. Keep at it. -
George, Chris, Derrick, Bart, Randy and Dave, thanks for all the positives guys. It's a good feeling having this so warmly accepted. George, yes.....really need to get my rear into gear and step back on that baby... Hey, I might make the Datto a tow car for this, huh.. Darn, need to scratch up a trailer next...... Bart and Chris, if you guys gain some benefit from this, I feel very humbled, as I'm being lead by the best bunch of model craftsmen I've ever met.....right here. Dave, you got mail. Started running the lower fuel lines (to manifold base) last night, but I'm thinking of changing the hardware I'm using.....just don't look right. Will try and get an update in over the next few nights guys. Cheers.

Hey Dalton, Yeah, not a whole lot available (as far as I'm aware) just at this time. But that may change in the future..... Check out Tim's stuff here @ TDR.....it will whet your apatite for now, and give you ideas of what you may need to buy later. There have been a few decent model kits over the years which lend themselves easily to building a drag version. The later year model Camaro Mike mentioned is probably the most suited, but yes....not the easiest or cheapest to find.

Hey, thanks Chris. I'm gaining heaps of inspiration and enthusiasm from all you guys here. Yeah, the more I look at the hat "as is"....it's really growing on me. So much so, that I just had to see how it would all look, once set up.....So, here's what I got....... NEW fuel return valve installed first. Then it was time to get serious....Valve mounted, hat bolted on......lets see how this goes........ Oh...testing a butterfly too....took a few attempts to get them to fit neatly, and not bind up when turned..... I still need to make a start on the linkage for the hat, so that will probably be next up..... Give the hat a good week (of fine weather.. ) to cure a bit, then I'll hit it again with black and clearcoat. As it sits, I'm pretty pleased with the results, tho the idea of doing carbon is out there, I fear I would mess it up.... So black it is. Stay tuned guys, I hope to get a couple of decent nights work this week, plus we're now on daylight saving, giving me that extra hour of an afternoon. Thanks again for stickin' by guys Greg

Chris, yes he does. TDR @ Shapeways -
Now.....I'm asking for a little help here.... MOST hats these days are made from Carbon, yes.? Is there anything wrong with painting carbon?? 'Cause I really like how it looks in gloss black. And I don't know that I have the feel for applying a bucket load of carbon decal...... Another light rub back, another coat of black and then a good coating of clear will finish this puppy up in my book. What's your thoughts guys ? Back with some more before too long guys, and thanks for sticking around. cheers Greg

Got time to shoot some colour on the fuel pump. Base coat of Tamiya Silver, followed by a coat of Mr. Colour clear red. Now.....this next part I was not real sure on. If anyone can help, it would be great... I've really struggled to find reference for where the lower distribution block SHOULD mount.....?? A lot of cars appear to feed from the top block only, but I have several photos showing lines which definitely exit from a low position... I mounted mine on the rear of the blower manifold. I'm pretending I used a downward deflector on my burst panel. In between waiting on glue and paint to set up, I got started on a fuel/oil cell. It's only very rough at the moment, sorry..... Continues......

Thanks Joe and Bart. Guys, to be honest, I can't recall where I got those lines. I think (?) they were Modellers from Japan. Had them so long the packaging has gone. Really wish it was still available, but it's been discontinued for near on 10 years at a guess.... I got some Prestons car parts braid from Model Roundup last week, it arrived with my 1/12 Mustang. The braid looks very good and most of my other lines will be run using that. It compress' and stretches quite well, so I'm hoping it will do the couple of sizes I need. Well, the motor building (parts) has gone pretty smoothly, aside from messing up a fuel return valve (blocked off with a bolt, CA'd in place. ) I quickly made a new one, but still need to paint it up. Main fuel valve I made an angle bracket from flattened aluminium tube to secure it to the hat. Adaptor plate for mounting the hat. Fuel block added to it as well. NEW return valve on the left. Continues......

Haha Good stuff mate.

