  1. Thanks to some helpful friends I have Mark's email, phone, & address, so he can get his decklid back Not only that, but Mark is the one who met Hank Borger recently at a local club in Florida and brought him up to the ACME NNL; his first major model car show in years! It was great to meet a living legend and see his work up close, and see him goofing around w/Bill Coulter, and I've got pictures to prove it!
  2. Thanks, & trust me...not a problem at all...I'm a designer, I have to be able to take the same critique that I can dish out! A lot of people think any criticism is wrong. I just see it as a way to make things as right as possible...like when I point out things on a new kit (hi, Bill ) it's not to beat up on them, but input that I would personally like to hear if I were the one developing the new product. Anyway...I'll figure something out because we're definitely on the same page about the multiplicity of fuel caps. Thankfully I was able to laugh at it when I first saw it (as I was gluing on the Mustang emblem). At that point it was lucky that the car hadn't been crushed when I had the horrific paint mishaps
  3. Russel, it was a great pleasure meeting you, and it's comments like this that keep us all running to make each show even better than the last BTW, I forgot to mention...I found my missing (and I thought permanently) Cayman GT (says "GT") and GT3 RS decal file last week, & have access to Wayne's Alps printer. You still want decals?
  4. Thanks; it was too late in the build to change it when I realized what was going on w/the dueling gas caps. One suggestion from the show that sounded good was painting the Camaro gas cap on the fender flat black and toning down the Mustang faux-cap on the back w/a black wash or black painted inset detail. In hindsight I should have filled the rear fender cap or done a different emblem on the Mustang tailpanel. But I really like the Camaro cap detail, and not sure what I'd put in the center of the Mustang taillight panel that's different but "natural". We shall see...
  5. While cleaning up we found a separate decklid for a full-size '62 Chevrolet, looks Biscayne? It's baby blue w/the lock drilled, two pin holes drilled and a larger offset hole drilled out. P/M me if you are the owner or know who it belongs to! Thanks! I found a photo of the gentleman who I think built it; he introduced himself on Saturday, I can't remember his name (CRS...a wonderful thing...not!), anyway, here's a photo of him w/the model (it's definitely the decklid that was left behind):
  6. Thanks! I was adjusting the white balance on my camera and spied the B&W option while I was in the menu so decided to try it out for the first shot. I wouldn't have painted this car silver as it's boring for a pony car
  7. WIP photos here This model was a whole lot of fun up until Tuesday when attempting a very minor repair my airbrush spilled satin clear lacquer over the roof, hood, header panel, windshield and front fender of the model moments before completion It had to be taken back apart, body completely stripped of detail parts and refinished; amazingly the glass was completely unharmed, the polish must have protected it as it buffed out perfectly. Refinishing included a bout with fisheyes. And four repaints of the roof alone due to problems with me, the paint, and bad karma, I guess. It was finished up Friday morning, lightning didn't strike it on the way to the show, and it attracted a good bit of attention this weekend; my humor returned after feeling like I'd give up the hobby for good after goofing it up so badly . I'd love to see this thing as a 1:1 concept at SEMA...the car companies would all have a conniption I love doing stuff like this; it's fun seeing people's reactions...both good and bad-I tend to like provocative designs (that doesn't mean Aztek, by the way ). I love how it came out, but I'm sure there are people that might have a lot less favorable reaction, and that's okay too. Hit me w/any questions/comments! Photos Here
  8. Photos Here We had what looked like a record attendance and a near-record turnout of 647 models entered into the show! Thanks to everyone who made this another outstanding show; from club members to our guests, many who traveled great distances to enjoy the weekend with us. Thanks to Gregg for attending and taking some fantastic photos for the magazine. There was a record turnout of junior modelers this year and also for kids in the make 'n take "build a '57 Chevrolet" in the Jonquil room. The kids were all having a blast. Everyone commented on the astoundingly high quality of models throughout the show; the show is blessed to attract the best of the best and it's clear that Atlanta is one of the must-attend shows of the year and it continues to grow, the crowds around the tables were thick. Ours is a modified NNL, with a few more awards than the traditional NNL Nationals in Toledo and the NNL East in New Jersey. This years winners: Ken Mosezar Best In Show: Clay Kemp/Superman Returns #24 Monte Carlo Best Junior: KC Ledford/'69 Nova Augie Hiscano award: Dirk Joseph/Chevrolet Cameo PU Lee Baker memorial award: Kason Wang "Go RV'ing" motorhome Retro in the Metro Theme: Dirk Joseph/Concept Camaro Daytona Speedweeks Theme: Jay Savarese/'99 Goodwrench C5R Internet Theme/Drag Racers: Darryl Raper '58 Plymouth MTI Racing Best Camaro: Dirk Joseph/Concept Camaro MTI Racing Best Corvette: Jay Savarese/'99 Goodwrench C5R Top Ten: Garland Farris III/'66 GTO Top Ten: Ron Royston/Pop's Texaco Diorama Top Ten: Gary McCulloch/'56 Ford Convertible Top Ten: Billy Youngman/Silk Cut Jaguar Top Ten: Chip Rymer/'64 Chevy PU Top Ten: Jerel Wolfe/'37 Ford & Drag Boat Top Ten: Chris Hooker/'69 Nova Top Ten: Mike Alvarez/'07 Pioneer Stallion Mustang Top Ten: Rodney Jefferson/'62 Impala CV L-R Mike Lawrence aka GTMike400, Brian Venable, Eric Cole, Russell Wells aka 69*Goat who drove to Atlanta from Houston. ACME Treasurer/Show Chairman Paul Wehner discussing important business w/"The Prez" Henry Trent & ACME member Earl Miller. MC & Gregg's Chauffeur Wes Hofferber. Front desk helpers Paul Grala, Paul Wehner, and Harold Sullins. The Make-'n-Take was a big hit this year, so popular we ran out of models. The future of the hobby; a record number of 19 junior entrants this year, more than double 2008. Modeling is serious business, as Brian Venable & Chip Wamsley can attest to. Gary McCulloch from Charleston, SC was probably the happiest guy in the community center; his first trip to the Atlanta NNL and he not only met some of his modeling heroes this weekend like Hank Borger, Bill Coulter & Bob Shelton, he won one of the coveted Top Ten awards for his incredibly detailed replica '56 Ford CV model. Dirk Joseph cleaned house, winning "Best Camaro" and "Best Retro in the Metro" with his Jada Camaro concept car, & also winning the "Augie Hiscano" award for his Chevy Cameo truck. No show would be complete without a big win by Clay Kemp, who won Best In Show (the top vote getter of the top ten) this year with his #24 Superman Returns Monte Carlo.
