Thanks Nigel. This was an 'already started' and as I say above not particularly well! The other versions I've seen are in white but with totally different decals, would that be the Monogram version?

I finished off this 1979 kit, the Airfix Triumph TR7. Bought a few months ago as an 'already started' and damaged! it came in red plastic so I cleaned it up and gave it three coats of matt white, then gloss to stop the red bleeding through. Saved the decals with two coats of plasti-kote clear gloss enamel.

Thanks Kurt. But Airfix only made this once in 1979, it was never updated. Really odd!

Thanks guys. When I was a rally marshal in the day I remember these with both the 2 litre four cylinder and the 3.5 litre V8. I also remember Tony Pond driving one of the V8's on stages that I worked on! Noisy and Lary the rear end sliding in all directions on the bends!

Produced in 1979 this kit I bought as an already started a few months ago. The instructions were yellowed instead of white, the decals had to have two coats of clear gloss enamel to save them and the kit had been started badly. It came in red plastic but the surface was bad so after research I painted it gloss white after three coats of white undercoat/matt, to stop the Red bleeding through. Although the white versions in the day had different markings I trimmed up the standard ones and kept my fingers crossed that they came out OK! You'll notice that I'm shaky round window rubbers and the front orange indicators (shaky hands). The original box art, although mine was damaged. The steering was broken so I used small alloy tube to correct it.

Thanks guys. Yes an interesting build with all the parts in mixed bags! I have the camper too, my wife bought it for a Christmas present a few years ago. The LEGO store is in a mall where the owner INTU has gone into administration, various large retail chain stores have already gone, so I got in there and bought this with some Christmas gift cards. I saw the Ducati kit as well, but now it seems to have sold out across the UK!

Although a large LEGO kit, to me it's still a kit. 16" long X 7" wide X 8" high. with 2573 parts. Opening doors (all three) pistons that go up and down, 4 wheel drive, steering either from cab or roof, opening top and side containers and folding side ladder. Time taken based on 3-4 hours per day, 5 days per week equals three weeks in all. Excuse my hand/camera shadow! In it's temporary position on the shelves in the cabin, until I find a place behind glass that's big enough to take it! OH and when you open the box within a box your faced with 25 bags of mixed parts!

It looks very good, despite the decals. I've just used SlotFabrik that are made mainly for slot cars but in 1/24th scale. They are the opposite to yours, very thin, curl up from the paper to the model surface, need microsol, and plenty of it, and tweezers to stretch out etc. You've got a super build there!

Fix the windscreen surround first then decal. Why? I've decaled onto both gloss and matt paint. If it's a rally car with the works Subaru colours they will show up very well. Be careful that they are in good condition or they will fall apart in the water! I always spray at least two coats of clear gloss onto old decals (drying for a few hours between coats) then cafefully cutting around the decals closely before dipping into warm water and laying up. These are laid up on a matt black paint finish.
