Looking for bright colored detail wire
Jairus replied to Evil Appetite's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Since you have already been to Radio Shack.... go back - as they also sell spools of white too! The diameter is perfect for ignition wire and like Harry suggested... you can color it with a felt tip pen. Even fluorescent colors and how cool is that!!! -
Model Master Airbrush thinner will clean off just about any paint, even lacquer, without harming the plastic surface. I usually take a Q-tip and dip it into the thinner, then very carefully stroke the surface a little bit at a time. Don't scrub too hard as it will leave tiny scratches. Afterwards you will want to polish the surface and then wax it to keep it shiny.

OK Guys lets come to some sort of agreement.
Jairus replied to george 53's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The software on which this forum is based has the ability to create a section that can hidden, sort of. In other words..... most of us use the "View New Posts" to see what is hot regarding topics and threads currently active. Am I right? But that can be disabled on any specific section! That way an off-topic, political or whatever (yes, yes I know you think political is verboten but trust me, it is just under the surface for most of you guys) discussion cannot be seen unless the reader goes directly to that section of the forum and clicks on the thread! Those with Delicate sensibilities won't be offended when they click on the View New Posts link and those who want an off topic section to discuss Tires, minibikes and the like can get it out of their system. The only way any one can see what is going on in the Rants & Raves section (or what ever section is choosen) is by clicking directly into that section. Harry and Gregg, the simplest method, if this is your course of action is to change the Rants and Raves section parameters by unclicking the New Post Update option. I am not advocating this course of action as I have no dog in the fight and care not either way. When I was a mod here I suggested this a long time ago and received no response. But since this problem keeps rearing its head I believe the only course of action is to create a new "OFF TOPIC" section. ***Warning*** Personal opinion: Incidentally... I feel the "Is it a model or real" thread is actually off topic but... I never said a thing about it either way. I have also never taken part in that game. I also feel the discussions about music, a new car you just purchased, pictures of your kids and discussions about your health.... do not belong in this forum! Therefore I never take part in the discussion of any of these subjects. However, I believe that this forum belongs to the readers and members of MCM forums. With-out members, you have nothing! We are the forum! All of us, poor spellers included, make up the forum! So because of this and the fact that we are friends, a little leeway regarding off-topic discussion should be allowed, even with-in a thread. How far off topic... should be determined by the author of the thread. Not the moderator!!! It's not his job to keep all threads on-topic. It is the author or the guy who started the thread job to police his own thread. All he has to do is hit that "report" button and a mod will pop up with a PM and ask what is the problem like a perky stew asking "Coffee or Tea?" So... with this in mind I don't think a vote is required. We just need Gregg or Harry to make the right decision and then WE ALL abide by that rule. Rant mode off, have a nice day! -
Yes, very nice indeed! Is that a Buick Rivera grill I see there? Well done Finland and welcome to MCM forum.

Ford flat-head of course!

Inappropriate forum behavior
Jairus replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Soooo, I gotta ask, if I am sitting here blogging in a tutu and high heels... is that considered inappropriate forum behavior? -
1956 Revell Ford Country Squire
Jairus replied to bigskybob's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Good question to ask the executives at Revell who made the decisions then. BECAUSE THEY SCREWED UP! What was provided then was a sheet of acetate and some crappy patterns. You were required to cut to shape the front and back windows and BEND them into position... while the glue dried. I figure many a kid either ended up throwing the model across the room (Art?) or did what I did and make a mold for vacuum-forming a set of glass. (The sides glass is easy and flat.) Or do what Bob did and build it without the hassle. -

Hey Bob... what are you trying to pull? There is no female figure in that kit! Just the kid and the Cowpuncher... -
1956 Revell Ford Country Squire
Jairus replied to bigskybob's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have one of those too. I also built a replica using the Rancharo kit as a starting point. A lot of work that one.... but the current price is right at about $200.00 to $300.00 for an unbuilt kit depending on how much the buyer wants it. At that price the buyer is little concerned with the difficulty of a multipiece body! More than likely the high ticket price is simply because the kit is sooooo freaking rare! This is because it will never be re-released due to the molds being irrevocable changed, never to be restored to "Country Squire" status again. I know this because I bugged Ed Sexton (Former Revell product manager) and the current man in charge Roger Harney many times regarding this very subject. We are more likely to have a brand new mold made of that car before the old molds are returned to mint condition... and the chances of a new mold of a 50's station wagon are about 100,000 to 1! I would keep it myself... because that is what I am doing... hahahahah BTW here is my boxed example with the very dust covered build-up I constructed from the Rancharo with a few resin pieces cast off the original kit. -
Well, I'm liking the shirt dude!

