Salt Flat racer

Thanks for the LSR link! Love the pic of the Green Monster! I met Art and Dusty (daughter) at the Buck Tractor Pulls (Lancaster, PA) Years ago. I thanked him for his contribution to motorsports and told him I loved his Allison powered drag car with truck axles from the late 50s-early 60s - his eyes twinkled with childlike glee. I will remember it always. Brilliant Man. -

Andy's got some good advice - get a rulebook - I love rulebooks! Be careful what car the class you are building for if you want it to be prototypical. The ECTA has some rules posted on their website, also. I have a friend building a 1:1 '53 Stude for landspeed stuff. He was just telling me of all the things he has to change to lower his car an additional FOUR inches. So far it has done 170 or so at Maxton and over 180 at Loring, Maine's new site. His car pretty much uses a VERY well reinforced stock frame as they were insanely flimsy form the factory. He adapted late model Crown Vic and Stude parts for the front suspension. The rear susp. was the stock leaf springs, nine inch, with slapper bars. He is changing to a fabricated torque arm assy (like on the last two generations of F-body). I think rules for his class make you use the stock floor boards or replacements/substitutions in the stock location. The cage is a full cage with halo bar and a funny car type cage around the driver. It is rated to over 200mph. At anything over 175 - you have to have fire suppression, also. I hope this helps. The rule books are priceless. Some well written ones read like a novel! Sometimes I cry at the end. -
Thanks for the feedback everyone. This has a bunch of pop-ups trying to sell me downloadable software to clear it up. The selling website is very poorly done. The product has very poor reviews also. They pretty much hold a computer hostage until your buy their stuff - it removes the pop-ups - but the spywhare stays. I'm just gonna pay to have it fixed and then go and get a Mac mini.

I have to agree about the DVDs - they are great! It is one thing to see pics in a magazine or book - but to see someone actually DO the thing and describe what he is doing is irreplaceable! The Airbrush DVD is quite good! His technique is unique and his explanation very detailed and real world.

How to: Bare Sheetmetal Exposed!

Did you borrow some thumbs for that, Jairus? Or do you live too close to a Nuclear Power Plant? I goota say that the effect is quite convincing. Has anyone ever seen the bare metal features in The Rodder's Journal? They are really quite awesome. Some pics: These are OK but there has been some really great ones - like Harry Bentley Bradley's '48 Ford years ago. -

Flares give me goosebumps! I'd rather see flares than wings! http://s808.photobucket.com/albums/zz10/Seeker589/box%20flare%20porn/ I had posted a link to these on the Grassroots Motorsports forum months ago in a thread about Box Flares. Enjoy! -

Outstanding! Congratulations! Especially for getting it done early! I would like to add one thing - You never stop learning in life - EVER! So learn with purpose and set a goal. Be it trade schools, college or even just personal skills. Maybe the power plant has tuition assistance or reimbursement. A very valuable benefit. If I had used my employers tuition assistance from day one - I'd have a Bachelors by now. The more education you have the more choices you have as your life moves on down the highway. One more thing - never limit yourself. Don't let those around you limit you either. Congratulations, again! -
Anyone Know About Swedgelok Fittings?

These look very close: The link directly to the item: http://www.alliedelec.com/search/productdetail.aspx?SKU=5025262 I was thinking the same thing about those stacks - but I'm not heavy into building right now and they could get lost in my impending move. I'll have to try to remember them when I start building more heavily. -

Oh! - My Eyes!!! Make it STOP!!! Those skirts KILL me! I do like the FT-thingie. The wing has to go! There are quite a few GT-R styling cues - like the entire fender line with the flairs and gills and stuff. It is an appealing design, however. -

I can see the Grizzly bear fashion show now - Donn Yost is looking dashing in this years new fashion sensation - the Pork Chop Panties - Available at Victoria's Secret in the meat-britches section. Oh and what do we have here?! A very muscular and tall Grizzly bear chasing Donn down the catwalk wearing a Chicken Breast Bustier with matching thong. He's eying up Donn in those panties! Oh, Gawd! Now you guys have my imagination thinking of homosexual Grizzly bears in thongs! I need therapy! -
Show/Contest Judges - Touch Or No Touch?

