I didn't say the track was in the U.K., I said the folks who capitalize on Jack The Ripper are in the U.K. I've played Forza Motor Sports I and II, I know where "The Ring" is, even if I never completed a clean lap on it! Regards, David G.

The Ring is quite probably the deadliest race course on the planet. Maybe this fact could be capitalized on the way folks in the U.K. capitalize on Jack The Ripper and other aspects of their history... Tourism. Tram tours could be taken around the course and all the famous crash sites could be pointed out to tourists as the names and markings on the track surface are translated and explained... "It was here, in 1963 that famed Italian driver (insert name here) lost control of his custom built Mazarati causing it to leave the course at an estimated 108 mph, costing him his life." Yeah, I know it's kind of grim, but it's perhaps the thing that has generated the most fame for this race course. And besides... Jack The Ripper? Regards, David G.

What's up with screen names?
David G. replied to oldscool's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
In addition to my own name, I have only two screen names that I use: daveag or Midloth. The first is obviously a contraction of my first name and last two initials. The second comes from a region in Scotland where my grandmother's clan, Harper, was said to have lived. When they were there, the whole area which includes Edinburgh and the surrounding areas, moslty to the south, was known as Lothian. It has since been divided into three regions East Lothian, West Lothian, and, you guessed it, Midlothian. I loved the sound of that name from the moment I heard it; I dropped the "-ian" and it's been my alter ego for more than thirty years. I've associated it mainly with the gaming sites to which I belong, so I don't use it here. I also don't feel a need for anonymity in this community. Regards, David G. -
I had one of these when I was about 9 yrs. old. It was way beyond my skill level at the time, and there was nobody to help me with it. Consequently, it never got it built. But I still loved the kit and have very fond memories of it. It's nice to see what it looks like completed. Great job! Thanks for posting the pics. David G.

Improving your modeling skills
David G. replied to spkgibson's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Maybe it's just your choice of words, but "calling people out" and "slamming" their work is just what we're talking about not doing. We (most of us any way) want to offer constructive criticism to help people improve their skills, not punish them for failure. For the most part, I no longer offer constructive criticism of any kind. There are some members of this community who are mature enough, or truly want enough to improve their skills. I will offer honest critiques of their work, otherwise, if I see a build posted with sloppy paint or wobbly wheels, I move on without comment, or try to find a good feature to comment on. But I've never made an attempt to "slam" anybody or "call them out" on anything. If I ever felt that such was warranted, I agree with you, a PM should be used. There's my input on our quarterly "Honest Critique vs Coddling Post" (no offense to OP ) Regards, David G. -
I don't mind at all when others post related pics on a thread that I start. If I'm building a '55 Chevy and there is someone else is building one too, feel free to post a picture. It's fun to see what someone else is doing with the same kit. If you have a tip on how I might improve on something I've done, and you can show me an example, post a pic. Most members of this community honestly want to see others improve their skills and have no wish to "one-up" a person who may have less experience or skill. I've learned more about model building from this community in the past year, than I have in any previous ten. I just see the pics as a part of the post.

'66 volkswagen(s) : karmann ghia and beetle
David G. replied to krishna.iskandana's topic in Model Cars
Can somebody please explain to me how an automobile can have a sexual orientation, or is this meant to be some sort of an insult? I think the cars look great! Both are clean, straight builds- good color choice, paint and detail. Regards, David G. -
So Cranky's interests encompass not only abandoned, broken-down, gunky and distressed machinery, but abandoned, broken-down, gunky and distressed humans as well! That's just too funny! Bring on the zombies!

From what I've seen so far, everything looks good. I would consider shooting a bit of Dull-Coat on the seats. They are a bit too shiney for my tastes. But aside from that, Aces!
-
Well, there ya go! That's very cool. What are the details? How'd you make it?

There's a technique I learned on this discussion board that I've used on my last couple of builds. File and sand away the back or inboard portion of the grille until only the grate portion is left. It's tedious and takes some patience. Toward the end, you have to work carefully as the plastic becomes very thin and delicate, but the results are worth it. I did this on my '55 Chevy. You'll notice that the electric cooling fans on the radiator can be seen through the grille. That's not a PE grille, it's plastic. Obviously, it won't work with every type of grille, but for the ones on which it will work, in my opinion, it's worth the effort. Hope this helps, David G.

Brian, that thing just scares the ba-jeebers outta me. Congrats on the honors you received for it, well earned indeed!

I haven't seen one of these in about thirty years! Nice work on this one!

1957 Ford Country Sedan 9 passengers and shasta Airflyte trailer
David G. replied to zelkam's topic in Model Cars
Excellent work! Everything about those two models just feels right. -
Zooom! Great color, excellent paint, clean build.
-
Excellent work on a great classic hot rod.

As if the excellent work on the truck wasn't enough... I can't wait to see how your diorama comes out! Also, your English is fine. Much better than my Deutsche, and better than some native English speakers I know. Regards, David G.
-
Maybe it's done and you just don't know it yet. How about putting it on cinder blocks and making it part of a diorama? What you've got done looks good enough to make it work.
-
Very cool! Now we know old Hippie millionaires drive!

Be nice Danno. *************** Other than that, I've got boxes of these... partial builds, tear-downs etc. I could just grab one and shoot some paint on it, glue a Barbie head to it and be done. It seems like a neat idea, but, to me, it also seems kind of vague. The one criterion that makes the 1:1 event a challenge is the $500.00 spending cap. It would be cool if there were a way to reflect a similar restriction in the CBP. Regards, David G.

Where, When and How Much? Nevermind "how much," where and when? I would only hope that my skills are worthy.

Everything looks great, your paint and interior detail are excellent. I have one question though: Is the lever on the right side of the steering column a gear selector? If it is, you may want to remove it if you plan on using a shifter on the console. Other than that, everything looks great! Regards, David G.

Clean and classy! Excellent work!

Amazing, as always! I'm gonna be watching this one.
