MPC/ERTL Indianapolis 500 Hall of Fame Set # 6426

Tom, my only experience is with the Lotus 29. My strongest recommendation would be to look into the IndyCals detail set for the car (http://www.indycals.net/parts/indyparts/63lotus29upgrade.html). It costs $38 + S&H but you get new tires, a corrected nose, a vacuform windshield, and new decals. Here's a pic of my Lotus just so you can see the difference. Good Luck with your builds! -
Wow, Peter, congratulations on some great builds! I've got several of these kits and recently started the Cadillac. I hope it turns out half as nicely as yours. Could you describe how you painted the white walls on the Caddy and the '59 Chevy? Great Job, once again.

Really nice build of a very fiddely kit. Great Work, Steve!

Nice build. One of my favorite Ferraris!

Thanks again for the kind words. Tom, the kit isn't hard to build, but just lacks a lot of detail. If I had to use the kit tires, I wouldn't have built it - they're that bad. There are lots of chrome plated parts that need to be stripped and pained with the correct metallic colors. The engine placement is a little vague, so make sure you do a lot of test fitting because where the engine sits determines where the rear suspension ends up. The rear springs look pretty bad so I made some new ones from aluminum wire. Don't bother with the front ones because they're inside the front bodywork. If you can find a replacement for the seat, you may want to use it. The one in the kit is pretty weak. I had an extra one from the Olsonite Eagle kit and used that one. I don't have any connection with IndyCals, but if you want to build this kit, I'd consider getting their detail set. The parts are well done and the decals are a huge improvement over the ones in the kit. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the kind comments, Guys. Gene, the exhaust headers are just the kit parts painted with Metalizer (Titanium, I think). The tires are part of the IndyCals transkit and are a huge improvement over the kit tires. They come in white resin and the ones on this model are painted in Tamiya gloss black acrylic, decaled, and sprayed with satin acrylic. Thanks for clarifying the heritage on the kit, Art. I knew AMT was involved, but didn't know at what point.

This is the old 1/25 MPC Lotus 29 from the Indianapolis 500 Hall of Fame 3-kit set. It represents Jimmy Clark's Second Place finisher in the 1963 Indy 500. I detailed the engine and cockpit, and added the IndyCals resin corrected nose, windscreen, and tires. Paint is Tamiya Racing Green decanted and airbrushed with IndyCals decals. There are some things I'm still not happy with. The rear engine cover does not fit well and the injector stacks are a bit too tall. If I ever find some better intakes, I'l switch them out and try to fix the engine cover at the same time. For now, though, I'm calling it done! Any comments, positive or negative, are welcome. Thanks for looking!

Fantastic job! I actually thought the first few pics were of the real car you were going to model. Beautiful work.

Monogram Ultimates - Together for the First Time!

Thanks for the kind words, Guys. -
These are the 1/43 Monogram Ultimate Cobra and Corvette. The Vette is box stock, the Cobra has some engine details added. Paint on both is Tamiys spray decanted and airbrushed. These are outstanding kits and it's too bad Monogram/Revell didn't continue the series. All comments, positive and negative are welcome. Thanks for looking>

Best effort so far

Looks good, Bill, even upside down. What kit and paint did you use? -
Wow! Absolutely beautiful work. I have this model on my future project list and I'll be using your pictures for reference. Great Job!

Thanks for the kind words, Guys. Michael, the Tamiya kit represents the Lotus Honda 99T. It has a yellow scheme with Camel sponsor markings. Other than that, the exterior was identical to the 98T, so the only thing I changed to represent the previous year's car was to paint it black and add the JPS decals. Joe, unfortunately this one is a "curbside". The 99T used a Honda engine but the 98T Lotus was powered by Renault. The kit valve covers are engraved with "Honda" and I'm sure there are other differences between the engines. Rather than try to accurately represent the Reanult engne, I just left the rear of the car buttoned up. Thanks again for the comments and questions.

Beautiful build, Jurgen. -
This is the Tamiya 1/20 Lotus 99T backdated to Senna's ride in 1986 using the Museum Collection decals. The build is otherwise box stock. Paint is Tamiya spray decanted and airbrushed. All comments, positive and negative, are welcome. Thanks for looking!

Once again, Guys, thanks for the kind comments.

Dave, you're correct. After I saw your note, I checked my RMM catalog and, sure enough, item W-6 is a 1/25 Kurtis wheel and tire set for $8.95. I'll send Norm an order for a couple of these today. Thanks for the heads-up!
-
Thanks again, Guys. Ray, you're right, it needs an extra set of wheels and tires on the trailer. I have another kit, but want to build it. I may buy another one and put a couple of extra tires on each trailer. If nothing else, it needs extra weight in front. I had to add some sheet lead under the front of the trailer on this one to keep the tail from dragging.

Thanks, Guys, for the kind words.

I've had a couple of these kits in my stash since they came out in 2010, but when I picked up the V-R-M decals for them at the IPMS Nationals, I had to build one. The kit is pretty straightforward, but a lot of the parts are really delicate and require some care and patience to get right. I added some engine details, rear nerf bars, and seat snaps, but the model is basically box stock. Paint is Tamiya Metallic Red and Racing White decanted and airbrushed, followed by some Omni clearcoat. All the chrome was stripped and repainted with Alclad and Metalizer. All comments, positive and negative, are welcome. Thanks for looking!

Really nice work, Steve. One of my favorite cars. Did you use the kit decals for the orange stripes or did you paint them? If you used the decals, what paint did you use to get such a good match on the front valence?
