I have no problem with teamwork, nor do I with team orders. If I'm in third and I want to give that position to a teammate or anyone else, I earned that position and should be able to do it. But intentionally spinning out is another thing. I do think that is serious and is worthy of a strong penalty. What MWR did was a disgrace. I was very happy to hear NAPA left and I'd lose no sleep if the organization never recovered.

I do, occasionally at least. Last week, my local HobbyTown had a 1/32 Tamiya Phantom for $149. I found it on ebay for 116, shipping included. I told the manager this and he have me 10 bucks off, and I bought it. Why? Because the guys in there help me all the time with my modeling questions and I feel I owe it to them to occasionally pay retail prices.

I'm a huge Nascar fan. I have my favorites and those I can't stand. But this plays no role in what I buy. My favorite driver is Kenseth sponsored by Home Depot. My least favorite driver is Jimmie Johnson sponsored by Lowes. If the Lowes is closer or has the same item for less, that's where I'll shop.

Model car parts on eBay
brad4321 replied to afxmustang's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I strongly, no STRONLY disagree with anyone who says the seller is doing anything immoral, shady, unethical, etc, etc. A seller wants to get as much as possible for an item and a buyer wants to pay as little for it. Somewhere in the middle, there is hopefully agreement, and that is the price. I will sell you a penny for a nickel if you're willing to pay it. And if the guy over there is willing to pay a dime, I'll sell it to him. -
Detailing & Why
brad4321 replied to MoparWoman Jamie's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I used to sweat detail. I would have to have every aftermarket set for each kit I built. Now, I rarely get the extra tidbits. A well executed model trumps detail. I hate seeing a model that has wonderful details and also seeing seams not perfectly cleaned up or other little flaws. A perfectly executed model out of the box to me always looks more impressive than a fairly well executed model with high detail. Detail can make a great model greater, but not a mediocre model great IMO. -
I finally did it...... EBay First-timer

There is no better place to model shop. You can find some great prices if you're a little patient. -
How often do you visit Hobby Lobby?
brad4321 replied to dantewallace's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The existence of Hobby Lobby and the 40 off coupon has either been a wonderful thing or awful thing for me. I have one about 5 minutes away and my girlfriend loves to go for scrapbooking goodies. And there I am on the hobby aisle realizing I can get this or that get for next to nothing. So I end up getting like a kit a week it seems. It's absurd. You should see me on that model aisle looking up kit reviews in preparation for a sound purchasing decision. -
I will spend a lot if I REALLY want to build something. I have some 1/32 jets that cost almost 200 bucks. But those things take many many hours. The price per hour spent becomes very little. How many fun things can you do in this world that is 1 dollar for an hour? As I've become a better modeler, I find myself buying less and less aftermarket goodies. I realized a few years ago that clean execution and FINISHING a model are worth way more than extra detail. So that paradigm shift has saved me some dough.

Are You a "One & Done" Builder?
brad4321 replied to Casey's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There are far too many models that I want to build that I will never have time for to consider doing one model twice. -
Nascar, ya like the new car?
brad4321 replied to rel14's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If I had to complain about Nascar, the car would not be on my short list of things to rant about. I have hated every rules change that has been made over the past 10 years. Nascar was doing great 10 years ago and the stands were full. But then they tried to spice things up and in the process dumbed down the sport one stupid rule after another. Fabricated entertainment is not entertaining. The Chase, Lucky Dog, Green-White-Checker finishes, double wide restarts - all stupid IMO. But at the end of the day, I'm a huge Nascar fan. Now however, Formula 1 and NHRA are right there at the top of my list of favorite sports. -
Nascar, ya like the new car?
brad4321 replied to rel14's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I thought the COT was a better looking race car than the one it replaced, especially when the spoiler came back and the original splitter was replaced. And this car is in turn much better looking than the COT. Excited to finally see some racing again - even though Daytona and plate racing is awful to watch. -
How is this kit? I can't find a review, an instruction sheet, anything about what's inside, or how good it is. I want to buy it, but.......
-
The box art only helps me decide if I don't know whats in the inside. If I've done my homework or owned the kit before, the box could be solid white for all I care. Otherwise, the picture can certainly stir my interests and force me into an impulse buy. What I don't understand is why so many models fail to properly show off what is inside. Often there are decals for versions inside that aren't show on the outside. Often the completed model photos on the side look like an average at best modeler built the thing. Some of the foreign companies just give you a drawing on the front and not one picture or mention of what's inside. If they're hiding something bad, I can understand. But often there are goodies inside that had I known about I would've snagged one up much much sooner.

