sjordan2 Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Fabulous work, especially the chrome, and that dashboard is a jewel. You've reinforced my planned color scheme for the 1/16 SS Kabriolet (black and German gray with red interior). As you work your way up to a Pocher, I'd love to see what you'd do with the 1/16 540K kit.
Guest Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Beautiful! I love the color–not the typical red, black or silver. Really, really nice work. X2!!

Years ago I made a start on the SS...the chassis is ready for paint and the wheels are built up. I really need to take another look in that box. That color combo will look stunning on that car! When building this model, I wanted to avoid the look that a lot of the 1:1 500/540K's have now. A lot of the cars you see online were restored in the 80s and 90s when you had to make a million-dollar car look like a rolling jukebox. The car this one seems to be modeled on, for example was restored in a bright red in the early 90s.The engine and chassis are incorrectly painted red and everything else is chrome plated or turned aluminum under the hood. The coil springs are even chrome plated! Edited June 28, 2015 by jaymcminn
sjordan2 Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 (edited) I know the red/red/red 500K you're talking about, and it's over-the-top garish. Here's the SS I want to replicate in the 1/16 kit (hard to see, but it's gray with black fenders & molding, red interior. I don't know if you saw it, but Harry did a killer version of the kit a few months ago in yellow and black. Edited June 28, 2015 by sjordan2

I'm leaning toward the cycle fender version with the separate running boards for my SS. as far as the color scheme goes, I'm leaning toward almost the reverse of the scheme on this car- dark red over maroon with a grey interior and black wheels.
sjordan2 Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 I just looked at your complete Photobucket file on this 500K. It's truly impressive and shows off the interior and engine much better.
peekay Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Beautifully done! Having built one of these last year I can really appreciate the skill that's gone into this build - plus the good taste in colour choices!

If you want to do an SSK/SSKL version of the 1/16 kit, you're going to have to shorten the chassis.
Dave Van Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 WOW....nice work! I built one back in the day...another in my stash.....
Eric Macleod Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 This is simply stunning. Every detail is right on point. You have certainly done the old Johan justice. Your model must be one of the best 540 roadsters I have ever seen. Well done. I concur, come to the dark side and build Classics with a capital C with the rest of us!
superbike-shaun Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Wow that almost looks like it is an "a"body size wise,as compared to the a,b,c,&d bodies of the 40,s50s,and,60s,and so elegantly done.just beautiful work!,way to bust, that slump!,superbike-shaun
unclescott58 Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Stunningly beautiful model Jason. Very nice. Scott
Matt Bacon Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Utterly brilliant, and perfect colour choices. Looks like you well and truly busted your slump! bestest, M.
Maindrian Pace Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Beautiful job, I don't recall ever seeing this kit built. Too bad, it's impressive.
Matt Bacon Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 (edited) So good, in fact, that I liked it so much that I bought the company ;-P Or at least my own Johan 500K for £15 from eBay UK -- I hope I can do it such justice as Jay has. I'm sure I've got an Octane with one that has grey upholstery with a similar battleship grey exterior. It looked REALLY cool... bestest, M. Edited July 1, 2015 by Matt Bacon

I'm sure you've done your homework on the car in your picture (which is a Cabriolet A and not the subject of the Johan kit), but I have many detail shots of that car, plus many other 500K special roadsters. I can send you a compressed file if you can use Stuffit Expander or something that will work with Stuffit files (sitx). Also, I suggest you go to Schlegelmilch.com for some excellent Special Roadster photography. Plus, we have a recent member on this forum (MAGIC MUFFLER, aka Billy Corbett), who does prep and maintenance work for Gooding and Company and their clients on the top classic Mercedes 500/540K examples they've sold. Nacho Z Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Very nice, Jason. Great work on all of it. The dash looks fantastic!
