Moebius 61 Pontiac Update 1/4/16 Done!!!
MrObsessive replied to Porscheman's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Paint job looks super great! Just an observation though as I barely have gotten into the nuts and bolts of my kit yet...................... Shouldn't the lug nuts line up with the "circles" on the brake drum? That might be what's contributing to the "far away" appearance of the drum. This kit is so nice that I might clear the bench after my '59 Impala build, and dig right in! -
IMO, this is one of MPC's really underrated kits that they did! I have one, and it's PACKED full of details! VERY detailed inline six, detailed suspension, and the body shape is dead on accurate for this Gen Supra. My only complaint is the very heavy tint they used for the glass and the fog light lenses. No doubt if this kit were reissued, it would get more "conventional" glass.

While I'm not into kits such as The Flameout, it's interesting to see the review just the same. Chris does an excellent job on all of his reviews, even if that particular model is not my cup of tea. His recent review of the '72 Olds Cutlass Convertible did have me go out and get one, even though I have two of the previous releases!

If this were my car, and since this is a solid color, it really needs no clear coat. There's enough hardener in the paint that it should rub out and polish without needing it. Metallics on the other hand, you should always clear as rubbing them out disturbs the metal flakes and lends itself to a swirly, mottled appearance. The dust particles should come out as you're rubbing out and polishing the body. Hope this helps!

It opened up in my RealPlayer------I'm using Chrome BTW. Not sure what tune that is though.............

Gm used Red Oxide primer quite a bit during the late '50's/early '60's. I would say that would be correct for the floor pan colors. Of course, on any given day the factory could have used another color as that could have run out during a production run. They wouldn't stop a shift or shut things down due to lack of a paint color!

I have to agree Jairus! '61 was probably the peak of '50's jet-like styling. After that, designs became more calm, but were still certainly good looking. Interesting how Chevy was the only division to carry on the "bubble roof" for '62, while the others went with the more formal, upright style. Fins were on their way out with them completely disappearing pretty much after '64 with Buick, Olds, and Cadillac being the holdouts up to that point. I've bought one of these already, and plan to get another (if they have 'em) at my next club meeting, I also want the Catalina when it comes out later on.

Congrats Kevin! Hard to believe it'll soon be ten years for me in March when I first joined. My how time flies! And yes, I'd sure like to build more than one a year, but with the way I build, that ain't always possible!

If you want a really good source of hypodermic tubing, I've found this place here to have what you're looking for. Interesting enough, I stumbled on their site kinda by accident, as I'm looking for something very similar to use for my two/three stage antennas in 1/24/25 scale. I tried Small Parts as I had them bookmarked, but they've been bought out by Amazon. Well, I then went to Amazon, and of course the size that I need (.025" OD) was "out of stock" with a notice that said that they have no idea when or if it would be available again. Soooooo I went to eBay, and I ran across an ad for MicroGroup. I click on it and bingo!............They have just what I'm looking for and plenty of it! Hope this helps!

So, how do you post a pic from Fotki now?
MrObsessive replied to Can-Con's topic in How To Use This Board
Steve, I copy and paste the photos from Fotki. I just made a post a bit ago where I did this. A lot more reliable than using the "insert media" button that never works. I also found that to keep the photos from looking "squished" the resolution of the pics shouldn't be more than 600 x 600P or so. Hope this helps! -
I had that kit once upon a time. It was the cycle fendered version with all of the aftermarket stuff to make it superdetailed. Unfortunately, about 5-6 years ago I had to let it go due to some financial issues because of a work related injury. I did get a pretty penny for it though back then------I'd sure like to find another one though! Congrats on finding it! I see them on the 'Bay all of the time, but I'm just not of the mind to spend $400-$500 on one.................yet!

