help with getting a good finish
High octane replied to stulee11's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Stu, I usually start out by washing the body and all parts in dishwashing soap and water, rinse, and dry to avoid water spots. I then lightly sand the body with 600 or 1000 grit to rough it up a bit. I then mount the body on a paint holder, wipe it with a tack rag and then give it a coat of primer. The next day or two, I'll check to see if the primer covered everything. If it did I'll lightly sand the primer with 1000 grit, wipe the body again with my tack rag, mount it and spray on a light color coat. I'll wait 20 minutes and then spray on another light color coat. In another 20 minutes I'll warm the can of paint in warm water for about 6-8 minutes and then spray a wet and final color coat. The next day I'll check the paint and if okay I'll wipe it again with my tack cloth and spray on a light clear coat. 20 minutes later another clear coat, and 20-30 minutes later another wet clear coat with a heated can of clear. I'll then let the body sit for two or three weeks and then I'll poilish it out using "wet" sanding cloths of 4,000, 6,000. 8,000, and 12,000 grits. I'll then use Slick & Smooth from Mike's Scale Speed Shop or the Treatment Wax or Mequires polish. This method works for me and I'm sure other builders will have another way of doing their paint jobs.Remember not to use too much paint or you'll cover all the details on the body. I hope this helps. -
Nice "Bird."

I think that Hobby Lobby still has those trucks available, grab a coupon and check it out.

I think this section is for Model Car Racing such as slot cars and R/C cars.

AMT Double Dragster -Tin Edition
High octane replied to Tom Jackson's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
That is a great kit as I'm working on one now and have a few more in my "stash." I WILL post pictures when I finish it. -
Nice job on that roadhouse diorama. How about a dio of the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing? LOL!

bandit1, I have several projects started and several waiting to be started also so I really don't know if I'll be getting to that Cobra anytime soon or if at all.

At our club meeting last night we had our annual auction and this was the only Item I had snagged, a Cobra 427 kit in 1/16th scale and still factory sealed.

Thanks guys for posting your ball-buster dragsters as all of them look good. When I'll get to mine is anybody's guess.

Buying more than is financially healthy
High octane replied to Jantrix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've bought a good number of kits this year and I'll be trying to cut back on my spending on kits for awhile as I have WAY too many kits that I'll never finish in my lifetime. I know that some guys have a thousand or more kits, some three thousand, but I myself am not going that route. I have passed on a couple of high dollar kits only because they're not worth that much to me. and if I did buy them, they would be on the pile with the rest of the kits that I have waiting to be built. What I need most is motivatiion to build everyday and to finish kits. I have the time, but I don't use it wisely enough to be where I want to be in this hobby. -
I'm re-posting these photos from yesterday as I was cleaning up my photobucket last night and realized that I had deleted these pics. It is Danbury Mint's '59 Pontiac Bonneville. I guess I'll never be a computer guru like my wife is. LOL!

I used a small eye bolt in the rear end cover ot this altered and attached the chute lines to it. The hardware as well as the cord came from Hobby Lobby. I hope this helps. -
Need some advice on what resin engine to purchase
High octane replied to Flyboyz1011's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I would use the 427 from Revell's '69 Yenko Nova if I were building it. -
I don't have to sneak any kits into my house, I just bring 'em in. When I'm 6 foot under my wife is going to have to find a way to get them all out! LOL!

The Brown Truck stopped by today and dropped off Danbury Mint's latest offering of a Pontiac Bonneville convertible which is Pontiac's first Wide-Track car. The model features opening doors, hood, trunk, gas cap door, movable seat backs & visors, retractable antenna, a boot or raised convertible top, and of course skirts too. I just HAD to have this one.

Dodge A100 van
High octane replied to Lownslow's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
That van looks cool and the paint and murals are just right. I kinda like Johnny's idea of using the aluminum slot wheels as I think that it would look better IMHO. I have one of those van bodies in my stash, but I just may use it to haul a trailer with a drag car on it??? -
YES, the '57 Ford is a new tool and is on my list of kits to buy even though I'm trying to scale-back on my kit buying.

building a model for money ?
High octane replied to dabelltoller's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I have enough trouble finishing models for myself, yet alone others so I NEVER build for anyone else anymore. I've built two models as gifts for other people over the years and that's the end of it. I know of several guys who build for money and I'm sure that there are a lot more. If it works for you and you can use the money, go for it. -
Nice job on both of the Corvairs. I had bought one new in '65 and enjoyed it.

Awesome job on that Nova so far Jeff as it is lookin' good! Really nice chassis detailing also.

Skip's Fiesta Drive-in was an AWESOME place back in the mid to late 60's and I was glad that I got to hang out there and enjoy the many cars that passed through that place. There are stories of guys taking their rails off the trailers and racing in front of Skip's! And I do remember the "raid" there, as there were so many gumballs flashing on the cop cars, I though it was Christmas with all those lights. And buses to load the offenders and take them down to the station. What a night!