  9. Gregg, thanks for the great photos and for again helping to make our show one of the very best. Hope your back feels better, and thanks for the T-shirt
  10. The Mustang gets to take the honor because it was so attractive & newsworthy it captured the hearts of Americans & spawned an entire class of cars, including the anything-but-attractive knee-jerk-reaction known as the 1st generation Barracuda. The second & third generation Barracudas were attractive, but the Mustang is the original since it had an all-new body rather than just a tacked-on fastback.
  11. MiniExotics/R&D Unique has gone under. It was announced this week on another forum. Lost workspace, divorce, etc. Motor City resins are very nice.
  12. Most of the time "view new posts" is all I need to keep up; I open particular sub-forums only when I'm looking for something in particular or if I've been away for a few days.
  13. Look up & to the right (to the left will be the title of the thread) and find the button for "options". Click "options" Choose (under "display modes") Standard That should get the board back the way it should be.
  14. Yes, that is too bad Does look like a decent kit otherwise.
  15. I couldn't say it any better myself. Nice work
  16. That's too cool! Gives me ideas for our club's VW theme for our 2010 show
  17. Wow, this is a great subject to model! I'll be watching this closely.
  18. This entire thread was poisoned when at the very end you asked for people to pay even some of your expenses to go to other contests. Sorry...this hobby isn't about the money. If you want to go to a show, go. If you want to offer to judge, do so. The hobby isn't about money. The only time I've heard of anyone covering any costs is when a show has extended an offer to a celebrity to appear, and that's not someone coming in to judge. Any time money gets involved in paying judges...it's not a fair show. You can go on all day about how honest you might be, but to be perfectly honest, by "offering your services" the entire jist of this thread is suspect. As for honesty vs. dishonesty when it comes to judging, there's a reason NNL's are so popular because there are no judging teams. I don't build models for winning hardware. That's not why I like this hobby or why I build. I have to wonder about people whose pure motivation is getting a trophy for their model. It's a lot less work to go buy yourself a trophy if you really want one. Most modelers are tickled pink when their model is photographed and appears in a magazine.
  19. I can see that rear bumper quite clearly Looking forward to seeing them! Can't wait to bend Bill's ear about the kit in a week when he's in Atlanta.
  20. They already have the tooling for the coupe and testshots for the ACR, which only required a new rear wing, wheels, hood, and a few other parts. I doubt they'll kill the kit at this point, and the Viper's life has been in question long before now. The ACR is a hot, hot, hot Viper...it should sell a lot better than the standard coupe did.
  21. Touchups like that usually look awful on a real car, so it probably will look more awful on a model which is much smaller & the touchup much larger. But at this point you really have nothing to lose. That Kustom Kolor paint is awful stuff, there's good reason it's not available any more. They poisoned the HOK name w/that garbage. It is NOT HOK paint...it was just crappy paint by "the makers of HOK paint". Relying on spray can paint that's not sold anymore that also is well-known to cause big problems (cracks when re-applied or cleared over) is pretty risky...I'd say you might want to strip it again if your touchup doesn't work, and get & use some real paint.
  22. I don't have photos but this is painfully easy to do. Get a circle template (Office Depot & art stores have them in the drafting area), and a white "Gellyroll" fine point gel pen (Michael's & others have them), you center the template over a tire, hold the template & tire w/one hand and holding the pen as straight as possible with the other draw a line around the tire. Takes about 5 to 10 seconds per tire, draw it quickly and smoothly, go over the same area a few times to get it as smooth as possible. You will have to practice; you will learn how centered vs. non-centered works, and what happens when the ink seeps under the template if you aren't careful. Have a paper towel soaked w/some rubbing alcohol to wipe the test whitewalls clean. Lather, rinse, repeat. If you don't have a good set of whitewalls in 5 or 10 minutes of practicing, you probably shouldn't be building model cars in the first place
  23. Thanks for all the replies I'm leaning towards graphics reminiscent of this car: Satin/semigloss black hood w/body color stripes, bringing the black to the fender edges and extending to the lower corner of the quarter glass, like an AAR Barracuda. I doubt I'll do any other stripes. The wheels I have set aside for this should be pretty close to the Hurst wheels as well. Hopefully I'll have the body painted/cleared later this week.
  24. Keep MCM drama-free and quit bugging Harry with new skirmishes and about old ones. Let him do his job, which right now cannot be easy with everyone pointing fingers and whining.
