COPO Camaro is Back!
Erik Smith replied to Patrick2005's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Actually, it looks better in the video. Why don't they share the "times"? I want to know. -

I am not too impressed with that. I am not one of those who is against all new cars, but the proportions and design are off on that. The wheels are way too small and the hood looks, as Casey said, "bulbous". Somebody with photoshop skills, please fix this for Chevrolet. -
The big weber carbs are pretty cool in this kit. I have only looked and fondled my AM version, but may pick a RM one up. The tires will be interesting, as alluded to above. The originals have Good Year on them, but RM doesn't have a license for use??? Will they mold their own tires to replace the AM tires? I wonder if they will try to pack it all into a standard size box too.

Very nice, clean build. Classic look. I like the green theme. Great job.

This is an interesting question Rob. I was not alive in 1962 (I don't know if everybody who commented knows the Cannonball CBP is taking place IN 1962), but looking through quite a few magazines, recently watching American Graffiti, and doing some online research, rake was not very popular. In fact, even cars that were lowered were nowhere near the standards of low, "in the weeds" look of today. For instance, look at the Pharaoh's '51 Mercury: Here are a couple 1962 magazine covers: I am by no means saying "no cars had rake in 1962", just putting things in perspective. There is really no wrong or right answer as I am sure there were cars with that amount of rake in 1962. What we find visually pleasing today was quite a bit different 50 years ago. A lot of the customs were not really lowered at all - if anything, they had a tail down "look" due to fender skirts, etc. This is still a hobby and your build, but you asked for some thoughts, so I am providing some of mine as I am in the CBP as well and thinking about such things.

I like this. Thanks Chris. -
Let's see your geegaws!

Anybody know what this is? It's a stuffed animal, but what animal? It's from AMT 1962 Tempest kit: -

I know the AMT 62 annual kits had the Kart parts...HERE...not sure about 61. Apparently the 63 annuals had a Triumph motorcycle. -
I buy new kits at my LHS because I can get them cheaper that online - this is not true at all LHSs, but a couple in my area discount their kits. For OOP kits, I shop through Model Express - Dennis offers exceptional service. For hard to find Kits and old built ups I go to eBay. It's not as bad as people always carry on about. I have picked up some very nice kits with decent prices. I get some paint (like Alclad II) online - I usually buy at Megahobby or eHobbies. I also troll Craigslist.

Dreaming of a model?
Erik Smith replied to jmpsebring's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This is funny. Mine usually involve finding a shelf at the LHS or a new shop I've never noticed and finding all sorts of kits never made. The problem is, when I try to go through them, I can't keep track and things change and eventually all I see are regular models. Then I frantically look around and can't find any of the "never before" kits. -
Nice Kart, Bob. I saw Ron's - really cool. It would be great to cruise in a 1:1 Kart like that. His was the Replica's resin version. Thanks for the clarification too, Tim. In 1963 I might have purchased the Ford kit for the bonus. It would be out of the question for me now - not much interest in the truck. I just think it's a fun idea to scatter a couple parts in a few kits. The remainder of the 1962 parts are in the 1962 Imperial, Mercury (not sure which Mercury? - I have a '62 Monterey but no box or parts), and the Nova. I could conceivably do those. It would cost me some. I would love to see Round2 continue with the "retro" styling on the boxes and maybe bring back something like the "Kart" or "triumph".

Touch Up Painting Mistakes During Polishing
Erik Smith replied to Nate's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Nate - are the spots just on the trunk lid? If yes, instead of reshooting the enitre body, you can mask off just the trunk. Mask on the trunk lid gap eliminating a ridge from the masking tape. I have found it easier to shoot one area than risk dust, etc. on the whole thing. -
I have seen a couple with the streamliner body Don - they are cool, thanks for posting a photo. Do you know how those were packaged when available? Did they come as parts in seperate kits like in the 62 kits? I know there is a resin version available too, but I am more interested in the story of the promotional aspect and actually getting the kits to build the Kart.
-
Nice work. Has the right look and stance. Good job on this kit - I built one years ago and remember it being pretty disheartening to a young modeler.

I have recently purchased a couple old AMT kits from 1962 and each kit includes some parts to build a bonus "Kart". Who has gathered all the parts and built the "Kart"? Let's see some pics if anybody has them. Here are the instructions from 1962 Tempest kit: and the parts from the Tempest: I have the Continental and Tempest but not sure if I have all the bonus parts. Overall, I think this is a pretty cool gimmick to get people to buy a kit they may not ordinarily buy - I would rather see something like this versus the sparkle body in the Manx kit - which I didn't get with my one purchase!

Would this be 50%?
Erik Smith replied to Darin Bastedo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
^^x2 Just the body and chassis would make up more than 50% by weight or volume. -
MPC 72 IMPALA
Erik Smith replied to MyBradKeselowski's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I would definitely build it. Those look like nice whitewall tires - a factory stock build would be great for this kit as most seem to find there way to lowrider status. Cool kit and find! -
Go to plastikote's website. You can search for a retailer on there. And as far as quality goes, I think duplicolor and Plastikote are pretty equal. Only thing is Plastikote gray is lightr than DC (which is quite dark).

I think you would feel the opposite guilt if you worked on your models and didn't play with your kids and dog. It's a mental battle for sure. The only time I feel legitimate guilt is when I spend too much time on the computer instead of building or hanging out with my kids.

That's not THE Plastikote. This is: That may be made by the same company, but I don't think it is the same product.

open testors paint jars help please.
Erik Smith replied to robdot's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Just to keep repeating above posts...run the lid under hot water then twist with a towel. Also, instead of shaking the paint to mix it up (after you clean the lid and bottle threads), try mixing with a wooden stir stick or piece of styrene. That will keep most of the paint from flowing into the threads and sealing the jar. -
remove / clean a plastic rear window
Erik Smith replied to shpapy's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
You can't paint it - unless you want to paint it black for a very tinted look. It also depends on the type of glue - if the styrene is melted, you may not be able to repair it. If it is mostly surface damage: You can buy polishing kits for the glass. I use a Micro Mesh set. It comes with sanding pads and polish (and a polishing cloth). You start at the coarsest grit and work your way down to the finest, then use the polish. It will take a bit of elbow grease and may take a few tries (I always find a few scratches I didn't get with the next grit down), but will return the "glass" to shiny and clear. -
I can only find 3 pictures of myself on my computer - and that covers a span of about 4 years. Here is one of them:
