Ollie's strike again
Tom Geiger replied to GLMFAA1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Ollies currently has 345 stores. I think it makes more sense that Round 2 produced the kits to order for them. No different than when Model King would order a run of 2500 kits, but a bit less sophisticated.. more like "we need 10 different car kits" and Round 2 got to pick slow movers that wouldn't interfere with their normal distribution channels. -
If you have the Walmart App on your phone (which I do for their pharmacy), there is a price scanner as part of it. You can scan any bar code and it will tell you the price at your store. I've used it in the store a couple of times.

Not the best of business men there! LOL And still a lot of work for $10 profit. -

Interesting! Sounds like Round 2 did a special run of less desirable kits for Ollies, rather than selling them overstock. -
How were the prices? Walmart does regional campaigns so I don't expect to see anything here in Pennsylvania

Which is why I take a lot of pictures as I build. I see my flaws in some of them, and when I post photos, people will advise me too! It's all good when done as I'm working and can correct the issues! -
Hermann, it's not that we are or are not into Japanese trucks, nobody can deny that you are a master of scratch building. It's great that you took photos along your way and posted them in order! Anyone who wants to scratch build from flat sheet stock needs to review this thread. A long time ago a fellow named Joe Cavorley told me that you can build anything if you break it down to a series of shapes. You certainly prove that right! Build on!

I wouldn't say there were like 24 people who wanted to build a MountNGoat... more like some eBay or flea market seller now has 24 MountNGoats in stock! ? -
Are the MPC 1978 Dodge trucks at HL?
Tom Geiger replied to GMP440's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Remember that Round 2 underestimated the sales potential of this kit and the first shipment was sold out. I don't know if they got a second shipment or where they are with it today.... I've never seen this kit at HL -

I can just see it now... the kit gets done and people on this board will be complaining about the shape of the valve covers! -

Ha! There are a lot of Weinermobile toys out there. Not 1/25 scale, but different size toys. Check eBay and a load of stuff pops up -

I've posted this before but it bears repeating... I had a conversation with a manager at my local HL in Exton, PA. He said the same guy comes in nearly every day and if there are any model kits on sale, he will buy them all. He said Amazon has an app where people can scan a bar code on any item and it will show what that item is selling for on Amazon. He sees people looking to resell using this in the store. -

My local store in Exton, PA?? Nothin'! I was there yesterday afternoon, nothing on sale. So I used my magic coupon on a can of Tamiya white primer that I need for a current project. -

When I was 5-6-7 I was a big fan of Matchbox cars and probably had never seen a model. Then we moved to Izmir, Turkey where I can guarantee you there were no models for sale. My earliest recollection of a model car was in1967 when I was 9. My father had a model of a Studebaker Avanti that he pulled out to use as a template to build my Pinewood Derby car as an Avanti. And I don’t recall what happened to the model. We returned to the USA for a year in 1968 and that’s when I got into model cars at age 10. -
Not really irked, more sad. My wife and I go to the same pub for Happy Hour specials at least once a week. It's pretty much our "Cheers". The bartenders know us, what we drink and what we normally order for food. It's a friendly place with many regulars we talk to on a regular basis. Recently my wife mentioned that we hadn't seen Phil in a while. I was hoping we'd ask the bartender and he'd say Phil was coming in on different nights than we were. When I asked, I found out that Phil had passed away. We weren't close to him, in fact we didn't even know his last name until I Googled for his obituary. We did know he was never married and lived in a condo alone. He had a red Audi. He was a Viet Nam vet who continued to serve in the reserves until his retirement. He was a retired bank manager. He'd talk about playing golf. Overall a good natured guy we liked to see at the pub. So we are sad to learn about his passing.

There was a guy in our club who was probably the most talented modeler I knew at the time. Before computer graphics, he would hand paint his, including intricate little things like scripts perfectly. But when you looked at his final model there were rookie imperfections, mainly in the final details. He was finished with the model mentally and rushed the last details to get it off his bench. The rest of us felt like we were cheated since the model could've been near perfection! Unfortunately he passed away a couple of years ago. -

Or the five year old kid who wins the Junior Class at a show with a perfectly built, air brushed -- clear coated -- polished model! Which matches his father's building skills? ? -
Nice little Porsche! Great work!

And we are up on wheels as of last evening! It sits well and I'm happy with it. The body and radiator shell are just sitting on it for the photo. I can tell you that the parts in the recent Blue Bandito kit were retooled because they don't play well with parts from the original issue kit. I had to use the new kit axles since my originals were destroyed, and the mount points on the old wheels are different. I do have the old wheels on the back, but gave up and used the new kit wheels on the front. The tires are old originals and I painted the white inserts since they were messy. One set of carbs still need to be put on. And I will start over with two pairs of seats, hoping to get two usable ones in the process. The seats are tiny and should be white and red two tone. The color separation lines are faint and very hard to mask, resulting in my current issues. Otherwise this one is ready to button up.

Which is why I pretty much sand off all kit provided locator pins and sand the engine halves until I'm sure the mating surfaces are flat. Some of them are rounded from the molding process. I also sand off locator pins for things like mirrors and engine accessories. I drill all these out and assemble with bits of straight pin once I have flattened out the mounting surfaces. As far as ejector pins and mold lines on parts, try an early Revell kit like the Surfite! That kit had horrible pin and mold lines on all the spindly chrome suspension pieces. I built mine way before Alclad, so I had stripped them all and painted them with Testors Metalizers. And the AMT '59 El Camino interior has huge ejector pin marks right on the patterned seat surface! It is getting much better with new kits. The fact that they are designed on CAD allows for much better placement of parts on the trees, allowing the designers to hide the pins and lessen the seams.
