15 years ago --yes today---no acrylics are a category there are probably a couple dozen or more types of "acrylic" paints in that category is the thinner interchangeable between all of them .. no what works with one brand, will turn another to goo there is no "generic acrylic thinner" across the board the closest thing might be water

How Technologically Savvy Are You?
scalenut replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I wish they would lay off the graphics on tv shows anymore ...I mean do we really need to see the american pickers dragging things around on the lower part of the screen every 5 minutes? I know it's coming on next...jeeze. I notice now the history channel is ticker-taping random facts across the bottom of the screen, for no reason , and the facts have nothing to do with the show I'm watching. watching tv is becoming more and more like playing a role player game.. box's popping up ... things scrolling ,, overlays ... good grief. -

lol , I saw that too , the wife buys the milk that is like water already , I couldn't fathom putting ice in it -
I've always used the testors thinner for their acrylics,,works great The mm acryls can be fussy but they really do spray great and brush very nice as well. using a generic thinner is a toss-up. you can start having issues with tip dry, grainy texture...adhesion problems considering your only using drops of thinner most of the time a bottle of the testors thinner goes a long way. and I have not had any of those issues so far. some of my bottles are 5 or more years old and still work fine , just need more thinning with them

clear coat hardner gelling too soon
scalenut replied to Sixx's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
yep ... the same resin and hardener I bought 5 years ago. I keep it stored indoors on a closet shelf with the press -n-seal over the tops of the cans. if it was left in the garage or shed it would probably be toast by now. -
patrick , on the model master acryl , there is no set ratio . the different colors vary so much in thickness you almost have to go by each color as to how much to thin , some don't need thinning at all , some are so thick you have to heavily thin. I just eyeball the MM acrys and do some test sprays, till it's flowing right. they also separate easily and require a really good mixing before using. it doesn't hurt to strain them also, you can use a small piece of pantyhose for that. some of the colors are bad about forming tiny blobs over time that are hard to break up

chris , most of the time I leave it uncleared the only clear I have used over Alclad chrome so far is Future. I typically use it for smaller items ,largest being grills and bumpers . when I do future, I dip them and drain on a paper towel, covering with a bowl while they dry. same technique some people use on windshields/glass. I have no experience with the alclad clears.

Wierd airbrush setup
scalenut replied to Kit Basher's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
it would be much better to have a regulator/filter so you could adjust the air to a specific pressure. -
wow ,,includes the shepard paine book too!

That's why I like to fit stuff before painting , a lot of older kits benefit from that bigtime nice looking car I like the color !

My Downdraft Paint Booth Finished
scalenut replied to Big Daddy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I was thinking of using white adhesive shelf liner on mine, so if it got too crusted it could be peeled and replaced. sounds like glad press and seal(similar to Harry's saran wrap idea) might be a good sacrificial layer.
