Current releases,future value
Erik Smith replied to Greg Cullinan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You never know. Who would have thought 1971 Vega kits would be valuable? Overall, I would say a majority, like 99%, will not have collector value. Even some kits from 40 years ago that have never been reissued are lucky to break $40. Factor in 3D printing - in 30 years that tech will be the standard for parts and model creation. That takes all the builders out if the equation. -
Cool. Where is the body from?

Ultimate Rat Rod engine.

You could almost just slap some wheels and body parts... Pricewise…the other AF 1/24 kits aren't too expensive - I think most are older molds though... -

That is really cool. I love the Typhoon too. So...looking at the photos...24 Cylinders, and two plugs per cylinder? 48 spark plugs!?!? Wouldn't necessarily have to go in a Rat either - it would look good in just about anything. -
Agree 100%. We have a new driver in the house and had to do A LOT of shopping around - but eventually found a plan that worked. Rates varied tremendously. Some plans were double the cost for the same coverage. We ended up with the lowest quote from a big name company, but tried them all (well, many of them...).

Post a picture of the whole sprue. I would be interested to see how they are laid out and that might help experienced casters determine if it's possible. I would think with a two part mold that you pour resin into then squish together you could do it. Otherwise you might have problems with resin distribution and air bubbles.

I thought it was a good commercial - but hugely (is that a word) ironic. All about America and heritage etc. - from an Italian owned company! I liked the Dorritos ad near the end - the one where the kid rides the Mastiff - that's a clone of my dog.

Thanks for the picture Aaron. I have come up with pics of gas and diesel trucks with the tank door in different locations, so I really don't know. The 2007-10 Diesels did not have the urea tanks yet - I think that started with the 3 gen SD in 2011 model years. My 2009 does not have urea, 2012 does. Either I never pay attention or it's not common, but how many Super Duties have those style mirrors (on the USFS truck)? Thought they all had the two post, large style... Edit: I found the other battery on the sprue - it's attached to the coolant tank in the upper left of the sprue…good!

Lowering Revell's 49 Mercury, sedan and woody
Erik Smith replied to Austin T's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Austin - I'll send you a PM - pretty sure looking at my photos here http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=83067&page=7 ...that the lowered parts should swap in with little or no trouble - and I have the parts from a kit I've been raiding... -

They are very similar, but not the same. -

Just a thought (as I'm too lazy to get up and look right now), but I think the suspension is lowered on the '49 Merc - and similar enough you could swap it onto the Woody? I'll check if you don't have the Merc to compare... -
Very neat model. Great work.

LHS (Local Hobby Shop)
Erik Smith replied to 69NovaYenko's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
One family owned - technically, I guess. B and B Hobbies in Spokane. The Hobbytown USA is locally owned but a national franchise. White Elephant is locally owned but a general store type place with models and limited hobby supplies. Next closest is in the Seattle area...Skyline Hobbies... Oh, I stop by B and B maybe twice a month. The others if I am in the area (once a month at the most). -
Phillip Seymour Hoffman dead at 46
Erik Smith replied to Custom Hearse's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Sad, he always portrayed great characters. Kind of not surprising, though, I think he had been battling demons previously. -
I have used a large drill bit to remove the mushroomed plastic holding windows/tubs in - just go slow and it should take the plastic off the top of the tab and leave the remaining peg intact. Same with some grills and bumpers - just use a bit slightly larger that the mounting peg and remove the melted top. I find it easier to access some areas with a drill vs a knife or chisel.

Pouring over the sprue pics... most of the parts look very accurate and true to the real truck. The engine will be really cool - I would have to see one built up…but it looks good. The body is good - and I noticed the side emblems (looks like a big vent on the front fender) are molded separate (nice). The interior, while a little on the boxy side (the seats are squarish looking) looks great with the big door panel pockets and everything. Now…the gas filler door…My truck had a utility box, so I don't know where it was originally, but the images I searched show it close to the rear wheel well vs near the front of the bed…anybody have confirmation on that location? I can see only one battery on the sprues…diesels have two. As mentioned above…the kit's wheels have seven "spokes" vs 8 on the real one... I can start a reference post in the appropriate area once I get some pics of a truck...

Duplicolor questions?
Erik Smith replied to foxbat426's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Good idea warming the paint - especially the non-metallic/pearl varieties (I have had some solid colors "splat" if not warmed). BTW, their pearl colors are great as the flakes don't appear so out of scale (vs traditional metallic paints). -
