1/16 MPC Nascar Petty Charger; a kit change just announced
brad4321 replied to '70 Grande's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I'm about 90% done with this kit. Tons of flash, and your knuckles end up raw from the endless puttying and sanding. But what a fun fun kit. The work is very rewarding. So I have a question. How are people executing this 3 color scheme? The best advice I've seen is to paint the entire body white. Then mask the white line and paint the blue and red. I think this will work but there are some sharp curves that are tough to lay down. Is there a masking product that will take such a sharp turn? Ot do people have a better idea? -
Johnny - Great story. The ending is sad but the tale is a happy one. You gave a kitten with no future a fantastic 18 months.

AMT Ohio George`s '33 Willys Malco Gasser
brad4321 replied to rssschris's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I picked this up yesterday. The box was too gorgeous to put down. Inside you'll find about what you expect. Lots of flash, and IMO a poor looking chrome tree. Almost all of that will have to be stripped, cleaned up, and repainted. After opening it, I regretted buying it. Had I paid 10 dollars less, I'd be quite happy. All that having been said, it's a beautiful car and I look forward to building it. Does anyone make that blue color? -
1/16 MPC Nascar Petty Charger; a kit change just announced
brad4321 replied to '70 Grande's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I don't why so many are sweating the non clear body. Tamiya and other companies make a great clear paint. Easy. But seriously, I would never build a model with a clear body. Unless the actual car had a clear body. But doing so would eliminate having to sweat the intimidating blue/red paint scheme. I dread building this kit, but I'm going to have to. *sigh* It's maybe the prettiest Nascar car of all time. I can't not build it. -
These get great reviews. They go on great with a brush. But I'm struggling to airbrush them. Looks like some people thin and some don't. Most seem to say that they are airbrush ready right out of the bottle. But I'm having no luck. The most common problem is after about 30 seconds of airbrushing my airbrush gets clogged. I have no problem airbrushing other brand acrylics. Am I doing something wrong or should I just thin them?

I love this thread. I love seeing that I'm not the only addict. I love seeing that my stash, though too big, isn't as big as others. I love looking thru the collections and seeing kits I didn't know existed, and wishing that kit was hidden away never to be finished in my collection. And I'd love to go shopping in some of you guy's houses.

why do some people insist on details?
brad4321 replied to meaneyme's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
To people not in the hobby or new to the hobby, the level of detail is what is impressive. Oh boy, look there is a little cd stuck in the cd player! Oh boy, there is a pair of dice hanging from the rear view mirror! These things are perfectly fine and do add to the model - if executed well. But many of us have come to learn the real skill of model building is elsewhere. It's been said a million times, but what's important is having fun. If you enjoy the finished product, then it's a success. My first first models were absolutely awful. But at that time I was way more proud of what I had done. I wanted to show those models off. Now that my models are pretty good, I'm almost embarrassed by them. Well, the paint isn't absolutely perfect. Or some other minor imperfection makes you hate the whole thing. You think you've done something great until you see that some guy out there in another state has done something more amazing than you can imagine. And all of a sudden your very good model looks pretty ordinary. For you golfers out there I'll make a comparison. I am a professional. (Not on the tour, but in the business) I see a lot of golfers who are scratch players or mid 70's players, and think they are hot stuff because they beat all their friends. But those of us that can really play are generally a humble bunch because we only compare ourselves to the best players in the world. If I go out and shoot 69, I guarantee I had no more enjoyment (if anything less) than the guy who shot 92. When I analyze my round, I will only think about the little mistakes. The guy who shoots 92 will proudly remember the 5 fantastic shots he hit. -
What we do for our hobby...
brad4321 replied to Vince Nemanic's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Trust me. No offense taken. I loved it. I emailed it immediately to my girlfriend and she had a good laugh too. I know I shouldn't be embarrassed by my hobbies. I have a huge telescope. I love to play chess. Right now, I'm building a big model train layout. I have models in various stages of completion around the living room and spare bedroom. Whenever company is coming over, I hide every tiny bit of evidence of it. For me, it's a solitary hobby. And that's why I hang out here. You guys are my only modeling friends. -

Of course by "make" I mean politely ask. Then she rolls her eyes and helps me out. -

Ha! That is funny! Yeah, maybe I do need some new friends. But in their defense, they don't know about my hobbies so they've never had the chance to laugh at me. But I know they would. And that's fine. I laugh at them too. -

If I need an item from the jewelry making section or dollhouse section, I always make my girlfriend pretend like she is one who needs to roam the aisle. And then I give her money to make the purchase. Drives her nuts. I shouldn't be embarrassed. But I am. In fact, I've never told one single friend that I build models. All my guy friends would never let me live that down. -
Just when you think you've seen it all
brad4321 replied to slusher's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think most of what any of us choose to do will have others asking why?! Plenty of people have all asked me what the heck is the point of building a model. Or playing golf. I ask others whats the point of fishing when they sell fish already caught and cleaned in every grocery store. That having been said, all those vehicles are ugly... in my opinion. -
I don't see how sniping could ever be viewed negatively. The auction last x number of days or hours, ending precisely at y o'clock. The person making the highest bid in that time period gets the item. It's that simple, and there should never be a hard feeling, win or lose.

I am a golfer. I started playing around age 11 and broke 70 by age 14. It paid my way through college and I tried to play on Tour. I wasn't quite good enough so now I work in the golf business. Golf is easy. Laying down a perfect gloss finish? Now, that's tough.

Tamiya is great of course. Nice drawings and no confusion as to what portion of each part gets painted. Trumpeter has really nice drawings, but often don't mention the color of parts. The worst has to be with many resin "kits". Many of these have no instructions at all. Zero. So no instructions has to be the worst. And of the "kits" that did attempt instructions, the Ross Gibson engines are the worst.

I understand what it is... but what is happening? And why would they produce parts in red plastic and then expect us to paint it white?
-
I can't stand not watching them live. I always set my alarm and suck it up and watch live. I couldn't sleep knowing that F1 is happening!
-
Oh geez. That sounds like bad news for us F1 fans. What are the odds NBC shows the races live? or qualifying and practice at all?

A trick that is used on old airplanes is airbrushing flat mixed with a little white. -
How to stop model building burn out?
brad4321 replied to greymack's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
First, I remind myself I do it for fun. If it feels like work, I stop. If I have no interest in a current project, it goes off to the side for a bit. I almost always desire to return to it eventually. And most importantly, I don't limit myself to one genre. I will build planes and jets and cars and tanks of all kinds and in all scales. -
You have no idea what I like and don't like. I like many forms of motorsport and Nascar is not my favorite of them. I've been thinking for some time that a merger would be great to see.

That seems like a very good decision to me.
