Nice job on the diorama. I like the building, very realistic-looking. Charlie Larkin

Wait a few minutes, and Photobucket's working again. I decided to try brushing the chassis as it's what I had on hand and don't really have anyplace to do any airbrushing at the moment. I used Tamyia semi-gloss black, and it looks pretty good. The tires will probably get another coat of flat white to improve their appearance. One thing I wasn't clear on from the directions, was this little box. It didn't say if it was intended for all versions. I put it on anyway and can remove it if I need to. Anyone? Enjoy. Sadly, like many of the 1:1 cars, it seems all we ever see of 1932 Fords are street and hot-rods, racers and so forth. I don't really build any of those things, and have begun building an AMT 1932 Model B as a stock car. I'm about 50% of the way to completion. The colors I've selected will be Model Master Light Ivory with Sand Beige fenders and trim. The interior has been painted with Rust-Oleum American Accents Taupe, which is still a bit glossy for my liking. I'll be hitting it with some Model Master semi-gloss and the top with Dullcote. The only major problem I've had with it was the engine. I think a combination of worn molds and Chinese/RC2 "quality control" conspired, and left a big gap I just can't get rid of. But, where the engine is pretty well hidden at the front, I'm not going to worry about it too much. I still have detailing to do to the engine. The paint is Testors flat green of some kind, I think Olive Drab. It came in one of the little sets I picked up a few years ago when I found most of my paint had dried out. I've discovered that Photobucket is down for maintainance at the moment, so I'll try to get some pictures up within the next 24 hours. Charlie Larkin

I just painted the interior for a 1932 Ford roadster and the paint (Rust-Oleum American Accents taupe) was labeled "satin," but it still came out rather glossy. I'm going to hit it with some type of satin clear-coat to tone it down, and some Dullcote for the folded top. I'd personally recommend trying to use one of the present-generation satin-finish spray cans, such as Krylon or and of the True Value/Do-it Best/Ace sprays out there and see if those are to your liking, and then, if you want a little more sheen in certain areas, buff it with a camera lens-cleaning cloth. Nice job on the PT. As to focus, all the settings in the world won't make a lick of difference if the camera is either too close to the subject or the camera isn't being held steady. I still shoot film myself for about 98% of my pictures with stuff that goes online-only shot with a small digital, but even then, digital does have that one nice feature: erase. Keep taking pictures of any and everything until you get them to come out the way you want them to. The more pictures you take, the better they'll be. You might also want to consider getting a disposable 35 mm camera, most of which have fixed lenses. That'll help you practice with focus and perspective, forcing you get it right so the pictures come out looking good. Charlie Larkin

Boy, now I really wish I could go Saturday! I suspect, though, I'll see you at Mid-Atlantic NNL. Nice job. Charlie Larkin

Thanks for the building tip, Ken. I'm hoping to get one of these this summer if work picks back up again. Charlie Larkin -
Info on trip to NNL East, best route
charlie8575 replied to Jon Cole's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Jon, I'm going to agree with Mike on this. 84->87 is probably the easiest way to go. Having gone 95 before, I'll attest that the traffic can be very bad, and the last time I was going through there, everything from New Haven to Stratford was ripped to shreds on 95. For you, I'd recommend 91->84->87->follow directions in link. As a sample, I did a map from New Paltz, N.Y., near where my friend I was going to stay with before canceling the trip due to money issues lives, to Wayne. The time might be a little off, but it'll give you the basic idea. I would say you can easily subtract 20-30 minutes from that figure. +Pal+Dr&2z=07470&2y=US&2l=40.913605&2g=-74.26223&2v=BLOCK]Mapquest Enjoy your trip! Charlie Larkin -
Nice list! I'm deciding what to do now, and will have an answer within the next 24 hours. And no, I don't wear a bowtie and flower to a show; I'm not quite that bad! That picture was actually from my Eastern Star chapter's installation last year. I may, however, pack a blazer if the blue lodge in Towson is meeting Friday evening... Charlie Larkin

Kris, I think you're thinking of Bar Mills Models in Maine. They make some very nice signs and aren't too expensive. There are a couple of other companies that do them as well, but Bar Mills is the one that comes to mind first. Charlie Larkin

Ouch. At least no permanent damage to you or anything else, which is good. Charlie Larkin

Duplacolor...5 oz cans
charlie8575 replied to MikeMc's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
While I was on my way home from the dentist, I found Benny's, a local discounter, had substantial mark-down on Dupli-Color, so I bought a can of T150 truck paint, which is GM Dark Blue metallic, and is very, very close for many years of GM, and some Chrysler dark blues from the 60s-early 90s. Big can, but plenty of use in it. Charlie Larkin -
If I could handle a manual transmission, I'd seriously consider taking you up on it, Mike. Or we could always take mine. Let me give it some thought. Charlie Larkin

Who makes/made the CR-V kit? I'm getting some terrible ideas (but some very good ones..) Charlie Larkin -
Fantastic save and rebuild. And a great job with the taillights. I do so wish I was going to NNL-East this year, hopefully next year. Charlie Larkin

Don't put anything bigger than an Isetta on it.... It's really cute. I like it. Charlie Larkin

Looking really good! I like the C-Bodies of that era, and yours is especially nice looking. Charlie Larkin

Well, I can't make NNL East, but I can make this show I think. Lyle, do you know who the vendors will be yet, or is that still being worked out? I'm just trying to figure out how much money I should try to bring. At this, or any show, look for me, and be sure to introduce yourself! I'm on the far right with the striped bowtie. Charlie Larkin

Well, I was going to go. The town I'd been doing some work for recently failed to pay me, resulting in their owing me nearly a month's pay. For this, I have a few bills to catch up now, so there's no way I can do it. I was going to be on a limited budget to start with, and this really screwed it up. Always next year, I guess... Great idea for display cases
charlie8575 replied to 2002p51's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That's pretty much an idea of what I had to do with my cases I want to build, Jim. Yours came out nicely. As to the fancy ones....I could probably do those for a whole lot less, as well. Perhaps it's something to try at some point. On my computer which is currently not being used, I had the maker of those things bookmarked. Does anyone know the manufacturer just so we can go and oogle? Charlie Larkin -
Duplacolor...5 oz cans
charlie8575 replied to MikeMc's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
When it was first posted that Advance was offering massive discounts on Dupli-Color, I went to two, and found they had either returned or sold almost everything. I eventually settled on a light blue for my GTO. As to the narrower selection of paint colors, it's simply reflective of the fewer choices in colors available in recent model years. Up until about fifteen years ago, you used to be able to order a whole rainbow of colors and combinations, but not anymore, now all we have is bland, ugly, or colors that are actually hard to classify as to exactly what they are. Auto Zone still has a good selection of the 5-oz. cans, and I plan on buying a few. You might also want to try Plasti-Kote, as they keep a pretty good selection for older cars, too. Charlie Larkin -
The Packard taillights really look nice on the Buick. Nice touch. Well-done overall. Charlie Larkin

Piston or turbofan Allison? Either way, one of those in a Smugmobile on a Monster truck chassis would be hilarious. It's "green," you're recycling parts! Charlie Larkin -
I think it's him that offers the '53 Pontiac sedan delivery. That one is on my "gotta-get-it" list. I love s/ds, and Pontiacs are about my favorite. It'll also go well with a project I have in mind. Does anyone know what chassis will work well? I'm thinking a stretched AMT '51 Chevy. The wheels and tires I can come up with easily enough. Charlie Larkin
