Transtar C-O 4070A Rebuild
Old Buckaroo replied to Old Buckaroo's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Thanks guys I tried to replicate the air filter canister as on the 1/1 truck. *Car guys look away* having no tubing of suitable size I robbed my parts cabinet. Oh yes 1970's Crager SS wheels (yeah the good ones) looked to be just right. Some elbows from a Snap Pete kit worked out just right also. Only the canister is mounted to the frame, everything else is held in place with "white glue" Once the Detroit is installed I will fabricate the rest. Thanks for looking in -

Rolling right along, tackled my number one nemeses - Exhaust stacks (lets not forget the piping yet not done) They may not be centered in the pic as they are just sitting on the frame for checking plumb Thanks for looking and commenting. -

That is looking so good. Amazing transformation. These kits are by far the best deal and the most fun to convert ! -

Dan - It did turn out to be a little challenging. The cab tapers slightly towards the back. So when the two pieces were lined up, there was about a 1mm lip sticking out on the rear half. With help from the Dremel and a aluminum sanding board I was able to make the two surfaces flush. Some more updates, nothing real exciting but time consuming. The interior tub now fits the cab, and we have a double bed. The floor frame - You will either want to laugh or cry at my crude method for making that section. Those are .020" strips of styrene all glued together to make one. Just to give you an idea of the old glue removal involved, I have not cleaned the interior floor yet Thanks for looking in -

Terry - Nice , let me know when you build it. You can coach me on the coorrections Clayton - I would go for the single headlight look , easier and looks way cooler ! Do you have the back section ? -

Wow, this is one of the coolest rigs ever. I cant make up my mind that amazes more - the truck suspension or the most realistic paint job ever. This looks right at home it the field next to that other truck in the background. The dog really adds character ! What kind of engine is that on the boat ? I have never seen anything like that before.

Dont delete the thread, nothing is worse then looking for a "certain build" and find one with all the content removed. Just start another one "Under Glass" with the Finished pictures. The wrecker looks great, I really like the safety bumper. He is going to have a tough time getting hooked to that KW. -

That is a nice cab. I cant wait to see what you do with it. We had a '58 Ford Dumptruck with a front drive axle for when it got real muddy. Oh it also had a snowplow blade and frame that bolted to the undercarriage. I think it may had been a State truck at one time. Had that wonderful 292 engine in it -

Thanks guys for all the interest. I got some primer on for a visual to see what needs more attention. Mark - that is a fabulous looking truck, thanks for posting it. -

Forward progress, the cab is out of the tub of SImple Green and pretty cleaned up. As mentioned earlier "I have a vision of a 1970's era OTR customized truck for this one" and this is how it is looking right now. What is that ? You have Never seen a double bunk IH ? The cab length measures out to 115 " Either your not old enough to remember or you have forgotten the era of real custom trucks. My friends I present you the picture I borrowed from an ebay auction that is the inspirition for this project. I am awestruck everytime I look at that Black truck. On the plus side I now have a IH 4070 A daycab for another project. -

Mark - that is a terrific picture. I hope you do build that up someday. I have a lot of respect for those of you that rebuild / restore old models. There is a lot more work involved then building a kit out of the box. Out of two models I am still going to come up short on parts, lots of little items will need to be fabricated. -

Fantastic looking wrecker, nice work on the lift whatever you call it . I like the deck clutter. I have always wanted to have just a rim with the sidewalls flopping around in there loose, just like a real blowout ! -

Yes leather punches work excellent for that. While I am not an advocate of poorly made chinese tools a simple punch set like this can be purchased at the "Harbor Fright" store for around $6.00 I suggest using a round needle file to remove the burrs on the cutting edge and also some fine sandpaper . Getting the disk out is a little bit of a challenge - I use a dull awl and push the disk to where it rotates to where I can grab it out of the tip with tweezers. A little clean up with a sanding stick to remove the fuzz on the disk and all is good ! -
Oh man does that bring back memories. I had this one also displayed on my shelf with Semi's as a teen. Very nice work you have done and a great idea to hide the decal flaw. I would of never suspected any different. I like the extra large First-Aid kit so they can patch up the "bad guy" after the pursuit and shoot out ! Is this kit available again ?

This is one my favorite coe's for a classic look. I acquired a old built up in a trade that need some tlc and bought another off ebay (which was a glue bomb) to try and combine the two. Truck from trade had a two piece front axle , ebay truck axle was complete but shipped in a box with no protection. Its axle turned into a three pieces. The frame had a slight tweak to it , just enough to annoy me. I cut the rear suspension off and worked the twist out (mostly) I punched out 4 round disk to compensate the air bags from the saw cut. I have a vision of a 1970's era OTR customized truck for this one with some truck stop bling to personalize it for the driver. Currently I plan on using rear two holer's (which will be chrome) from Double -Take Replicas. The cab is in a bath of Simple Green along with many other parts. Hope you find this one interesting.