Mmmmm....... Yes in deed.....sweet looking box Dave. (just ordered 2 sets. ) For sale 1 x home-built 3-speed Lenco (1/12 scale) FREE to the right home. -
Bart, you will not be disappointed my friend. And thanks for adding the link Joe. As Dave mentioned, Shapeways do the 3D printing for Tim @ TDR. Based in the Netherlands, and quite a big business venture by all accounts. I have sent and received several emails with them, and they are only too willing AND eager to help us modellers. They have purchased some newer, bigger printers to help cope with demand. I sent pics of my Camaro to the guy I've been dealing with, and he offered to buy it. Well, the last few days/nights have all been about the motor...... Started by deciding on where/how to run an oil system. Only basic, will run through a filter and on to a scavenge tank. Basic oil pump....nothing to flashy. It will be tucked down low and be barely visible.... Sump bolted on, lines run and connected..... Blue and red AN fittings detailed with Sharpies. (thanks Romell) This took an amazing amount of time.....drilled and tapped the injector line holes. I actually drilled 3 for each inlet, from reference, it appears they generally just use a single port. I added bolts to simulate 'block off' plugs. The 'hat' is getting very (very) close....Will undercoat tomorrow and maybe add some black. Then some carbon decal..... Fuel shut-off valve/distribution block. Hope to get a good bit more done tonight and tomorrow (public holiday) and get another update in for you's. Stay tuned, and thanks for stickin' by. And don't forget to hurl any Q's you may have.... cheers guys Greg

Oh jumpin' fatman, get me my cape.......... Bill, this thing is AMAZING !!.....No, no, wait....................INCREDIBLY AMAZING !! LOVE how the grill and headlights come up, they look good enough to go into a 1:1 resto.
-
Derrick, you know me......after putting the time into modifying the 3-hole into a shotgun.....I'd go with that. Looks awesome man, and I think both would suit equally, but I made my choice....

SANTIAGO, that IS some wild work (read = incredible... ) you're doing there mate, and a FANtastic tribute as well. I really liked the video, that's a nice touch, as it allows us to see the parts in action..That's something pics can't do as well. Really (really) looking forward to seeing this come alive with paint man.

Neat stuff Chris. The seat will surely be at minimum, a 100% improvement of original. Great work. And nothing like the odd "real" nut'n'bolt thrown in to add bucket loads of visual impact. Tedious, but well worth the time. -
Hey guys, not a huge update I'm sorry , had a few family issues dragging me down lately, so bench time has shrivelled..... What did get me excited yesterday tho, my very welcome package arrived from Tim @ TDR Innovations, courtesy of Shapeways. Already given Tim a HUGE pat on the back for his effort, thanks again Tim. But a brief (no pic) update for you'll...... I've been tweaking the 3-hole injector hat, yes...that dreaded putty has almost cured. Crikey, how long has that been.....? Messing with some fuel and oil lines as well, now that I have my full selection of AN fittings from Rob. Plumbing the fuel and oil pumps. And still looking at getting the motor snuggled down another couple of mm's.....see how I go with that. Ok, who wants pics....?? Apologies in advance for crappy (blurred) pics, I was so excited, I couldn't focus. First up, this IS NOT the final resting place for this, it is just to showcase it. Under side, all very uniform in construction.....= Very nice indeed..... Back..... Wheel tubs. Also got two smaller 1/16 sets. And a Nitrous kit, to go with the "scooped project" at a later date. I've got to hit the shops tomorrow for some primer, so I will get better pics once they are under coated. Stay tuned guys, things are about to get hectic, I hope...... Thanks for looking Greg

Dave, it won't be a problem for you, I can feel something great about to happen again.
-
Nice touch. Might have to try that myself Derrick. With two 1/16 Promods to build, I really don't want both with matching scoops. GREAT work my friend.

Thanks Ken. (thumbs up emoticon needed. ) Man, this is really taking shape Ken, the body looks fantastic, and the chassis work is top shelf mate. -
(pssst) Hey Dave, I know where you can get a half decent 1/12 version if you have trouble finding a 1/8 car to build. Man, I am sooooo tuned in for this next build. Can't wait ! And yes, that sure is one hellova car..

Man, this is getting waaay outta hand Chris. In a great way of course. Hey, I'm keeping this jig idea in mind and will be using it for sure. Makes those headers look way better than stock. Keep at it mate, you're doing a darn fine job. (man, I only just subscribed....thought I already had, sorry mate. )
