  1. No ideas on the blackened aluminum, but I can help on the wood weathering. A model RR scenery guru I know clued me in to a 'stupid easy' method: waterbased India ink thinned with isopropyl alcohol. A brief soak in the solution, followed by drying on paper towels overnight(or half the day if it's sunny) yields a nice gray 'neglected' finish: I added some knots and nails with a Pigma 005 artists' pen, and drilled out a few bigger knotholes. I use a rectangular Tupperware container for the soaking, and an old pickle jar to store it for reuse(and prevent loss by evaporation).
  2. Wow on both counts....love the color combo and stance on the Olds, and Ed's parts look excellent like everything else he offers. I'm looking forward to seeing this one finished in NJ this coming April.
  3. I too can attest to the quality of Jacen's Mopar steelies; I got a set from him recently, and they are among the nicest resin wheels I've ever seen....that fifth wheel was a very nice touch as well.
  4. I concur.....nailed it shut. Me likey!
  5. As a Charger is a unibody-constructed vehicle, that would be a real magic trick
  6. I like where this project is headed so far, and I must agree with the others who suggested cycle wheels up front; I'd run piecrust slicks in the rear myself, as opposed to huge tires. I once decided that was the way to go as well
  7. Another option is the 'Road Rats' 1/24th-scale diecasts by Jada, which are still pretty easy to score....my friend Matt used these on his rendition of CheZoom, and I have a set put aside for my Flinstone-bodied Hudson sled:
  8. For another steering gear option, here's a look at a Schroeder unit in a '32 Ford roadster at the most recent 'winter garage party' at Rolling Bones Hot Rod Shop here in NY: And a little peek at the 'teardrop' shape added to the cowl where the arm extends out of it: Early Years Resins offers a Schroeder-style steering gearbox, and Ron is working on a combo kit with a very nice pitman arm, based on this Revell part:
  9. Took the words right outta my mouse, Skip
  10. Irene gave us a real rough way to go last September, and word is Sandy might not be much easier on us....battened down the hatches and charged up my son's portable DVD player, now it's time to keep our fingers crossed.

    mk1 golf

"I'm VW Dave, and I approve this thread." Seriously, I love it! It really looks the business, and I'm sure the new owner is very proud to have it. Was this a replica of a real Mk1, or just a special order?
  12. Got mine today, and I can't say enough about how nice they are. Thanks for all of your hard work, Joseph!!!
  13. Got my resin BFGs from Chief Joseph today.......doing the happy dance ever since, because they are super nice!!
  14. I agree. While I'm not happy about the recent 'final value fee' taken out of the postage, I know that the minor costs associated with Ebay are offset by the much broader audience, and I'll keep using it.
  15. The chop actually came out better than the one I did on my Revell 'three winder.' I've decided to do mine in semigloss black and it will get salt or dry lakes dust added to it as 'camouflage.' Even with your own harsh self-critique, Drew, I really like it....and that Olds motor looks the business!
  16. Tamiya 18mm tape, Tamiya paint, and no clear until after I applied the decals...big shocker - Tamiya clear too
  17. Took the words right outta my mouse, Joseph. That tape is great stuff, and I recommend it above all others, but it's quite delicate.
  18. Looking good! I love the idea of a 'vintage build,' rather than using a newer hi-tech kit and simply adopting the style. Alan - Pretty sure I have a 'pre-owned' Duvall windscreen frame from an AMT 'Phantom Vicky' that needs new glass(easily cut from acetate, which I can also supply). Email me: plasticman1432@gmail.com
  19. I'm totally taken by this thread, especially by the ton of added details....turning that very poor resin kit into a highly detailed model is nothing short of amazing!
  20. Maybe your Michaels store has a bad selection....I snagged 3 or 4 different colors when I went looking. I've only used it once so far, but I can see it replacing flocking for good - I really like the 'no shedding' part. I used flat black spray enamel to secure my black embossing powder, and I'm quite pleased with the results
  21. www.thepartsbox.com also has a great selection of speakers, as well as amps and other needful bits
  22. I'm not known for building police car models, but I will need at least one of those new Mustang kits for that purpose. I always loved how they did the wheels on our NYS trooper Stangs
  23. I smell a rat. Like others have said above, it's well done and I like it....but it's a rat rod.
  24. Congrats indeed! I must admit I'm jealous, however....one of mine won 'best paint' at our local HobbyTown's fall contest last weekend, but the award wasn't nearly as impressive.
  25. I agree, try a dehydrator first, then strip and re-do it....either way, avoid using the dollar store paint on any future model projects
