A Great Corvette Collection
Tom Geiger replied to slusher's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I understand his all black theme, I remember seeing a sports car collection on Cape Cod that had all red cars. Still, I'd want to have the variety of colors offered over the years. Some of those cars are breathtaking in other colors! -
Making A Small Sanding Block!
Tom Geiger replied to goodguyinar416's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I remember those from my drafting days.. Mars is a German drafting supply company, "Radier" means to rub out, and "Gumi" actually "Gummi" is rubber. You know those Gummy Bears? Americans renamed the product here, they are actually called "Gummi Baren" in Germany... Rubber Bears. -
Last evening when I was weeding my garden areas to mulch them, I noticed how the wild strawberries had spread. The fruit is colorful but never gets big enough to harvest and eat. Still, they're cool so I will keep 'em and mulch around them!

About ten years ago I pulled my 1973 Peugeot Tour De France off the garage ceiling and decided to take up riding again. I was surprised at how much traffic had increased in the suburbs of Central New Jersey! I felt like I was going to get run over much of the time. Traffic had either increased, or I hadn't been as aware of it back when I was a 16 year old rider! Now I'm in PA and there are a bunch of dedicated bike trails so I plan on pulling the old Peugeot out again! Good luck with your trike!

1951 Chevy Wanderer - Minor Progress - 8/3/2013
Tom Geiger replied to Tom Geiger's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Today's update without photos... Last evening I played a bit and assembled the suspension. Cool kit in that it includes different suspension height options. I used the extension blocks on the rear to raise it high. The front end comes with two sets of spindles. There are the stock ones and a pair that can be used to either raise or lower the nose, depending on which way you flip them. Of course I've set everything way high! I left it with the glue drying, so I'll have to pop four of those big Suburbanite snow tires on it to see what we've got! Once on wheels, I will be doing the unexciting work of making the body sit right on the chassis and fitting the underside of the pickup box and camper into it. Already I can see a lot of empty space under the pickup box, and seeing that the interior is less than a scale 5 foot deep, I will be carving out the bottom of the pickup box to give it some depth. And yes I will do another cool camper interior! -
The one that got away.
Tom Geiger replied to Evilbenny's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That's how I finally got my Jaguar! I loved the style of the Jaguar S Type from the moment I saw it back when they were new.. Just that classic Jag look! I finally got the bug three years ago and kept my eye out on eBay and Craig's List for a nice one. I finally came across this one at a Bentley/Rolls dealer on eBay. It was a 2000 V8 car, and absolutely gorgeous with 24,000 on it. I called and was told it was already sold. (the getting away part) So I went about life and forgot about it. A few weeks later I saw the same car on Craig's List so I called and asked what was up. The salesman was apologetic and said it had been sold but the party could not get their financing approved. He agreed to hold it for me until Saturday (this was Wednesday and I was coming to NJ from PA). I got there and it was everything I could hope for. They wanted $15,000 but accepted $10,500 cash. Some folks will whine that Jaguars are nothing but trouble, but I haven't had a dimes worth of trouble in 3 years. Okay, 15 cents worth... I replaced a fuse! -
Out Of Production Resin & Aftermarket Products
Tom Geiger replied to Casey's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Well start building then... I have a truck I'd like to build myself. I keep procrastinating hoping someone will do the conversion and sell it as a resin. Of course that will only happen once I do the work. -
Older kits
Tom Geiger replied to chevyfever2009's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It's all supply and demand. And it's seasonal too. Less people buying in the warm weather, so you can score a deal. A lot of us are getting older and deciding to thin out our collections. So they wind up on the 'bay. With the volume of kits listed there, you don't want to sell your $5 and $10 kits. There's like 50 of that kit listed so it's only going to sell for opening bid if at all. But the truly rare stuff will still bring good money. I just went through 20 pages and didn't see many really good kits, so when they appear, they get bid up. -
1951 Chevy Wanderer - Minor Progress - 8/3/2013
Tom Geiger replied to Tom Geiger's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I had a bit of free time this afternoon so I pulled the '51 Chevy back onto the workbench. It had been packed up so that I could do a quick build of the Rusty Corvette. Anyway, on our last visit, I was upset that the camper really didn't look right from the back. I dug out a badly built camper shell from my parts box, stripped the angry green paint from it and used it for parts to move this project forward. The camper I got from Rich Manson is the brownish plastic and the parts one is the white. I added some serious depth to the back by combining both back panels. Then I found sections of the parts piece side panels that would match the sides to make the drop down. Here's what I started with. The El Camino camper doesn't come down far enough and doesn't match up with the pickup bed on the sides. I think I've matched it up much better at this point. It's all glued and now I need to work it in so it looks right. I think I've changed the characteristics of that El Camino camper to fit the project. And it's onward from here... -
I have 10 yards of mulch if that qualifies me as a gardener! I've mulched all the beds around the house but planting anything here is just feeding the deer!

"Crusty" 41 chevy
Tom Geiger replied to gonzo64nova's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Very well done. I'm super critical on beaters and worn vehicles, but you did your homework and got your details correct. I especially like the torn fender, the strategic dent on the roof and the absolutely correct rust pattern for that vehicle. Kudos! -
We're Back! How much modeling did you get done?
Tom Geiger replied to Danno's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I wore out my mouse hitting REFRESH! REFRESH! over and over until it finally came back! -
Anne, one of the aftermarket companies makes / did make a steering wheel with a wooden rim, already formed round. As someone else here said, the steering wheel on a 1:1 Corvette was plastic with wood grain on it. The kit wheel you already did a great job on is good 'enuf for me!

Very cool. It has the 'gotcha!' factor. You may mail it to me if you like. I will take very good care of it!

More on the Uncertain Tee
Tom Geiger replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That's downright silly since the Revell of those days is not the Revell of today. It's changed hands many times and it's a completely different company today. Steve would be doing himself right to allow Revell to redo the kit. In fact, with Round 2 still just reissuing old kits, Revell is the only game in town. From what I saw, he's stuck in the past, still trying to wring a living out of something he did 40 years ago. -
Don't you just hate when....
Tom Geiger replied to CJ1971's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Maybe it's Karma? Hope the poor little rich boy got out okay. But no worries, daddy will get him another super car! -
Superb! And you build pretty darn fast too! You have that eye to detail that makes your cars look great and each one a bit unique. I love the bicycle fenders on the front on this one. The color makes it stand out too. Did you design and make those decals?

Ron that F&F wagon was originally a John Heyer piece (that's the version I have) and was part of the sale of that business from Heyer to Ed Fluck. And what did I get today? Monday I stopped by my local hobby shop for some Evergreen clear sheets (they were out of them!) and picked up the new issue of Model Cars. Great issue! I skimmed it but haven't had the time to sit down and really read the articles just yet. I love the magazine especially since I know some of the authors and can hear their voices as I read the articles!

I'd prefer to build it with bass wood. It's a bit harder and won't warp over the years. Everything I built with balsa back in the day has misformed as it aged.

31 Nash: way beyond "Rat Fiink" Coupe: new project 5/9/13

That was my first thought. Just the day before I was going through the Plastruct rack at my local hobby shop, thinking that there had to be a use for some of the patterns! -
A serious question about posting factual information
Tom Geiger replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I once had a girlfriend die of a head injury. I yelled "DUCK!" and she jumped up to see the duck. -
Jury duty is actually very interesting, IF you have a job that will pay you your regular salary while you are serving! I've served three times and got on two interesting cases.

I read on the Internet that 67.5% of all statistics are just made up anyway!
