My but ain't that pretty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The colour suits that car perfectly... It is amazing how the colour makes or breaks a model and while I have seen a whack of '58 Impala's in my day, I have to say that few came close to being as pretty as yours. Is that a factory colour? How about some pctures of your '60 as you work on it. What colours do you have in mind for that one?

Nice build!!!!!!!!!!!! It;s kind of hard to tell but the blue that you used is similiar to the one that I want to use on my new project. I did some research today and there are quite a few subtle differences between the Impala and Caprice. I sure do like that hide away headlight option though. What colour did you do the interior on your car? My wife drives this '70 Impala hardtop in the summer months and we really enjoy the car. It's pretty plain - 350, auto with a factory AM 8 track stereo. I bought a set of rally wheels for it for next summer.. although I sure do like the stock wheel covers.. There used to be a VERY nice '69 Caprice coupe in my area here - it was a VERY pretty blue with a black vinyl top and a black interior - factory 427 car that this snivelly, runny nosed little punk kid bought off an old couple who bought it brand new. He destroyed the car in a matter of months. It was the same colour as the car below and it looked just like this except the vinyl roof was black and it had the rally wheels.. There was another one that showed up several years ago - a brown coupe with factory buckets and console, 327 automatic. The car was rusty but woirth saving and I wanted to buy it so badly but we were short of cash at the time. Well, it sold and the druggy that bought it took the back seat out of it so that he could haul his dogs around in it. *sighs* It had the rally wheels and while the colour was not exactly eye catching, the car was what it was. Last I saw, he had "rat rodded" it.. painted it flat black and it looked like he took a cutting torch to the coil springs and dropped the poor car down so that a speed bump was almost an impossibility. But he was cool, drving around with a car full of dogs and the floor pans scraping the pavement.. oh well - I can't save 'em all.

I believe that American Graffiti really awakened the collecter car market - especially interest in the '58 Chevy. It is without a doubt, one of my all time favorite movies with a clean plot, excellent music and cars and performers who fittheir respective roles perfectly - I think. Everyone looked the part and suited their roles.. Richard Dreyfuss was excellent as was Ron Howard - and Cindy Williams - well.. boy, she sure did look good! Bo Hopkins ( not Jerry Reed - sorry ) was awesome - looking and acting the part with total professionalism.. Toad was good too.. the first nerd As for the cars, I loved the '58 Impala.. Milner's coupe was OK too but I have never been in love with 55 Chevys.. havng said that, I wasn't too thrilled when they destroyed the one at the end. It seemed to me that the car that they rolled was one of the two door sedans as stated but apparently the car that burned was a two door hardtop made to resemble a post car. That makes even me cringe... But then, I know that movie cars do NOT lead a charmed life as my son owns the three red Camaros that were used in the second last episode of Stargate Atlantis and the studios are strictly into cosmetics rather than making a car into what it is supposed to represent. The cars are strictly tools to be used and then discarded. Ah, but then there were all of the background cars - especially at the drive in. Sadly, aside from a partial shot of one in the junkyard scene, there were no '59 Chevys ( my first love ) although there was a blue '60 Sport Coupe that looked pretty sweet. Then there was the '62 Impala hardtop at the end at the start of the race scene. Definitely a timeless classic.. The second one was not near as good as far as I am concerned.. I really didn't enjoy the part where Toad and Joe's chopper was shot down and Joe died. I liked his character and that bummed me out. Yeah.. the first one was definoitely a classic.. -
It was 1962 or 1963 and my first model was a Christmas present from a girl who I was in grade three or four - it was one of those things where lids draw names from a hat or a bowl and that is who you have to buy a present for. I have no idea who the girl was any more - didn't really matter because I didn't like the model - a yellow Stutz Bearcat. My second model was more my style - my parents bought iot for me the following summer - a '63 or '64 Cadillac convertible. I wish I still had that one.. Once I started to buy models, I remeber that one of my favorites was a '64 Comet convertible that I bought around 1965. I carefully painted it dark blue and painted the trim with Testor's silver paint. It actually looked pretty decent as I recall. I REALLY wish that I still had that one.

