Cutting a Hood for intake clearance
Foxer replied to Chuck Most's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
This is SO simple and crammed with common sense! BRILLIANT! -
All the trouble making hinges for my 85 GMC Van must have paid off. Here's the A100 door hinges with new brass pins and the hinges glued in place. I think I'll use the thin common pins I have for the final pins to get the finished look on top that will hold the pin in place and a touch of epoxy on the bottom. I'll take whatever the door gaps I get with a "grain of shop truck".

I just realized I can't edit the Title to indicate an update and the 2nd line of old is gone also. How unfortunate. Just a small one as I keep adding things to do ... I HAVE to stop this! I kept looking at the front vents above the DODGE logo and decided they had to open. Drilled a series of small holes and will cut and sand these opening to shape. I wanted to open and hinge the engine cover but since it's tight the the rear wall of the cab there was no room to swing it open. So it will just be liftoff and added some edges to key the cover on with some .01" strips. I also added some more parts to the body and decided to cut the door and rear gate hinge pins and replace with some brass rod for strength. The front grill (and bumpers) have been stripped of chrome as this will be a cheap shop mule. Both will be painted in cream.

When I mentioned building most of my 1:1 cars I should have mentioned I was fortunate most were available and only needed some body work or such. As you see ... 5 Porsche 924/944's, 3 VW Beetles, 2 Subaru Legacy wagons, an Infiniti G35 Coupe, 51 Plymouth, Triumph TR4A, 67 Pontiac Tempest, 59 Chevy Impala, 92 Crown Victoria, 56 VW Kombi, 85 GMC Van. The one I see never able to do is a 145 Volvo wagon. That's a pretty good hit list!

That is HOT! ,, spectacular job!

Now I'm going to have to kick the dog out of his house for somewhere to store my Styrene Junkie issues!

No it's not ... most of the cars I .. and my wife ... owned are on the shelf or down in the body shop! What ELSE are we supposed to build?! .. oh yeah . my Dad's cars are there too.

Nice job getting the halo out! -
It looks like you're more forward thinking than you bro.

one word, Nick ... Spectacular! I really like the unusual nature of this one.
-
yow! .. I can smell the masking on that from here! It looks awesome though..

a cool looking one. I like the extended rear wheel opening ... also the whole chrome tree rechromed!

That's one great looking truck and all the details! An interesting plow on a pickup ... not sure I've seen any around here pushing to both sides. Does the 1:1 align to push to one side? I expect it would have got some use today in Maine ... had 18" down in the Berkshires and all the plows got their first run for the winter. -
I have to feel sorry for cleanliness addicts who must spent hours keeping everything neat on their workbench, sweeping debris up and putting everything back in the slot engineered just for that tool! I was born with a "piles" mentality. There's a pile of tools ... knives, files, tweezers, etc. ... to the right of the cutting mat. Also a pile of sandpaper bits, a pile of cut pieces of rod and styrene bits, a pile of parts that are drying, a pile of parts that are glued and clamped, a pile of parts that are waiting to be installed, a pile of parts that need cleanup and sanding, piles and piles and piles. Thing is, I know whats in each piles. This was how I sorted everything on my desk at work, some piles of paper being a foot high! But ... I knew where everything is. Same goes for my computer desk here and the bench out in the garage. Just ask me for something, anything ... it will only take 5 seconds!

This build reads just like a 1:1 coming together in someone's garage back in the time frame you're doing. I'm loving watching this!

Dodge A100 van
Foxer replied to Lownslow's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
That looks good ... wheels are giving a nice stance. I'm assuming the Little Red Wagon is supplying the running gear and chassis? Since I've just started an A-100 (pickup!) this got me like a deer in your headlights. -
I know, I know ... what am I doing starting another build when I have 20 sitting in the shop undone. My excuse IS, this is a quick box stock build to get my juices flowing. Of course, It's not another Little Red Wagon but a well used shop truck .. some weathering and probably a new blue paint job at some point in it's life. I have some Auto-Air acrylic Caribbean Blue coming that I want to try out. This is my first time on the Little Red Wagon and it's been interesting cleaning it up and figuring out how all works. The door hinges look like they'll work, but I'm debating replacing the plastic pin with a brass one drilled into the plastic hinge. It might be a bit more rugged. The door hinges, tail light buckets and rear bulkhead have been fitted to the body and glued. It's sure been some work cleaning this up .. most is ready for some paint! I also plan to cut the engine cover and hinge the top so the engine is more visible. Just the stock engine is going in. The bottom side of the seats had to be filled as they'll be visible with the cover open ... that's the ONLY real bodywork so far!

Definitely a modeling day here in the Berkshires. It looks like 18", but I haven't strolled out with the yardstick yet ... no need for calipers out there! The poor kids Trick-or-Treating tomorrow night .. get out and shovel everyone!

My mother said I couldn't watch ANY more of your builds after she strolled by and caught THIS one on the screen. My mother is 92.
-
I'm assuming you use some kind of heat to shape that seat back. Could you explain your technique more? It looks like you have curves going in two directions!
-
Beautiful job finishing that .. the body metal/weathering looks real!

I was going to say something along the same lines. Since many of my more recent projects have been cars I've owned I've spent a lot of time looking at standard automotive paint. As said, there are MANY variations on blue metallic ... probably 12 new shades every year! Just watch the cars on the street and when one strikes you , get some of THAT paint! There are a few places that even will custom mix small quantities of paint for models. Scalefinishes Paint Scratch MCW