WOW!!!!! Could someone please help me clean up these apples!!! I upset the Cart! One thing we all have is passion - we wouldn't be here if we didn't. This thread has brought that out. I am very sorry if any of my posts upset anyone. The things we create hold part of us in them - to be sure! To fully avoid any upset on either the Judges or the Entrants part is to display a model so it shows all the parts you want judged. Be it mirrors, stands, rotisserie or combination there-of. Not having even judges touch models is the only solution to the possibility of damage to a model. The Mirror Mr. Yost has his models displayed on in his You Tube videos and his website (which is quite inspirational) would be the perfect size - add some risers to one side or both and the viewer can view the car at all angles. then the judge can turn the mirror carefully or just move around the model as it sits on the table. I can see that overlarge displays - while very eye grabbing - can also take up too much room on the display tables. Governing this would be impossible - we have to be self policing. Mr. Karmodeler2 - I have never and will never smoke anything - EVER. That is something I'm passionate about. Also - intentionally destroying a model at a show is sick - I was implying the risks we all face in our daily lives - from getting up in the morning - driving to and from work and doing our daily tasks - they all involve risk. When we take models to shows - it involves risk to the models - that is all. I was not implying intentional damage. If I had 1500 hours in a model - I'd be really pissed if someone damaged it. I would have to remove myself from the area to calm down - I'm afraid that immediate interaction with the perp would get our of hand right quick. I do not condone at ANY time that a spectator should touch a model at a contest or show - EVER-EVER!!!!! I thank you all for your input and contributions to this thread. -

Cal - Is there a Future spray how-to on the board? I would really like to read it - it seems interesting. What ratio do you thin it and what do you thin it with? By-the-way - Really nice looking models! -

I must come out and say that I agree with Mark Gus-----n on this. Sorry. I don't agree with penalizing those that don't want their models touched by docking points for unseen areas, however. This would come back to how it is displayed. About the standard rules never happening due to too many Ideas on how contests should be run - I think this is a demonstration of the previously mentioned Testosterone. -
Show/Contest Judges - Touch Or No Touch?
seeker589 replied to seeker589's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
So what you are saying is "Those who trust the judges have an advantage over those who don't trust anyone but themselves." Risk can have great reward. Is it trust issues or separation anxiety that causes people to not wanna touch their stuff? Those that prefer not to have judges touch their models - do you loan any tools when a neighbor or fellow modeler needs something? -

Thanks for clearing up the whole arm breaking thing. Being mad at someone is a very valid emotion if they were to cause damage to a model you built. Causing someone painful harm in reaction to that damage is very unacceptable. How you deal with that anger is how character is measured. There is a satisfaction in not allowing disasters like the damage of a model bother you -the reward is being able to solve the problem and deal with the emotion without over-reacting. My wife has told me time and again - "You CHOOSE to be angry or not-angry." Mood and reactions are chosen. Any subject that involves emotion, like contact or damage done to a model, is a very touchy subject. Much like faith. -
Show/Contest Judges - Touch Or No Touch?

Thank Everyone for your input and very good discussion. Seeing every-bodies varied response - would a standard rule set be a good idea for all model contests? A rule set that would let everyone feel more secure that their entry on the table is being viewed and treated safely - regardless of having their models handled or not handled. Something like - Car classification - (Street Machine, Hot rod, curbside, truck, fire apps., etc.) judge's handling rules/ "Do not Handle" option Entry procedure - contest entry open and close time - grace period of late entries. Awards procedure Having separate Handling and No-handling classes would be silly - but splitting contests from neighboring host clubs and saying that one contest is a Handle contest - standard rules and having the other contest a Tabletop/no handle - standard rules may be a good answer. Those in that region could then choose if they wanted to enter either or both contests. We could call it the "Donn Yost Act" or the "Don't fondle my models manifesto". How about the "Tim Lantz standard or TLS."<<<< I like that one! How is judging at the GSLMCC done? -