You could replicate the Merc that "The Pharohs" drove in the movie American Grafitti"... then do the bad boy '55 Chevy that was driven by Harrison Ford - and then the '58 Impala which was the star of the show - and you'd have an awesome threesome! Just a suggestion... -
Whos gonna build one like this?

I can assure you that sarcasim or criticism is the last thing on my mind - I wrote what I feel in my heart - I for one am grateful to have a site like this and to have met the people that I have met here.. if it pout a smile on your face then I guess that isn't a terrible thing either - is it? Let's appreciate what we have - try to improve what we don't like and just be thankful is all I am saying. I mean no ill will to anyone. -
As a model guy who lives in an area where my kind are few and far between, I really want to say thank you to everyone on this forum for contributing and participating. I think that we can take things like having a website like this and the people - ALL of the people who make it up, for granted and just assume that this is just how things are. Maybe I am just rambling here but I truly want to express my gratitude and appreciation to those who share their self taught and learned building techniques and their knowledge with those less experienced and learned. George53, Brian and the others who have stepped out and helped and advissed and encouraged me personallyt - thank you one and all. And to the people who moderate and maintain the site and law and order here - thank you for a job well done - even when we may not personally agree with some new rule. You are the people who have built and make this machine and we, the members, are the fuel that make it all function and run. It's just nice to have someplace like this to come to where there is selflessness and encouragement and a real shortage of something that is far too prevalent in today's society - condemnation and ridicule. Someone started a thread awhile ago and suggested that perhaps some are too free with praise regarding the efforts and attempts of others. In my ever to be humble opinion, all that matters is that the person tried their best and for that, he/she deserves priase and encouragement and there is LOTS of that here! There are also those who tell it like it is - straight up and honest - and I appreciate that a lot. So thanks for reading my babble and build in health and prosper. Gary

Is this worth having cast?
impcon replied to Custom Mike's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I am not a '57 Chevy builder but yes, I'd sure look at a plain hood for a race car or custom if I wanted to buy one. I don't think that polls like this are regarded seriously enough - many guys figure that because they are not into a particular marque that they shouldn't respond to a poll. In fact, as modelers, I think we all should and we should support new products because it wont be just the guys on this forum who will buy the stuff - how many people buy resin stuff off Ebay who have never been to this site or any forum in general? But supporting new ideas will cause the casters to make a trial run and see how things go and the more items that they can cast and sell, then the more stuff will be available and hopefully, the prices will be held in check somewhat simply because they are selling more goods. It ain't just about you and I and what we like guys - it is about the hobby in general. AT least that is my opinion. -
A tribute to a great modeler and his wife
impcon replied to Railfreak78's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This is really nice to see and even nicer to read!!!!!! Thank you for sharing this treasure trove! There are those out there gnashing their teeth and tearing their hair out when they see stuff like this but I look at it this way -- obviously, here was a man who was blessed with a wife who shared his interests and the collection will be kept as such - a collection. One day, all that stuff will be for sale and when it is, there will be that much less of it available and many of those sealed and built models will be even more precious than they are today to say nothing of harder to find. Personally, when I look at a colection like that, I do not feel any jealousy, envy or disappointment that I can not have any of it. For the mnan who obviously spent years collecting, his appreciation for model cars went way beyond just hoarding - everything is neat and tidy and well displayed which tells me that he really appreciated and liked the stuff and he enjoyeded just having it. Somehow, although he was obviously passionate about the hobby, I don't think that he collected models and viewed them as an "investment". Ask yourself this - how many of those models were probably bought on clearance sales and would not exist today had he not bought and preserved them? Many if not most, were probably mundane, common and discontinued kits that would have been bought and now be long since gone into a dumpster. One day, as said, these will all find theoir way into the hands of guys like us who appreciate and love model cars and most will in due time be built and displayed. Just my opinion and I know there are those whoo disagree - but t's just an opinion. Thank you and thank the lady for allowing us to see the collection. I wish that my stuff was as neatly stored and displayed.. maybe I have some motivation now to try to get organized. One last thought - it's refreshing to see that this man's wife is not like so many others who would "clear out all that junk" because she obviously has an interest in her husband's hobby and his life. How many wives would be selling the collection off - not because they need the money but because they resented the time that he devoted to his simple hobby? She's a princess - no doubt about it in my mind! -
What haven't the Chinese decimated? I'll buy North American made products any day over Chinese imported copies. Hopefully, someone will start to make door handles here because I am sure thatthere will be a market for them. I have carved the molded on door handles out in the past and it's an improvement but I prefer the glue on ones. Trouble is, buying a model ( like the Chevelle wagon or a '59 Impala ) for just the door handles REALLY drives the cost of building a kit up, to say the least. Even buying parts kits off Ebay for $5.00 adds up when you figure the shipping costs into the deal.. it can still cost in excess of $15.00 for an incomplete kit just for the door handles. I really wonder why none of the resin casters have clued into this product possibility? They are making just about everything else... I mean, hellllooooo???????????? *nudge, nudge, wink, wink*

