Revell 1/16 Hawaiian FC - a posthumous tribute
DanR replied to DanR's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Stephen, I sprayed it over a silver base coat. I think it looks good when compared against pics I've seen. -
Thanks for the nice comments, guys. PL has some nice funny car kits, maybe Round 2 can see their way to improving the instructions for future releases!

This is my second PL funny car and it wasn't much easier than the Gas Ronda Mustang. Polar Lights instructions leave a lot to be desired, particularly when it comes to assembling the interior panels and applying the decals. Some help with the decals sure would be nice. Regardless, I think it came out pretty good in the end!

Bob Terry, I made no modifications to the axle. It's a straight, out of the box build. And thanks again everyone for all the nice comments! -

Stephen, the color is Tamiya's Metallic Blue straight from the can. -

Thanks Jim. He was a good man and had a relatively long life. Diabetes probably robbed him off 5-10 more years, but I'm grateful for the time I had! Ironically, he wouldn't appreciate the finished model. He got me into modeling, but he always saw it as a creative diversion. I turned it into an obsession. -
Tom, I'm not sure, I don't have one of the PL kits to use as a basis of comparison. It's pretty big! I would guess that the body of the car is closer to 1/20 scale overall.

Today I completed Revell's Hawaiian Funny Car kit. I'm very happy with the end result. This was a challenging build with several parts fit issues as well as misleading wire lengths called out in the kit instructions. Patience won out in the end and I have a finished model that I am proud to put on the shelf. The project is a bit bittersweet for me. The first car kit that I can ever remember building was a 1/16 Revell FC kit that my father bought for me when I was maybe 8. It was unpainted, a total glue bomb, but it was fun and it was probably the kit that eventually set me on this crazy path of building scale cars. My father passed away in April, right around the time the kit hit the shelves. I felt compelled to build it and to build it right. Partly for the recreation of a great childhood memory, and partly I suppose as a tribute to a great, fun, creative guy who I miss just about every day of my life...

This build makes me want to buy the kit. Great work.

Thanks for the comments, guys. It's a pretty cool kit, I highly recommend it!

Thanks Chris! I had a lot of fun with this one.

This was a great, fun build and I hope Moebius continues to release these. As a Willys fan, this was the one I wanted the most, so naturally, when it came out, I bought it immediately. The kit is a nice "palate cleanser;" one of those kits you build in between larger projects because it's relatively easy to assemble and looks great on the shelf. A word of advice to anyone considering this kit - don't follow the Moebius instructions completely. The figure should NOT be fully assembled prior to final assembly. The right arm simply will not fit through the passenger side window if it's complete. Assemble the figure in its entirety minus the right arm. Attach all fingers to the right arm EXCEPT the thumb. This will allow you to snake the arm through the window, insert the remainder of the driver, attach the arm to him, and then attach the thumb. The downside is a very visible thumb joint, but it's a small price to pay to avoid greater overall damage to the body or the figure.

What paint did you use for the body?

Guys - can anyone suggest a reasonable correct color for this kit? I read that Tamiya Metallic Blue might be close. I'd prefer something out of a can if possible. Thanks!

Donn, seriously, I was never offended. I figured you were stressed and probably a bit overwhelmed. I have a thick skin and I was just happy to get one of your DVDs and see some of your work!

The highlight of the show for me was Donn Yost's table. In the past, Donn has been cordial, but not overly friendly, which I figure is just his way and I was certainly never offended. This year I attended with the little woman, who is petite and cute with long blonde hair. Wow did Donn perk up when we appoached the table. She got a big smile from him, made some jokes at my expense, and then they both had a good laugh. Donn you sly perv, now that I know she's my secret weapon, I'll be back with her next year to see if I can negotiate for some discount merchandise!!

I'm wrapping up one of the Lindberg Dodge Monster truck kits and this thing is impressive. The kit was a lot of fun to build and should prove to be only mildly challenging for an experienced builder. The most difficult part is the frame assembly. It requires certain components to be added prior to adding the right side half, so you have to stop frequently to make sure things are lined up. This thing is huge. I have to polish the body, add all glass, and add decals and then I'm done. Here's my progress so far: And for fun, here's a pic of alongside a Monogram NASCAR T-Bird chassis

This is just a great kit. I built one a few months back for the Mrs. but really wanted to put my own spin on it. The build is box stock, painted with Testors One-Coat White Lightning. I didn't clear it because I wanted it to have a less glossy finish. Decals are parts box finds and were perfect. I may eventually do a third!

Thanks guys!

Can anyone help me out with the correct color for a 57 T-Bird? It appears to be a pale yellow, almost a cream. Also, is there a Testors or Tamiya match?

Eric, I thought the same thing. I may have put them on incorrectly.
