  3. Ummm, yes, popular usage does make it correct usage over time. That's why the Oxford English Dictionary adds words like "selfies" to their lexicon. We've seen plenty of nouns become verbs, such as "Let me Google that." Times and usage change, and there's plenty of nonstandard verbiage that occurs within differing industries, which is specific to what they do.
  4. I've seen a number of objections on this forum to the use of the word, "build" in reference to a completed kit ("Great build," etc). Yet in the past two weeks I've seen it used regarding 1:1 cars: In terms of restoration, "This is going to be a tough build" (FantomWorks on Velocity) and Mecum Auctions on a terrific custom -- "That is a beautiful build." What's wrong with that word?

It was the basis for the Hudson Miniatures Old Timers kit. I think it opens up the question of what's original and what's authentic.   9. I'd say it's already a winner if only the chassis was displayed. By the way, you may find better detail than I supplied for a radiator emblem at this link; it also shows a Bearcat with tufted/pleated pattern on the seat bottom only, not even on the side bolsters. http://www.cartype.com/pages/1682/stutz I don't know that all wooden-spoke Stutz cars had pinstriping on the wheels, and based on the car photos on this link, you don't even have to pinstripe the hood or fenders!
  10. I was just looking at Paul Russell's article on his restoration of the car for Lauren, and he mentions that the wire wheels were de-chromed, respoked, trued and painted black. So it surprises me to have seen them in shiny chrome again, especially since the car has almost always been displayed by Lauren with the disc wheel covers (saves all that work of cleaning the wires, you know -- popular among chauffeurs of other cars back then). This picture was taken in Russell's shop at the beginning of the restoration.
  11. Well, the Lauren car is the original Pope car, which has been repainted and refitted multiple times in its history. I think the way this works, especially with this car, is that each subsequent owner can re-do it to his own desire. Therefore, I don't see any reason why a current owner can't re-do it to his own want. I think this goes for any classic car.

I know there are only a few of us who care about this, but did anyone notice in the Winter Olympics coverage, regarding the Ralph Lauren commercials, that the images of his black Bugatti Atlantic showed the car for the first time with chrome wire wheels and not the black dish wheel covers? Stunning.

  16. I wish there were a decent large-scale kit of this in 1/16 or 1/12, The Revell 1/12 based on the Renwal should bring shame on them forever.
  17. That's the best close-up I could find of a Bearcat wheel, but I'm slightly puzzled by the Mercer-style sculpting of the spokes, which is not common to Bearcats and is more like Mercers.
  18. Question: Many of our members curse the weather conditions in their areas – heat, cold, humidity, etc - and say it makes it very difficult to do paint work. Yet you live in the Chicago area with some of the most extreme weather conditions in the country, but you keep on chuggin' along, all year long, doing beautiful work. Do you have a secret?

  23. Love the fender skirts. Here's one with windovers coachwork, and youll find a few 540Ks with that approach. Usually, they have a MB star logo at the hubcap position.
