An oldie but a goodie. I really enjoy seeing models of unusual vintage vehicles. Well done.

I am really attracted to the style, look and mechanics of the cars that participate in events like The Race of Champions and The Hot Rod Hill Climb. These cars represent the basics of the earliest days of hot rodding. There has been a lot in the media lately and I developed an uncontrollable urge to build a couple models of such cars. 1925 Model T Roadster BODY – AMT Double T kit INTERIOR – Bucket sears from kit with seatbelts. Added inner door detail and s hifters for auxiliary transmission and rear-end FRAME & SUSPENSION – Stock frame with suspension from AMT ’27 T Phaeton slightly lowered WHEELS & TIRES – The big wire wheels are from the AMT ’27 T Phaeton. I also tried the the smaller diameter whitewalls and wheels from the AMT ’34 Ford 5-W Coupe. ENGINE – Frontenac DOHC head and exhaust from AMT ’27 T Phaeton. Added two downdraft carburetors [Frontenac heads were developed and sold by the Chevrolet brothers after giving up their naming rights to GM. These heads were chain driven dual overhead 16 valve and could produce up to 100HP. Frontenac equipped engines competed in the Indy 500] RUNNING GEAR – Following a popular Model T performance enhancing technique, I added a 3-speed transmission to the Model-T transmission and 2-speed rearend which would give 12-speeds forward and 6-sppeds in reverse !! PAINT – Tamiya Racing White and Satin Black 1929 Model A Roadster BODY – The back half is an AMT ’29 Roadster and from the doors forward is Revell ’29 Pickup. [This gave me opening doors, fully articulated hood and an accurate running gear although I must say the hinges and pins are fragile and fiddly] I trimmed the fenders to leave the side aprons as guys did back in the day otherwise the entire body would have to be removed. I also corrected the three ribs in the rear wheelwells. INTERIOR –The seats from Revell ’31 Coupe with a bottom cushion and seatbelts added. The rear bulkhead was made from the old AMT Ala Kart body that came in the ’29 roadster kit. Filled in open areas of floor and added inner door panels FRAME & SUSPENSION –Revell stock frame with many components dechromed– dropped front axle and additional lowering front and rear – brake shoes added [I am really impressed with the accurate and workable steering gear on the ’29 RPU & ’31 Sedan kits] WHEELS & TIRES – The wheels are from the Lindberg ’34 Pick-up with two sizes of Firestones from the parts box ENGINE – The Riley head is from the Revell ’30 Sedan [Riley heads had two overhead intake valves per cylinder and retained the exhaust valves in the block. Fully tuned engines so equipped could produce 125HP] PAINT – Metallizer Burnt Iron over Tamiya Satin Black

1929 Model A Roadster ArtDeco/Coachbuilt/Streamliner -DONE!
Phildaupho replied to Impalow's topic in WIP: Model Cars
All the superlatives have already been be used. I am overwhelmed. Maybe the most inventive and well crafted model car I have ever seen. -
You did a fantastic job with the IMC kit. It is too bad many of the great kits they produced were in a scale smaller than standard.

1929 Model A Roadster ArtDeco/Coachbuilt/Streamliner -DONE!

Of recently models that deserves to be in the Model Car Museum someday, this is certainly one of them. It is also a design that I could imagine a very wealthy person wanting to have a full size replica built. -
Congrats on another fantastic Cobra model. I really admire how you have been able to stay focused on building this one type of car. I have tried but keep getting distracted.

Thank you everyone for your comments which have made this project all the more gratifying. For George I am adding a few more photos. The engine was such an integral aspect of making this project possible.

This model is a replica of Dan Gurney’s 1966 Lola T-70 MKII Spyder which he raced to Ford’s only victory in the Can-Am series. The construction of this model is completely documented On The Workbench http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/115922-lola-t70-mk2-124-scale-under-glass/ But to summarize it started life as a Tamiya slot-car body and now sits on a much modified Fujimi GT-40 chassis with an MPC Eagle Indy engine block, transaxle and rear suspension. Thanks for the Gurney-Weslake heads go to Steve Roullier who did the masters and Stephen Miller who did the casting. Items no longer available from the original sources are the Mini-Exotic white-metal wheels and Fred Cady decals. The paint is a custom mix of Testor’s Arctic Blue Metallic enamel and Metallic Black. This has been my most involved and documented model car project to date. It has also taken the longest but I have really enjoyed the process including all the research and the challenge of attempting to replicate as many details as possible. For all the photos of this model - http://public.fotki.com/phildaupho/dan-gurney-scale-ra/1966-lola-t70/

40 Ford Coupes are such gorgeous cars and your model is especially so. I really like the look of the dull Halibrands with the wide whites.

Larry's '62 Renault 1093 (a factory hot rod) in his words
Phildaupho replied to traditional's topic in Model Cars
This is a very impressive model of an unusual subject. I always took notice of Dauphines as their name is so close to mine. My family never had a Renault but did have Peugeots in which I had a number of adventures during my early driving years. -
1965 Mercury Comet Cyclone (update 1/4/19) Finished!
Phildaupho replied to RancheroSteve's topic in WIP: Model Cars
You are really going all out on this one. Doing the modifications has always been my favorite aspect of model car building also the most challenging, interesting and at times rewarding. -
This is a good looking, well thought out and constructed hot rod.

This is a very interesting project. I cannot say I remember the real car but was always a fan of Lloyd Ruby Who I had the pleasure of meeting

When it is completed, having a model of your old racecar will make it all worthwhile plus you are going to have a lot of fun along the way. You have certainly made a good start. -

WOW This is a fantasticly beautiful transformation -
Thank you everyone for your comments and encouragement. This should be my final post for the Lola On The Workbench. I know I keep working and do the final painting, assembly and decaling of the body but have found myself making excuses and I even broke my New Year’s resolution by starting a new project before completing all my unfinished projects.
-
Essentially everything expect for the outer body is now completed, although I can see in the digital photos there are a few things that need tweaking.
-
Very well styled. One of the most attractively incorporated continental kits I have seen. Sleekly swept back.
-
Great to see this very interesting project back on the workbench and I am sure the results will be worth waiting for.
-
Gorgeous model of a beautiful car excellently photographed.

I scanned down past what I thought were photos of a real car before I realised I was looking at a model. Outstanding build of one of the more unusually styled cars of the early sixties.
