Wow. That's a...beauty. No pesky compound curves to deal with. Looks like fun.

XR-6 (glue bomb restoration) Update 1/18/17
Ace-Garageguy replied to RancheroSteve's topic in WIP: Model Cars
The AMT parts pack wheels are the same diameter as the kit rear wheels, but are 4-bolt, while the kit rear wheels are 5. The parts-pack version also has some raised-edge rib detail on the spokes that's not present on the XR-6 kit wheels. EDIT: Sorry...didn't see that you had already posted comparison pix. -
XR-6 (glue bomb restoration) Update 1/18/17

If you mean Tognitti's King T, it had similar centers, but they had wood spoke overlays to simulate the 'artillery' look, and are represented as such in the kit. -
Thing is, it's really easy to blame the car, but there was a serious lapse of judgement and taking personal responsibility that actually was the primary contributing factor to this tragedy. No matter how you analyze this crash, it's absolutely and completely 100% obvious that the vehicle was traveling at a rate of speed completely not-appropriate for the location and conditions. Cars do not disintegrate and explode when crashed if they're traveling at sane speeds for a "business park" that has fixed objects around.

I just looked in the Nomad kit I have on the shelf...bought open...and no injection manifold. Sorry. I also looked in some other kits and the AMT double dragster kit has smallblock Chevy / Hilborn-style manifolds, but though they're illustrated as having fins in the valley cover area, the ones on the tree have no fins, and are soft on detail. Another strike. There's a pic of this one on a Dennis Lacy build at http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=66362 AMT's "Grant King" modified has an an injected smallblock Chevy too, but again, soft details and no valley fins. Monogram's "Super Modified" that comes in the Racing Classics combo kit (and others) has a little Chevy Hilborn FI manifold with fins in the valley and readable "Hilborn" in the right places. Unfortunately, it also has a molded (but easily removable) magneto, and the injector body detail is soft. BUT, it has the fuel block in the right place too, and with a little work and real aluminum stacks, it could look very good.

The spy shots make me think "catfish". -
With those swoopy lines and tapering tail, this is one of the few cars that the '50s jet-fighter theme actually works well on. Cool.

Beautiful model of a really fantastic and important car.

XR-6 (glue bomb restoration) Update 1/18/17
Ace-Garageguy replied to RancheroSteve's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Great pictorial article written by the guy who actually built the car. I remember following parts of the build in Hot Rod back when, and much of it was used as reference material in 'how-to' articles in other Petersen publications. -
Ross Gibson has the right style manifold, but without fins on the valley cover, and the details look a little soft.
-
If it's Hilborn, the injection manifolds for the Olds in the Anglia kit should look pretty close to smallblock Chevy port spacing....unless he ran a one-piece manifold with an integral finned valley cover. This is the one-piece, which looks like your first photo, and Speed City's doesn't look quite right.
-
Yes, I changed the post and added a photo of a different style injector in one version of the real car. The flanges on top of the cast aluminum injector bodies are thick, like the Enderle injectors. Your first photo looks like Hilborn style. What engine is in the real car as you're building it? That will determine which injector port-spacing you'll need.
-
Never mind...nothing I found is right. What engine is in the Rod Shop Anglia as you're building it? But here's a shot of the engine bay showing different Enderle-style injectors instead of Hilborn, and a polished firewall...

...Or buy one. When ABS first hit the market on top line vehicles, I witnessed several destroyed by untrained owners who thought you could go into any turn way too hot, and the ABS would save you. Nope.
-
Well, see...not necessarily. When brakes are locked-up, like if the ABS was malfunctioning OR dis-engaged, locked wheels DON'T steer. The car slides straight on the course it was established on when the brakes locked up. Steering does not return until the brakes unlock, and the wheels begin to turn again. Of course, a trained professional driver should know immediately to take his foot off of the brake to unlock the wheels and regain steering control...assuming the brakes WOULD release. I don't know all the possible failure modes of the systems on this particular vehicle...obviously it's so rare and expensive I've never even seen a real one...but an ABS failure coupled with a steering failure is surely conceivable in a vehicle that's supposedly been plagued with problems.

As a Studebaker owner and enthusiast, you surely know a lot more about the truth of the R5 than I do. Was the R5 ever listed as an optional engine package? I've heard stories (unfounded rumors and gossip possibly) that there were actually several built, and that's what I based my statements on. If there was only one experimental version, it wouldn't work as an FX, obviously, but it could still be a what-if factory exhibition drag car. If the R5 wasn't ever listed as an option, what WAS the highest output package available either factory or dealer-installed? And am I correct in my understanding that both the Lark and the Avanti were built on what were essentially '53 design frames?

Thanks for the photo, Brett. Based on this and a couple of responses I got over on the "resin and aftermarket" board, I'm going to order the Parks versions. Cut down to the height I need, I think they'll give as close to the right look as I'm going to get (which looks pretty close to me) without taking a lot of time to make custom parts. Thanks again.
