2024 Cannonball Run Restomods Build Thread
oldcarfan replied to White Rabbit's topic in Community Builds
If you want to read it from the horse's mouth, this is a good book to get. In 2019 our kids were graduating High School and getting ready to move out so we took a long delayed family road trip. We drove from Austin, Texas to Lake Tahoe, then down to San Francisco and back to Austin. We hit all the attractions, stopping in Roswell, New Mexico to see the alien themed museum, the Grand Canyon, and of course Bonneville. This is a picture I took on the interstate as we neared the Salt Flats. My wife had just taken over the driving after she noticed I had us cruising at 97 mph. Even then we had been passed by several SUVs, a few sedans, and a Highway Patrol car who zipped by and pulled off the road shortly thereafter to go into a fast food place. Also, here is another article on the last original Cannonball Run. They had done all the others with no issues, but I think Yates felt it was getting too commercial and too crazy. It was just a matter of time before something happened. The second article is about the official Cannonball successor, the One Lap Of America, a more organized and controlled, but still fun followup. In between were a few off-brand unofficial races, the US Express, and some others. https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a15135751/the-last-cannonball-feature/ https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/articles/one-lap-origin-story/ -

You did a great job on that! Wouldn't it be nice if Atlantis or Revell still had this tooling and could reissue this? -
The Future of Revell...for 2024 at least.

I grew up building the MPC kits so I have a sentimental attachment. I'd definitely love to see them invest some money into updating the kits, maybe redoing and updating the tools, and maybe fixing some of the poorly done retooling they did over the years. -
Drove down to Austin to see the new grandbaby and made a quick pit stop at Hobby Town. They didn't have much I needed, but I couldn't pass these two up for the price. Also got some Tamiya primer since I'm getting low.

I came across this a while back and was really impressed. Now that I'm working on a photo backdrop, I need to make one of these!

I'm envious over those Dodge vans! Every time someone from Round 2 asks for comments, I tell them to backdate the van tooling or to clone it to make a 72ish Dodge van, and also maybe to do a 1999ish Dodge van for all us Dajiban fans.

I'm hoping that this kit will sell well and perhaps inspire Revell to also do a new tool or modified reissue Blazer for Sheriff Brody's Jaws Blazer. -

That looks amazing! I think I saw one of these a few months ago here in Texas. It had Mexico license plates. -

I got the interior pretty much settled today on the Night Train Expedition. It carries a 40 fuel cell on top of the standard 17 gallon stock tank. I wanted it to look loaded, so I filled the back with tanks and hoses. I found the prison divider used on the police version and put it in place to keep the stuff in the back where it should be in case of emergency. The seats are from a Porsche GT3 with custom upholstery. The truck will carry a complete array of electronic surveillance and countermeasures as that used to be my job back in the Navy. The center stack between the seats has radar detectors, a CB, and some other things that could be illegal if it were real. There's an iPad on the dash in front of the passenger and if I can find room, it'll also have a laptop. -
A heads up, I keep getting a sponsored ad for this place and wonder if it is real. I tried Googling with no luck. It sounds too good to be true, so I assume it is too good to be true.

Why was the Supernatural 67 Impala 4 door kit discontued?
oldcarfan replied to GMP440's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
My guess is we'll see it as a family car, police car, etc. No doubt it will come out with stock steel wheels and hubcaps of some sort. -

It's been a while since I made any progress. I've been putting off getting the engine in the frame because I was worried about breaking it. However I forced myself to sit down and tackle it and it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I ended up cutting away a lot of the frame and adding to it on the outside. Here it is being test fitted with the body. Everything clears! The hood fits better than it looks like in the picture, my fingers were in the way. -
Another Dupli-Color primer question
oldcarfan replied to NOBLNG's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I'd guess that was a bad can. I've had Rustoleum and Testor's paints do that, but so far my Duplicolor primer has worked with no problems. -
I often use Sharpies to color clear light lenses. They come in red, yellow, and orange. The red ones are obvious, but the orange ones look amber when used for turn signals. The yellow ones work pretty well for fog lights.

Every Easter, Jeep unveils a series of Easter Jeeps at Moab. In honor of that, I chose to do my own Easter Jeep. It's two days late because I lost the windows. I'd given up on finding them and was packing away the project when I found them. The kit is based on a Revell Snap kit I got at HL a few years ago on clearance for $2.98. They discounted it because it was missing the headlights and wheels. I dragged it out and went to work. The first thing was to give it a raised roof because why not? I cut off the flares and added some rubber ones with the wheels and tires from a Maisto 1/27th Jeep. The headlights and bumpers were stolen from a smaller scale Jeep, too. I painted it a nice Easter pastel green shade from Krylon and added some Gundam decals. Anyway, that's it for my three day build.

I have the AMT or MPC whichever it is, version somewhere. Is it the same kit, just reboxed?

What did you see on the road today?
oldcarfan replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Not on the road but close! This is on a used car lot a couple blocks from the house. It's a GMC heavy duty panel but it is very long. Could it have been a Civil Defense truck? That would explain the color. I can't see any rust on it and it looks complete though a little sun faded. Would make a good reatoration project or resto-rod. -

Don't know if anyone wants to see this, but here is a photo tour of a 1:1 car that Ed Bolian bought to fix up into a 2904 winner. The 2904 is one o the spiritual descendants of the Cannonball. The car seems pretty generic but there are some good shots of the fuel cell and some of the electronic surveillance devices used. https://edbolian.com/a-photo-tour-of-the-2904-winning-mercedes-s55-amg/ -
I bought two of the Aoshima food trucks from Lionheart Hobby and decided to do something different with them. This is the first completed one. I decided to turn it into a pint-sized overland truck and this is the result. Walmart has some interesting toys that proved to be a good source for parts. The Maisto mini trucks are 1/43rd-ish scale and are a good source for small vehicle parts. I bought a couple of them for $3.79 each and broke them down for parts. As for the actual Kei truck, it has steerable front wheels and I reversed the steering knuckles to raise the front and put a beam axle on the rear to raise it. The wheels are from the little Maisto trucks and scale out to about 12-13 inches in 1/24th scale. In my head, I figure you could use UTV wheels and tires to make it work. The roof light bar and the spare tire are from another Maisto mini truck and the winch, headlights, and taillights are from a Jada Toys 1/34th scale Jeep, another good source for smaller sized parts and tires. The Kei trucks are really tiny in real life, a lot of ranchers in my area are using them for utility vehicles. My pictures aren't great, but I used a 1/24th Welly Porsche Cayenne as a size reference.
