Guest Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Got a Monogram Untouchables kit set in a trade, the 30 Ford Coupe and a Late 20's early 30's vintage Rolls Royce. They look like very nice kits. Anyone have any history on the kits? Built them? Were there other kits in the series?
64Comet404 Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 The Rolls Royce was first issued back in the late 60's as part of Monogram's classic car series, while the Model A was first issued as a 6 in 1 kit back in the early 60's, with all the rod and custom stuff deleted years ago (along with the Cabriolet option). I can't remember any issues with the Rolls, but the roof on the Coupe can be a bit fiddly to glue; using CA and liquid glue would help.
horsepower Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 It takes a little work but removing the package tray from the roof makes it easier to paint the entire body as one piece, and do the interior separate.
Chuck Kourouklis Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 (edited) Yup. I managed to work around mine, but Del's way would definitely make body painting easier. In the background of this little group: Edited July 21, 2015 by Chuck Kourouklis Better pix of '30 Coupe added
Allen Wrench Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 Wow, Chuck, for an alleged non-builder who has nothing invested in the hobby and is hell-bent on destroying it, those are some really nice models!
Chuck Kourouklis Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 (edited) OH.uh…woops? (Thanks, btw!) Edited July 21, 2015 by Chuck Kourouklis
Guest Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 Beautiful model Chuck! I hope mine turns out half that nice.
JTalmage Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 I love the 30 Model A ford kits... so much hot rod potential
Dennis Lacy Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 I love the 30 Model A ford kits... so much hot rod potential Gotta agree with you! Here's a hot rod based on the '30 Coupe. Not much left of the original kit but I used the body and modified the frame. I also attached the roof section ahead of time like others have suggested and added .040" half-round styrene around the joint to cover it up. It's the only way to get good results with the body. I didn't cut out the package shelf but kind of wish I would have. I notched the back of the seat, though, so the seat covers most of it up. Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki
JTalmage Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 I also have apparently attached the roof too early on one of my projects. Whoops.
Chuck Kourouklis Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 Now that's awesome, Dennis! VERY nice.Saw a pretty one in The Rodder's Journal that's had me thinking for a while, but now that Revell's appealing directly to my laziness with a future release, I'm prob'ly gonna wait a bit longer...
bbowser Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 (edited) The Rolls builds up really nice as well. I"m pretty sure they've both been released separately over the years, the Rolls as part of Monogram's Museum Pieces series of classics from the '30s. You can see what the others mean about the separate roof section Edited July 21, 2015 by bbowser additional info
mike 51 Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Very nice Dennis...thanks for the tip on covering up that unsightly gap.
Art Anderson Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 The Rolls Royce in the Untouchables double kit is a 1931 Springfield Rolls Royce, with a Brewster Sport Phaetion body. For those who don't know, Rolls Royce built cars in Springfield MA for about 10 years, starting in the very early 1920's--pretty much identical to those built in the UK, except for the obvious left-hand drive setup. This kit is a Phantom I, same series Rolls as the Henley Roadster first released about 1966 by Monogram, the Sport Phaeton kit coming out in the mid-1970's. Art
Guest Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Thanks Art, that will make it easier to find reference photos.
charlie8575 Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Yup. I managed to work around mine, but Del's way would definitely make body painting easier. In the background of this little group: That wood-grain is exquisite! Decal or really good painting? Charlie Larkin
Chuck Kourouklis Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Thanks, Charlie - It shoots a bit better than it really appears, and I have no idea just how accurate the coloring is, but that's just dry-brushing - Tamiya red-brown over a tan or maybe desert yellow base. Monogram's engraving provided the grain highlights for the dry brush to pick up.Not so bad for tooling from a half century ago...
sjordan2 Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 (edited) FYI, if you want to build one of the Monogram 1931 Rolls-Royces, you'll want reference for the Phantom II. The Phantom I was discontinued in 1928. You'll find great info and images at rmauctions.com, and I have tons of material I can share with you. I also recommend that you follow Cato's Rolls Sedanca and Harry's Rolls woody threads in Big Boyz to see their Pocher builds. Edited July 23, 2015 by sjordan2