Revell "Skip's Fiesta" Series
MrObsessive replied to fseva's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I don't know more than the next guy, but I think '16 might yield some surprises. I believe the "Big 3" (I'm including Moebius in this), are going to give us some much wanted subjects. This is wishful thinking, but I'd really like to see more "oddball" stuff come from the kit makers. Who'da thought that a car such as the Starsky and Hutch Torino would be such a runaway seller?? I don't have my hopes of them ever redoing the '59 Skyliner in more modern tooling. I'd just like to see them reissue it, but this time with the right size WWW and wheels. Otherwise, aftermarket here I come! -
Adding detail to a chassis?
MrObsessive replied to Sport Suburban's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Raoul, one of the first things I try to do is find some good pics of the underside of the car if I'm planning to go that route. You can check on the 'net at places such as eBay Motors for instance. The more expensive the car (particularly from a dealer), the more likely there will be shots of the chassis. I've gone so far however and used shop manuals to give me a reference as to where things should go. Here is a pic from the assembly manual I used when I built my '57 Corvette............ OK, some of the things I use for lines and such-------bead wire in various sizes from the craft store. Some bead wire is already "chromed" which I find nice for fuel lines on the engine......really dresses things up. For emergency brake lines, I've used nylon thread as it has a coil effect which you see on those types of lines. Here are a few pics to show............... For the hangars and such for the lines, I've used thin aluminum (or brass) sheet cut into very thin strips, holes drilled, and then pinned to the chassis with tiny bolts. Tedious for sure, but adds to the realism IMO. This might be a bit much, but I hope this gives you some ideas! -
T.M. Resin on eBay
MrObsessive replied to mikemodeler's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I've got things from Jeff in the past on eBay ('71 Olds Delta 88 a while back), and the quality was super excellent! Only drawback for those who aren't skilled with his type of kits--------he gives you no glass for it, and nothing is chromed. Shipping was super fast, and I've never had any difficulties with him at all. -
Revell "Skip's Fiesta" Series
MrObsessive replied to fseva's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I built one of these years ago (early '90s?), and I didn't find it even then to be terribly difficult. My only gripe about the kit (Skip's Fiesta reissue) is that the tires and whitewalls just seemed too "big" for the rest of the car. IIRC, I thought that it was mentioned a while back somewhere that Revell used the WWW and tires from their 1/24 kits ('56 T-bird perhaps?) thus explaining the too large appearance of them------at least to my view. I have another one also, and I'd like to hang on to it. I might be inspired to build it again someday, but of course "modernizing" it with my usual compulsiveness for itty-bitty details. I wouldn't be surprised to see this one reappear someday with the kit manufacturers penchant lately for releasing stuff we thought was long gone. -
While I'm not getting the 404 Error messages here (yet), I am having a very annoying problem with the "other board" where I cannot get on their site unless I turn off my WIFI on my phone or tablet. Otherwise in my house with WIFI, all of my devices (including a PC and laptop) will "Time Out" whenever I click on the site. I've contacted them about it, and they tell me I'm not being blocked (thought it was something I said), and to ask if anyone else is having the problem. Well, I did and I was given some suggestions as to how to fix the problem. As it stands, I've tried everything I could think of and I still get the time out messages. I finally contacted Comcast and they tell me that they also are having trouble getting on the board (Spotlight). This tells me that there's some trouble on Spotlight's end, but I'm tired of trying to get on and not having any luck. And yes, I do like to post there from time to time as there are some that like to see what I'm doing, but they don't like the layout of this board. I get that so that's why I post there from time to time to keep some of those guys updated. But with this "time out error" business, I've run out of patience of trying to figure it out, and I guess I just can't post there till it gets fixed.

Y'know, the more I look at this kit, the more I'm impressed by it! It's one of those kits you just keep looking at over and over. Haven't done that to any one particular model for some time now. I think I know what color I'd like to make mine when I get to building it----------I'm torn between these two though! Hmmmmm....leaning towards the light blue-----time will tell!
-
I'll be following as well-----I've got two of these, but I wanna see what you do to it. IMO this is one of Tamiya's nicest kits, not that they've ever put out a "bad" kit, but inasmuch as when this goes out of production, prices will get high for these quickly!

Simply beautiful! I've built a few 1/43's in the past, and they can be great slump busters! I like 'em also because they don't take up near as much space as the 1/24-25th builds. Not to mention as Michael said, there are simply cars that you'll only find in 1/43------there's a much better selection in that scale than in any other!
