crazyjim Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Marcia wants to try and build a bookmobile. I was thinking of converting a step van. Any suggestions for a kit we might start out with?
crazyjim Posted October 12, 2015 Author Posted October 12, 2015 That could work if the body is hollow. I went to website but it doesn't seem to work. I'll try again tomorrow. Thanks for the info, Ken.
Snake45 Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 The bookmobiles I've seen are bigger than that. Some of them are closer to a medium-sized schoolbus in size.
BIGTRUCK Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Motor city resin makes these Its hollow, kits contents are on lower right corner of the box
Harry P. Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 The bookmobiles I've seen are bus sized and look like converted RVs.
Foxer Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 (edited) That could work if the body is hollow. I went to website but it doesn't seem to work. I'll try again tomorrow. Thanks for the info, Ken.It is hollow .. I have one here. I think it would make a good Book Mobile. I got mine to model my step-son's Food Truck. I'll be modeling all the inside. The front doors are made to slide in place but you'll have to do some hinging got any back or side doors. Jeff Ballard does fantastic casting and this in one for sure. The insides are about as smooth as the outsides and not hugely think. Here's a forum page with a large photo of the kit.Bookmobiles come in many shapes and sizes and I've seen many in a Grumman Kurbmaster and competing makes. Edited October 12, 2015 by Foxer
Tom Geiger Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Yes, bookmobiles I remember were full size city bus size. Come to think of it, when was the last time you saw one? Then I saw these images so anything goes! Google Images on Bookmobiles
LDO Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 (edited) If she would prefer working with styrene, Tamiya offers he old Toyota "Hiace" van: Build thread: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234956311-tamiya-hiace-quick-delivery-built-by-motorsports-team-set/ I just noticed the build thread never got finished. Art Anderson Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 That could work if the body is hollow. I went to website but it doesn't seem to work. I'll try again tomorrow. Thanks for the info, Ken.Jim, I've seen it, and yes, the body shell is hollow. However, as others have noted, most "Bookmobiles" are at, or nearly the size of a city bus, although here in Tippecanoe County, the public library uses a 35' gooseneck trailer and duallie pickup truck to tow it (Galaxie Ltd. trailer would be a perfect match for that one)Art
unclescott58 Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 The bookmobile in the suburb of Minneapolis I grew in, Fridley, MN, was about the size of a city bus. I loved the bookmobile. It's a shame they don't have bookmobiles today.

It's a shame they don't have bookmobiles today. When I was a kid my grandparents lived in Jersey City, NJ. At the bottom of their street, there was a large old folks home and the bookmobile would often be parked there. As a kid interested in all things on wheels, I made my grandfather take me there so I could walk through the book mobile to inspect it. Yes it was the size of a city bus. When I did the Google Images search above, I was intrigued by the grand variety of bookmobiles and the ingenuity.
crazyjim Posted October 13, 2015 Author Posted October 13, 2015 Thanks for the comments fellas. I'm going to try and locate a Tamiya Hiace. You have to bear in mind that Marcia has built a '34 Ford Snap Tite kit. That's it! I think styrene would be easier for her. Also, we live in Citrus County, Fl that has about 130,000 people and is rural to semi-rural. We don't have all the conveniences of the big cities. Stores and services tend to be smaller and few when you can find them. That's part of the reason she wants to build smaller.
sjordan2 Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 (edited) Jimmy Flintstone makes a 1:25 resin 1950 Ford school bus with tub (use Revell 1950 Ford F-100 pickup as the donor). http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=1%2F16&_sop=10&_armrs=1&_pcats=1188%2C220&_osacat=2580&_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=jimmy+flintstone+school+bus&_sacat=2580 Edited October 13, 2015 by sjordan2

Tom Geiger Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 Thanks again everyone. I just ordered 2 Tamiya Hiace kits from Hong Kong. Start making books now Jim!
crazyjim Posted October 14, 2015 Author Posted October 14, 2015 Not me, Tom. It's going to be Marcia's project and she's going to do the work.
MGL Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 (edited) Some of the evergreen siding could be used to simulate books on a shelf and can be ordererd with different groove spacing. Edited October 14, 2015 by MGL
crazyjim Posted October 14, 2015 Author Posted October 14, 2015 Good idea Mark. Thanks. Maybe make some decals to cover the evergreen.
