Porscheman Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 (edited) I won this one on ebay for 21 bucks. It's a very rare 64 Rambler American with a straight six. I bid on this one because it was brush painted, that the best for stripping to bare plastic. This will be bone stock, the only way I like them. This may take me a while, since I need to get a hood from The Modelhaus. Thanks for looking. Al Edited October 26, 2015 by Porscheman
cobraman Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Way Al ! When you say it may take you awhile do you mean 2 days ? : ) I'm sure it will look great when you are finished with it. Good luck !
BIGTRUCK Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Hopefully its more of a paint bomb vs. glue bomb , but either way theres some work ahead
Snake45 Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 There's nothing in this hobby I like better than bringing some clapped-out old crock back from the dead. Good luck with your project and keep us posted!
Crusader101 Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Love your old annual restorations. Looking forward to this one.
Ace-Garageguy Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 (edited) Yup...love seeing an old mess made into the proverbial silk purse. Edited October 9, 2015 by Ace-Garageguy
Ramfins59 Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Looking forward to seeing you work your magic on this one Al.
Roadrunner Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 I may have to try this some day, but for the moment I have my hands full just trying to build a new kit.
slusher Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Al, you do great work on your restores. This one needs some love...
Ron Hamilton Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 I really like the mid '60's Rambler Americans. That one looks like a formidable restoration, and I know you are up for the job. I have the '64(unbuilt), '65, Hardtop turned into a convertible) ,'66 Hardtop, and a '66 Convertible, that was this... and where it is now Fortunately, the person I got it from gave me some pieces from the S/C Rambler. I filled the hole in the hood, and recreated the center bump. The original '66 hood is not available in resin, but I bought a few S/C Ramblers for donors while they were cheap. If you need a 6 cylinder engine, Replicas & Miniatures Co. of MD has one in their line. All of mine will be 6 Cylinder Cars..

Eric Macleod Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Ugly model? Holy cow! I will look forward to seeing how you resuscitate the dead on this one. You have your work cut out for you.E-
Tom Geiger Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Don't worry Al, that paint should polish out! At least you know it's dry! See you tomorrow.
Porscheman Posted October 10, 2015 Author Posted October 10, 2015 Hows this one coming along Al ?It goes into the Purple Power after I get home from my club meeting tomorrow. I want others to witness how bad this one is.

I still say it will polish out! Looks like it was painted with a Q-Tip. Bring it to the meeting. We can pass it around while we eat the fried chicken. Maybe the chicken grease will help the stripper!
ChrisBcritter Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 (edited) I really want to see how this comes out - was the vendor autozonehobbies? Almost all the kits/promos from their collection look like they were painted with a trowel. I put in low bids on a couple of them, but I just couldn't tell what was under that stuff. I should have saved some of the images... Edited October 10, 2015 by ChrisBcritter
LouO Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Yikes, looks like you got some work ahead of you! I'm sure you will work your magic on this one though!
disabled modeler Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 its nice to see these old poorly built ones saved and brought back from the dead...in a sense its like saving some model history.
Tom Geiger Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 its nice to see these old poorly built ones saved and brought back from the dead...in a sense its like saving some model history. I'm all for saving old builds and the work of the original builder... but not this time!
disabled modeler Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 I agree with you there Tom...I have some that will always be like i got them...but some require TLC to save them...hardest part is finding the missing or damaged parts that need replaced...I have too many waiting there turn due to that...just eats at me waiting to restore them and cant...real bummer.
Can-Con Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 A challenge is always more fun than just painting some parts and gluing them together. This one was done on a bet. Before,, After,,,
W-409 Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Great to see one old Annual Kit brought back to life! I think restoring old Glue Bombs / builtups is probably the best part in model building. It's surprising how poor quality "junker" can be turned into a real beauty. I bet it will be the case with this one since you do great work. These '64 Americans have been on my must have list for a long time, but never came across one. Well, maybe some day.
Porscheman Posted October 13, 2015 Author Posted October 13, 2015 Well after 4 days in Purple Power, I come to realize the person who painted it had stock in a paint company This thing has 7 or 8 coats of paint, but it's coming off slow but sure. Because the bumpers and wheel covers were also brush painted, I didn't even bother to take it apart when it went in the tank. I'll redo the chrome with Alclad. It's not pretty yet. Al
