Glad to finally understand the reason for the weird look to the rear end of the Protar kit. I have a couple of the Revell re-boxed sitting around as well as the Fujimi and Italeri to compare. For building a replica of most of the racing versions, the Protar / Revell kit is not so hot a starting point in my opinion. A great deal of rear end reconstruction would be required. Perhaps that is why many were sad at the choice of the Protar kit to re-box......... .

Yep I am! As a relatively small portion of the kit buying public, I suppose I should be happy with what is doled out...not! The RSR was the OBVIOUS choice to kit, but nope, Fujimi knows better. Ah well, you do what you have to do to build the subject you want, right? As to the interior panels, what's wrong? they are pretty plain in reality, or have I missed something???

As is somewhat typical for Fujimi, we get a pretty accurate curbside of an exciting car. For those of us that follow the ALMS, and Grand Am road racing series, this kit is NOT correct for either of these series. ALMS allows the much wilder RSR version of the GT#, and the Grand Am series is much closer to the road going GT3 than any of the R variants. Still, what is in the box is pretty good. A very well executed interior with full roll cage and racing seat in a stripped racing interior pan. The chassis is nice, with simplified suspension details which are admittedly hidden by the aero chassis an ground effect rear tunnels. So what then causes the ho hum reaction? The body. It is not the current or even recently current RSR. The nose is completely wrong for the ALMS racer, though not too far off for the Grand Am car. And the front hood design is at least one generation off in regards to the radiator air extractor, though this I believe can be easily corrected. One thing that you will certainly need to replace though are the wheels, as they are not close to the correct BBS wheel design. The aftermarket to the rescue here. All is not lost though, as the Scale Auto slot racing body kit is very easily adapted to the Fujimi chassis and interior. I am planning on two different builds of this car, and hope to have in progress photos as I get along with the builds.

ALMS...lost another one
IMSANUT replied to Nick F40's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
And the truth can now be told.....ALMS and the France families Grand Am will merge in 2014. I'm not real hopeful for this from a racing stand point. The Daytona Prototypes are a LOT slower than ALMS's P1 cars. -
Scratch Build-- 1991 Caracal D Formula Vee
IMSANUT replied to RazorHog512's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Cool. I have been collecting pieces to build a similar car. I've taken a bunch of pictures at the June Sprints at Road America for years. I'm surprised you did not start with the Tamiya VW engine..... -
Nice build of a great kit.

Nice! I have this kit to build and to restore. You're right, the supplied wheels suck. I'll be building the Red Lobster version using Patto's decals.
-
I'd be curious to know the inaccuracies vs a vie the IMSA version of the car. This kit, or the Le Mans Miniatures version is one of the holes in my IMSA GTP collection of kits to build. Very nice work on a beautiful car.

I wish the pictures were still up..... I saw many an IMSA race in person, and have been collecting as many as is possible to build. There are more 962 variants than you'd imagine that can be done with available decals and resin bodies. Let us not also forget the Mustang GTP offered by Monogram. It was accurate ONLY for the 7 11 version. I did an article for MRRN years ago to correct the Motorcraft kit to the version that won it's first race at Road America. The Ford Probe and BMW March were bodied by Tamiya, and Quick Skins did the Probe as a curbside kit. The Porsche 996 spyder was roughly done by Umi, and is expected to be released in two versions soon. Formula Canada did a great Lola kit and a poor March kit. The later is due to be redone by the same company that'll be doing the 996. Renaissance did the Group 44 Jag, and the Toyota Eagle Nk III has been done as well as the TWR Jaguar XJR 14, and the Nissan ZX. The Spice Chassis is sadly missing from the mix as is the second Eagle, the Mazda GTP and the Intrepid. Gurney ran the Toyota Toms Group C car for almost an entire season starting at Daytona.

Very nice. Here's to hoping my restoration to an old plastic version comes out near as close to this!

Very nice. I must get back to my conversion of a 944 Turbo into my 1983 normally aspirated 944 using Monogram 924 and Itelari Turbo parts............

Outstanding builds!

Very nice work. Makes me want to dig into my stash of Indy Cars..............

Very nice build. Currently planning on a pair of these cars using Scale Auto slot bodies on Fujimi kits for the Falken and Flying Lizard GT3 RSR's from Sebring a few years back.

Beautiful build of the vintage Aurora kit. I have a pair of these in the build pile, one intended for an old slot car body of the RSK to go along with an old resin trans kit. Wonderful subject done right. Bravo.
-
Nice. Did you have issues getting the nose to line up with the Tamiya body?
-
Mine is built to replicate our long lost 85 GTI Mars red and all!

Beautiful Mr. Drew. Beautiful.

Very nice. I've been restoring an old built one for a few years now. Still need pieces to replace damaged ones.

What scale is this, and if it's 1/24th where did you get it???

A pair of vintage racers; 289 Cobra and Porsche RS60 UPDATE
IMSANUT replied to Zoom Zoom's topic in Model Cars
They are both beautiful replicas. Fujimi 356 wheels would be perfect. Makes me want to get my ebay bought body done up right! -
Nice. I have one awaiting restoration. I love the lines of this car.