Have you seen Donn Yost's finishes. www.OldManModels.com I recommend the Airbrush video - it really is outstanding! He SWEARS by Testor's High-Gloss Clear shot through an airbrush. And from the gloss and even-ness of his final finishes - I am very eager to try it. This is Donn's 1956 DelRay - check the reflection! I know this is the MCM message board - but check out his feature in the latest issue of SAE. The proof is in the puddin'. Right Donn? -

You make some very good points Ramcharger. So who pays for the show car that gets destroyed? Or the irreplaceable race car that gets totaled? Who wants to be responsible for the Le Mans winning Ferrari that gets damaged? The owner - period. There was an instance where a new road racer was learning to race his newly built Improved Touring B VW-GTI - he misjudged traction and his braking point and rear-ended a Honda Civic HARD! Ultimately - the responsibility was of the owners of their respective cars. Competition is dangerous and you can't have insurance coverage on the racetrack - if you can - how much would that cost?! Vintage racing has rules about incidents on track - one contact incident has something like a year banishment. The second is either lifetime banishment or some other stiff penalty. When entering a show (1:1 or scale/ NNL or judged contest) a model owner takes risk. The Crowd can get unruly or the judge can get careless. I just feel that in order to prove your model better than the next model - the scrutiny of the judge includes handling. I once had a model in Rod And Custom like in 1990. I had no idea that Pat Ganahl picked up my model and carried it to his photo area. Some friends of mine told me this and I didn't believe 'em - until the car showed up in a little B&W pic. I can not replace the thrill of seeing my car in a magazine - that never would have happened if there was a no touch rule. Quitting because something gets broken or doesn't go in the builder's favor does not reflect maturity. How much respect did we give the kid who got angry when he lost his baseball or soccer game? When a model gets damaged, a race car gets wrecked or a show car gets damaged - life doesn't end. Heartbreak is part of life - how we recover from that heartbreak shows the strength of our character. Withdrawing from competition or NNL shows out of fear lets the whole hobby lose out on what that builder has to contribute. Those who have quit - please give it another chance - how will I know if my model is better than a model that never got entered? -

I like the "Do not Handle" box idea. I must wonder how that effects the viewpoint of the judge. Some might have a problem judging fairly - but if you don't want your contest model judged by picking it up at a contest - it is your prerogative. -
Greetings fellow plastimaniacs! I just watched Donn Yost's Tips and Tricks DVD and learned some things, re-learned some things and got thinking about some things. At the end of the second DVD - Donn has some things to say about Show/Contest Judges touching and handling models. He REALLY doesn't like it! His solution is displaying models on mirrors or judging the model as it sits or the builder displaying/entering the model should be paged or located to "show" the hidden area. I can almost agree with him on the mirror aspect. The point I don't 100% agree with is the modeler getting to interact with the judge should he be contacted to "display" the underside. Judges should never be in contact with the modeler during the contest. I would go as far as to say contest entries should be anonymous until the awards - but that is another post. I have entered contests in the past and I am planning on entering contests some time in the future (especially with my new found Testor's enamel skills that Donn shared in his DVD ). I expect to have them handled with care by the judges who are also modelers and who know what goes into each and every carefully placed paint, part and glue application. When an AACA member has his or her car judged - it is touched. When entering a concours - cars are touched, sat in, started, and the evaluation is VERY hands-on and stressful for the owner. The thought I have is this - If you wanna compete and you wanna win - Having your finished model touched and quite possibly destroyed by accident is part of competition. The judges hands-on interaction with the model is part of the judging - like 'did any parts fall off?' Race cars get wrecked - show cars get scratched. What is nice - should a car get damaged - you get to use those parts in another kit or you get to rebuild the kit that has been damaged - changing or repairing things you wanted to but didn't get to in the first place. I'm really looking forward to hearing what others have to say about this subject. Please be kind - a different opinion isn't stupid - it's just different.
