It's been quite some time, but here's some first-stage mock-up. This car is going to definitely be a shelf model, but I can't wait for it to get re-issued again. I've enjoyed building it and would like to do some different combinations for colors. The interior is assembled and installed, I have a small amount of touch-up to do on the spare-tire cover. The engine turned into a bit of a disaster, so it's also going to be displayed with the hood closed. My first shot at painting a pin-stripe in a VERY long time, possibly ever. Charlie Larkin

What do you drive?

I'm one of the holdouts that still prefer a full-size wagon. At present, I have a 1991 Caprice. 254,000 and change miles. This car isn't much longer for the world, though, as the frame has started to let go, and with the myriad of other repairs it needs, I simply can't keep bailing-wiring and chewing-gumming it back together, so I'm looking for a new car. This was taken a couple months ago at the Wachusett Reservoir in West Boylston, Ma., in the background is The Old Stone Church. When the reservoir was built, most of West Boylston was flooded after being torn down. Some buildings were moved, but the old Baptist Church, seen here, is one of the few surviving buildings built prior to about 1890. Charlie Larkin -
Well, I can finally contribute something to this. My "workbench" for now is a small tray table in the living room, where I also more-or-less live until we can either get the house de-screwed up or I can move back out of my parents' house. Charlie Larkin

Looking good, Mike. That color looks really nice on it. Charlie Larkin

New New Beetle!

Funny you say that, I was thinking the same thing. Actually, to be honest, I rather like it. Charlie Larkin -
Missed this when you first posted it, Mike. That looks very nice. The light blue/black isn't a bad combination at all, either. I have one of those downstairs, never did figure out how I wanted to build it, and you've given me some ideas. Charlie Larkin

Interesting mild custom; nice execution. Charlie Larkin

The Impala SS used 17" rims with something in the order of P235/55R-17 BF Goodrich Comp T/As as the original equipment. Coming out nicely, Wayne, as everything you do does. Charlie Larkin

Stalled projects; we all have them.

It's all on hold until I have a little more space to build. A 12x18" wobbly tray table isn't quite enough. Charlie Larkin -
479 would be the GM Code. MCW has that available. Another possible color it might have been was Copper Maroon, a 1955 Chevy color. I don't believe that's a metallic. Show us progress, Jeff. Sounds like a great project. Charlie Larkin

I want one of those phones in my car....seriously. I wonder if the insides could be updated to work with the modern systems? Looking good, Mike. Charlie Larkin

1 ounce jar of paint enough? 1/25 scale
charlie8575 replied to DrewCfromSC's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
One piece of advice I was once given was buy a little more if it's light colors to make sure you have enough to cover. For darker colors, you may not need as much to achieve the desired coverage. As a suggestion, MCW sells separate one-ounce bottles now. I'd recommend buying a two-ounce bottle and "boxing" the paint, or mixing it together, for maximum uniformity. Even though it'll be the same batch most likely, it'll ensure absolute consistency. Charlie Larkin -
Dad told me about this, and I took a look at it. The black paint mixed with copper flecks creates some interesting effects, too. Not a bad-looking car, it has some very neat features. Watch the gas cap. It'll be self-explanatory. Charlie Larkin

From the look of the roof, you could use an MCW Biscayne as a start for a Caprice. The roofs aren't too different, merely remove the posts and window frames, substitute the corrected interior, photo-etch trim, and you have a Caprice. Nice job on that build, for the record. Charlie Larkin

I missed this? Nice job on this, based on the description of how you modified it in the other post. Harry-perhaps the two posts could be combined and moved to On the Shelf? Charlie Larkin

Car Hauler & Tractor - Fall 1956
charlie8575 replied to Danno's topic in Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Inspiring! Very nice job on that. I guess with a little fiddling, the AMT kit can be made into a c. 1950s transport. Do you know if he made any modifications to the trailer? Charlie Larkin -
Brush paints: Testors, Humbrol, Tamiya and the Testors Model Master line are all good choices, provided they're used correctly. That means prime underneath and following the mixing directions. I've used Model Master Acryl also, and found it to be quite good. For primer, I almost exclusively use either Valspar/Plasti-Kote or Dupli-Color if I need to, I prefer Plasti-Kote, it's thinner and the solvent isn't quite as strong. Spray paints: I've used Testors and Model Master enamels, and they work well, again, if you prime underneath them. I also use Dupli-Color and Plasti-Kote automotive touch-up paints. I haven't used the Model Master lacquer or Tamiya lacquers, but both are said to be very good. Airbrushes: I've used Badgers before, and they're all right. I have an Aztek A320 now, which is nice because it's very easy to clean. I'm thinking of trying a Paasche next time. Whatever you do, try to get a compressor, it's well worth it. I have the Testors Mighty-Mite. It's small, not particularly powerful, but it's good for airbrushing, and it's not too expensive. As previously stated, any paint will airbrush well if you thin it enough. Acrylics airbrush very nicely, just be sure to use the manufacturer's thinner for it, as I've found alcohol can flatten the paint. For cleaning, 91% alcohol works beautifully. To remove dried acrylic paint, use Model Master Acryl Dried Acrylic paint remover. It works like a charm- BUT FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS TO THE LETTER! Good luck. Charlie Larkin

Thank you to all of you. This is a great video that while not a "tribute," pays a rousing respect to those in the service, and before. Enjoy it.

I've had pretty good luck with the homemade foil. I can never get Bare Metal to work because it's so thin, it always does things I don't want it to do, like tear. The kitchen foil takes some tinkering, but works well with some practice. One suggestion I will make is don't skimp on using the adhesive, use plenty, but don't go too overboard, either.
