Bottled Flat Aluiminum Paint - Suggestions?
jeffbrad replied to larrygre's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm another one who brushes metalizers. Works fine, just usually takes a couple coats. As for mixing, I always drop a couple bb's in a new bottle. Kinda stirs while shaking lol. Just don't use steel bb's in acrylic paints. Don't ask how I know -
Painting Exhaust systems and transmissions???
jeffbrad replied to crowe-t's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Mike I just started playing with that Vallejo this week. Just used it on the transmission in the 49 Olds I'm working on. Let it dry then hit with a black wash. Came out great. -

Which Primers Do you Perfer?

Plasti kote t235 if you can find it. Harder and harder to find it. Heard the Valspar from Lowes is the same but have not verified. Never have had any crazing or bleed through using it. Car Quest stores used to carry it but I heard they now carry the Duplicolor line -
Ford 427 FE vs 428 FT -- differences?
jeffbrad replied to Matt Bacon's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
They all played around with the true displacement. Ford called the later 302's 5.0's even though they were 4.9 and change. A friend raced a 67 Olds 442 many years ago and when he set a record they checked it with the P&G. It pumped out to 396 cubes , not 400 as Olds called it. That's the first time I've heard the story about the Ford 427. -

I believe it was available in the squarebirds now that you mention it. -
Yet another newbie Duplicolor question
jeffbrad replied to Stryker3285's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Agree. Always a good idea to use the same brand of paint if possible. I always BMF after the paint is done. Cleared over the foil once years ago and just did not like the look. Another option if you're airbrushing is the water based polyurethanes. Been using it for years, either Carver Tripp or Minwax. I thin it with windshield washer solvent. Usually goes on dead smooth but will color sand beautifully if needed. Best thing is a quart is around 11 bucks at Lowes and will last for years with proper care -
Ford 427 FE vs 428 FT -- differences?

427 and 428 are from FE family. 429 is the 385 series that replaced them, eventually grew to the 460. 430 from MEL family that was exclusive to Mercury, Edsel and Lincoln. Totally different animal from the FE, more like an overgrown Yblock. All the FE's look pretty much the same in scale. -
Polishing Testors acrylic clear???
jeffbrad replied to crowe-t's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Like Joe said, all of the good acrylics polish out beautifully. I've used Minwax gloss water base polyurethane for years. A quart at Lowe's is 11 bucks and will last you years. Cut it with windshield washer fluid if needed. If you spray light thin coats it will usually go on dead smooth. If not I'll usually hit it with 2000 grit then Meguiars 3 and wax. Novus 2 is a good substitute for the Meguiars. -
Testors bottle paint issues
jeffbrad replied to Travis T's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I drop a couple bb's in a bottle when I first open it. easier than stirring, works great on the Humbrol tins too. Just be sure to use stainless in acrylics. don't ask how I know -
Watch Cuban Chrome, they're all over Cuba.

Kissimmee Fl had 60 and 63 Chevy kits for 5.99. Others like 55 Chevy and 49 Merc were 11.99 or 14.99. Had to hunt for them, they were in a shopping cart in clearance aisle
-
Thanks guys. Picked up the custom kit recently with a HL coupon for the tires and engine. I have a stock version but want it lowered so will use the parts from custom kit. I'm going to use the custom engine in a hydro boat that will go behind the Olds. That engine should look great in that boat. Olds engines were real popular in boats where I grew up in 50's and 60's
-
Anybody tell me if the suspension in the 50 Olds custom is already lowered?
-
4-71 or 6v53 but they were rare in those trucks. I,ve also seen the 3208 Cats in them but most had either 350 small blocks or 366 0r 427 big blocks
-
Aren't they basically the same from 63 up? I know the 292 has a taller deck. The trumpeter Nova and some of the early AMT chevelles had 194 for the Nova and 230 for the Chevelle.

Welcome. Kissimmee here

Americana Gloss Sealer/Finisher
jeffbrad replied to aurfalien's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Another clear that I have not seen mentioned on this board is the water based polyurethanes. I used it a lot and always had good results. Dries hard and fast and can be sanded and polished if needed. Carver Tripp is what I used Thinned with windshield washer fluid. -
Never done the Penske kit but have built the other 3 and all are good kits. No problems with any of them