This is SO true of me too. It's so fun to start a kit. But finishing one seems like torture. When you're first looking thru the parts, your dreams are large and no degree of hard work is too much for THIS kit. Then 72 hours later, you see that a part needs to be repainted, and it's back in the box so you can start a new project. I wish I could purchase a kit and work on just that kit til finished. Then repeat.

Stacey David's Rat Roaster by : REVELL
brad4321 replied to Greg Myers's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I have very little interest in this subject. But I had to have one for some reason. I like to go outside my box sometimes. I'm enjoying the build. It's typical Revell quality or lack thereof. Include me in the group of people that would never notice the innaccuracies. I do hate the wheels. They require a lot of force to get inside the tire and the process of doing so means you can't paint a whitewall or dullcote the tires. The chrome trees are junk but that's typical. Most parts have to be stipped, sanded, and repainted, unless you want crappy looking marks on the parts. -
I've spent my entire life in golf. I've played at basically every level competitively. In college, I could stay out til 3am, get up the next morning and shoot 68 with a category 10 hangover. Now if I did that, I'd have to have 48 hours of nothing but sofa time to recover. And I've noticed at night in bed that flipping thru a model magazine often sounds better than a roll in the hay with the girlfiend.

As a modeler, I don't limit myself to just cars. I would lose interest quick. I will build planes, jets, tanks, and boats from all eras. And lately, I've caught the model railroading bug. Every type of subject has tasks I love and hate. So if I didn't go from one to another, I'd get stale. So to answer the question, I can kill time here, or missing-lynx.com, or armorama.com, or aircraftresourcecenter.com, or modelrailroader.com, etc.

When I started the topic, I knew "habit" wasn't exactly the best word. They do say, if you're having fun, you're doing it right! I was curious if others like myself took short cuts and if so, which ones. Sounds like I'm not alone. And onions and tomatoes are best when in the garbage. :0) Yuck.
-
Amen. I don't think anyone has ever seen any of my hundreds of models. Never entered one in a contest. Never posted photos here or elsewhere. None of friends do it. I'm not in a club. My rule of thumb on hidden details is this - if you can put the finished model in your hand and get a angle from anywhere to view it, I'll consider adding the extra details. But as my modeling skills have advanced and evolved, I've found I'm less worried about details and more concerned with clean and well executed builds.
-
I'm the exact exact opposite. I hate doing the bodies, so I have completed engines and chassis and wheels with no bodies to put over them. The bodies - the hate of chrome foil and getting perfect gloss finishes is why I build mostly tanks and planes.
-
What are some good modeling habits or procedures that you often break? Like, I rarely wash or prime my parts (other than the body). Sometimes I prime and paint right over chrome plated parts. I start 10 projects for each one I finish. Where do you consistently fall short of diligence?

In the world of cars, there is nothing sexier than Formula 1 cars, in my opinion. (Pro Mods would be my runner up.) It doesn't matter what era we're talking about, F1 cars are simply gorgeous. Everything F1 is gorgeous, and thats just one reason it is my favorite sport. As far as this car goes, I guess I'm happy the stepped nose is gone, though it never bothered me as much as others. I dont love the livery. I'd rather see a brighter red and no black or white strip.