What car Is This?
Jairus replied to Smart-Resins's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
1964 Dodge. Like the one in the song "Little O'l lady from Pasadena" by Jan & Dean. Polar Lights did a new snap kit of that one a few years ago by the way. Might be able to find one of those kits and see if the bumper will fit... Edit: after some research it was a 1965 Dodge that Polar Lights produced. Completely different grill. As those below me so ably stated.... the correct kit is a Lindberg Dodge 330 released in 1997. Oh well... you can't be right all the time. -
Cool Hot Rod seen on Ebay
Jairus replied to Modelmartin's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Dave, I agree with most of what you wrote, however I have never seen a "U" joint break on the street. Strip yes... but on the street? As for the style... I believe it is a "Nostalgia" rod, which is built in the spirit of the era. Frankly I think the wheels are fine for 90% of what this rod will be doing... cruising! If you want a well riding machine then buy a Toyota. This is a cruising "LOOK AT ME" rod and I personally like it. Sure... a set of cutout's and mufflers might be a good idea (or a roll of chicken wire stuffed up the tube) in order to not go deaf. Ah well, it's all for the fun anyway, not suppose to be a commuter. -
It's Harry!

I joined SABA in about 1983 or 1984. I think they had been around for a year or more before that, with our meetings held at Bob Paeth's house. I remember we used to display our current projects on Bob's pool table in the basement. Fun times! Wish I could be more spicific but I think I am the oldest current member with a computer. Ron and Bob Robinson, the other older members, don't do the Internet ! Dave Susan, James Warkentin and Fletch came along later. But if I had to guess.... 1982 would be the first year for SABA with the oldest members being Bob Paeth, Ron Martinolich, Bob Robinson and Chuck Carter. What is that... 27 years?

Another Recycled Model. 1960 Edsel Cconvertible.
Jairus replied to Ron Hamilton's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Well... not a 60, but this is my recycled Edsel, a '59, that I stripped and rebuilt just like you are Ron. Might be an inspiration.... -
Yeah.... chris is a great builder but he spends a ton of time on the paint. More than the average modeler on this forum I can tell you! Very nice Lotus and great save. I have a couple of bodies like that waiting for attention... someday.
-
Did you build the chassis too? Two things... maybe three. I love the car and the paint. Beautiful! If you built the chassis, your soldering is pretty good in MHO. Second, you need to put your name in the signature block. Go to the My Controls section at the top and put your name in the signature block. Nobody gets away on this forum hiding behind a handle. Third, you really need an interior. Do you have one? Even a sheet of styrene plastic with a Cox or Monogram head and shoulders would be better... but you gotta have something viewable through the windows. I have a mold for vacuum-forming an interior plate with some details and driver shoulders. It just requires a head and helmet.... plus roll bar added from a donor kit. Easy stuff for a modeler. Right? PM me if you want it....

For those that were wondering....

Trolled on this forum? All you need to do is report them to the moderators. Deleting your thread does nothing, you need to file a report or they will be back. Jairus -
Congrats on 10 years, Gregg!
Jairus replied to Dave Darby's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Bob, that is just too cool! Provided your original photo is digital, full resolution and in color... I think you should submit it to Gregg for a cover. Really! Gregg... you going to let me do another one of those someday? Jairus -
Wow... Yeah, I'd say PRETTY COOL is about right! Great little bug, nice stance, thanks for posting.

GOT MY MCM OCTOBER #144 TODAY!
Jairus replied to RodBurNeR's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That would put Gregg at about 86 or so.... wow! -
1928 Ford "rat rod" (but more like a work in progress...)
Jairus replied to kerc's topic in Model Cars
Jose, now that is COOL! Back before the war those were called "Gow jobs". Some even had the frame lowered over the spring perches. But many looked just like what you have there... very nice and thanks for posting! -
I suppose like the Firebird looks compared to the Camaro. Never done any illustrations to that effect but I bet it would be fun for a future SketchPad. Neat idea!

fender flares 57 chevy nomad
Jairus replied to One_Track_Mind's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Brian fender flairs are, as others have said, constructed for the purpose of covering the tire to keep it legal. Some states require tires to be covered if wider tires are installed on a vehicle. Others, like Oregon for some strange reason, don’t seem to care. We have open wheel roadsters and huge 4x4’s with tires exposed throwing rooster-tails whenever it rains. Go figure. At any rate that is the reason fender flairs were even bothered with. Fender skirts on the other hand… are purely a matter of form rather than function. A stylistic thing from 1920’s coachbuilders who thought it looked more “streamlinedâ€. Drag racers in the 60’s and 70’s didn’t much care and would simply radius the opening right through the side trim. Which is why many of the Revell model kits came with an indent inside the rear fender well for easier cutting-out to make room if the “DRAG VERSION†of a 3-1 was chosen. Today the plan is to narrow the rear axle and tub the inner fenders thus keeping the exterior totally stock. What you have there Brian is a stylistic exercise in my humble opinion. The members of the forum are not quiet as much as they are shocked. Nobody removes all the details as you did unless it is to create a custom and you are well on your way to a neat custom if it is finished correctly. Or Drag racer as you stated in the beginning. Actually most Funny cars today are molded fiberglass shells that have the details painted on with an airbrush. So what you have there is a mix of two different trends, or: “A custom bodied funny!†Maybe you could help us see it better if you would post a pic with it mounted on the chassis showing where the rear wheels fit into openings?!?!