That's cute! I am especially releived that the model wasn't harmed or hurt. SAVE THE MODELS!!!!!! SAVE THE MODELS!!!!!!!

Longevity of the hobby - what do you think?
impcon replied to impcon's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hmmmmmmm.. Interesting post indeed and I'd regard it as more of a well voiced opinion than a rant. But consider this.. I collect and I guess that you could say that yes, I do hoard as well. There is a similarity here between real cars and models - it is the people who collect and yes, hoard ( I despise the word but oh well ) that make it possible for us to today be stilll able to buy old built and unbuilt annuals and kits that otherwise would no longer exist. In the world of real 1:1 automobiles, many of the "barn finds" that surface and go into the hands of people who will do something with them are cars and trucks that were never for sale and could be classed as hoarded. I am grateful for the "hoarders" because guess what? No one lives forever and peoples' lives change so sooner or later, 99.9% of the kits and models that belong to people who hide them away in their basements and closets will be on the market for the rest of us. Only a very small minority of those kits will go into a dumpster.. so it isn't all negative or bad. As for someone enjoying an unbuilt kit stilll in the box, I reckon there are those of us who can appreciate a pristine, unbuilt model in the box just as much as one that is done up by a very talenmted person and is sitting in a display case. There is something special about that unbuilt Nash Metropolitan still sitting in it's original box. beauty is in the eye of the beholder - and I do not judge anyone for what they wish to do with their proerty - be it build it or leave it virgin and in the box. Just my opinion.. -
When I see what some people actually pay for these "pro built" models, I cringe. No disrespect meant to anyone out there, but paying in excess of anything over $20.00 for a builtup that all you can see are pictures - and crappy, small pictures at that, is nothing short of a gamble. I have paid as much as $40.00 for a model but not because some guy or gal who knows squat about models says that it is "professionally built", but because it is an old annual that I really take a shine to or have wanted for a long time. I recently purchased a '60 Mercury convertible that when I took it out of the box - I was amazed at how good it looked! It's not contest quality but it'll look just fine sitting on the shelf just as it is although I plan to do a number on it - total strip down and refinish in a colour of my choice. My point is that there are sellers who would call this model "pro built" just like to some sellers, any old kit - or kit that they even think may be old - is now a "promo". "Promo" is the new buzzword amoing the ignorant and the deceptive and shady. Many auctions use the term kit and promo in the item title.. go figure. I'm still trying to figure that one out. Either it is a kit or it is a promo.. it can't be both - just like you can't be "a little bit pregnant". Either it is one or the other. I agree that there are VERY few sellers who sell their models who are even close to "pro's". Most are average I would say.. but there are those who fall for the line. I often wonder how many of the buyers are disappointed when they take their purchase out of the box. I guess that it's called "marketing".. being as how there is no real concrete, carved in stone, definition of just what a "pro" is, it's as harry said - "buyer beware". Just my opinion.....
