leave everything to your imagination re photobucket. I bought one of these last night; it's probably one of AMT's best efforts. had intended to simply rob it for parts but it's too nice... there'll be another Olds on my shelf soon.

have always loved this kit. have built it in so many different ways I can't keep track... even have or had one somewhere that has the AMT '57 Fairlane chassis and running gear under it. talk about having to cut a load of plastic away.... disregard the kit instructions regarding the window unit; cut that sucker in two and trim the bottom of the front carefully to get it nice and tight in the opening. OOB it will NOT fit right, and cause the dash to go wonky. there's LOTS of room in that cab to add kick panels and better door trim. it also has the second best AMT Flathead representation out there IMHO, second to the '49 Merc. unfortunately AMT never added ANY hopup parts for the Flathead, but all the stuff from either the '49 Merc or the '50 Ford will fit the block. keep in mind also that Ford didn't offer a chrome grille for this truck; it's nice and pretty but it's not OEM. the stock grille included is the high-end version with grille "teeth"; if they don't suit you, substitute the parts from the MPC flipfront truck (it has a nice set of chrome bumpers, plain grille, and even a bed with "tubs" already added (they don't really clear anything on a stock frame build). I even checked one of my spare Desoto Firedome hemis from that kit for fit with parts from the Double Dragster hemi... a little fiddling and they fit fine, so adding a blower is an option. Norm Grabowski had a 1:1 that he had the peak in the hood worked out of.... that's a lot of metalwork kids. pics of his truck ought to come up if you Google it. I think of this kit as a blank canvas for artistic expression; one of my all-time favorites.

63 Dart Wagon Limo_One-Off_"Nun Runner"
62rebel replied to 69NovaYenko's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
yeah; I'd think a Pope would necessitate at least a full-size Chrysler if not an Imperial. -
always been a little apprehensive about doing that one.... your's turned out great.

I think he's trying to represent the visible rubber edge beside the chrome/stainless trim. maybe a paint marker edge-on would work; I seldom go to that length on my kits. wiper blades, yeah..... going back and looking at a lot of my builds, I see where 1:1's would be showing weatherstripping under the edge of the window tops on hardtops with the windows "down" (since almost no kits have full glass).... using dissimilar paint might help prevent the black "rubber" color affecting the silver (if painted) trim when applying. just throwing a few suggestions out there.

The Model Car of My Dreams
62rebel replied to Lovefordgalaxie's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
actually looks more Chrysler-inspired from the dash, but definitely Soviet in the steel. not a big fan of the fastback design, but not only would I love to have a kit, I'd love to have one of the 1:1's. -
when I saw the chrome tree and there are sidepipes in it, I was confused at first... then the "street racer" reissues popped up! any more info on how well the SOHC is represented in this one? love that engine..... built an F350 kit years ago with one in it.

that is fantastic. there were still a lot of these stations in use when I was still living in and near Lynchburg Va in the 90's. not many were still service stations, but there were a couple. be sure to put a grease pit in there.

Full working plastic car model- vintage

looks like a Cadillac engine in a shortened '49-51 Ford chassis........ and it looks beautiful. -
General Concern About Kit Leaf Springs
62rebel replied to Skydime's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Kevin, you gave an excellent example of what to do if any part of a kit doesn't suit your expectations or desires. make your own! we're modelers, after all.... we're supposed to be working past simply sticking the parts in the box together. even if that means simply swapping parts at first.... painting details and adding wires, piping, belts.... each new skill a step further along. I traded models with a fellow student in grade school who built raised suspensions with pieces of broken pencils, of all things.... not cut to length or anything, just pieces of pencils. rebuilding HIS gluebombs was a definite challenge and drew heavily on my sparse collection of spare parts. HE liked them, though; that was what counted to him. -
this one was a lot easier to get completed well than the heavily-detailed MPC similar kit with so many "functional" parts.... for a kid with twelve thumbs like I had in those days. this reissue brings memories of $2.79 kits and .15cent glue and paint!

bwuhahahaha! that's fer sure.

triumph heralds/spitfires/gt6's have a scaled-down version of this frame. I sense a lot of worry over how older cars fared in collisions.... no better or worse in their time than modern cars. certain design features that eventually became obviously dangerous were modified, like collapsible steering columns, fixed rear-view mirrors, plain steel dashes..... but it's ALWAYS been safer when buckled up properly and aware of your surroundings. people have always and will continue to drive well past their AND their car's limitations, and there is nothing that can be added to a car to negate the stupidity of the operator.

I saw, and couldn't for the life of me, figure out why you didn't blank out the Ram on the hood.... not that it helped me find the car!

Next build
62rebel replied to Field_Artillery63's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
those style flames resemble Watson's work; so, yep; appropriate for '60's.... those "donkey" rims aren't, though. -
one of my all-time favorite 'Vette kits. sure, it's got a fairly generic platform chassis and promo-style interior tub, but this one is where detail painting makes all the difference for a shelf-sitter. great extra parts as well.

'64 Riviera winner

20,000 hours. well; if he likes it...... -
Harry; your work is astounding. like has been said elsewhere, these are almost indistinguishable from the 1:1, imho.
-
two and a third; one extra set of chromed spoke rims and dished rear mags. the tin box supposedly got two FULL trees for those with the extra set of Chevrolet chrome parts. besides, if I turn the box upside down to look at it, the contents will fall out. I'm busily building these critters.

Mustang 60's fastback question
62rebel replied to GLMFAA1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
v8's were in such high demand for the regular car lines, Mustangs predominately came with sixes until production ramped up on the smallblocks. remember; Mustangs weren't Ford's bread and butter cars. that being said; many more Mustangs now HAVE v8's than Ford ever installed in them.... same as with Camaros, Barracudas and Challengers. more v8's than factory sixes now by far. -
it's still somewhat of a buyer's market; Hobbytown has them at full price. Hobby Lobby had maybe eight different recent kits resigned to clearance; the Ghoul Duo were being clearanced but while I like them, I don't think there's as much value in the box. bargains are where you find 'em!

Chevy bow tie logo goes functional
62rebel replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
i thought the bowtie already had a function... to warn away potential buyers. -
i recently picked up one of the boxed kits on clearance at Hobby Lobby, and having read through this thread i was somewhat apprehensive of finding unusable parts, etc... well; i was SO impressed with the coolness in that box i went BACK and scored two more. mind you that there was no colored glass and no second full tree of chrome, but the sheer load of sixties' performance stuff AND two decent quickchange differentials made it worth every cent IMHO. toss in the new piecrust slicks and i'm grinning like the Cheshire cat. trouble is, i gave away ALL of my thirties' models a couple of years ago... all of my A's and Deuces are long gone...... as far as i'm concerned, AMT (present owners) can reissue any darn thing they want to. i'll be more than willing to buy one, at least.

go back and hit those "Starliner" logos with gold; they're anodized and not chrome... if you REALLY want it to depict a worst-case-scenario, grind away the backside of the ribbed rear quarter trim and let it "fold out" from the fender, like MY car's did.... my first "old" car when i was 21....
