James2 Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 (edited) As if I needed something else to start! With winters firm grip on northeast Ohio I have been forced to build and not paint at this point. One of the to do cars on my 2016 build list is a 40 Ford Custom. Chopping one of these is no easy task if you want it to look right. I have a Revell Standard kit that will not be chopped. I picked up an AMT 40 in a bag at a swap meet this weekend and decided to take the saw in hand. here is what I have done so far... Using this drawing I found on the HAMB, I made the same cuts as close as I could. Edited January 19, 2016 by James2
wayne swayze Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 You have my attention as usual James ! The chop is looking great so far !
junkyardjeff Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 I will definately watch this build, would love to build a chopped 40 custom.
James2 Posted January 19, 2016 Author Posted January 19, 2016 Thanks guys! I forgot to mention, I have put this build off for a few years now but when I found this 40 buried in a box and marked $5. I knew I could do it!
junkyardjeff Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 I picked up a built Revell 40 standard I could do that to but it will be a couple years before I can begin to think about doing it.
Sixties Sam Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Very nice work on the chop! It does look like a tough job to do.Sam
EL LOCO Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Well done on the chop.Something I have no experience in doing. Will have to learn as my next project is my mates 32 Ford Speedster and his roof is chopped. Looking forward to seeing it when finished
Balsa Manufaktur Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 I can learn something for my cuttings in balsa wood .. excellent !
bobthehobbyguy Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Nice start. Beautiful work on chop. The roof flows nicely.
tubbs Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 as usual, nice work James. will be another killer build. missed your mug at the meeting, hope you are getting the concrete poured in this nasty weather. do you have plans on making the next one, I will bring the 59?
James2 Posted January 19, 2016 Author Posted January 19, 2016 Thanks guys! Al not really sure it's a 100 mile round trip from my job site, if I can I will. Here is the basic look I'm trying to get...
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 You're right on about these being tough to chop and get right, but it looks like you've nailed it. Nice proportions and roof-line.
exesivefire Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 Looks like a good start James.. You have just as bad of building ADD as I do! Ok maybe not.. That AMT kit brings back horrible memories, but I wouldn't have passed up a $5 project either.
tubbs Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 Thanks guys! Al not really sure it's a 100 mile round trip from my job site, if I can I will. Here is the basic look I'm trying to get... looking good James. just beautiful. well, I wouldn't travel 100 miles on a cold night.
squirrel886 Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 Nice job on the chop! The profile looks really good!
James2 Posted January 20, 2016 Author Posted January 20, 2016 Thanks again guys, Yes Andy I do! Normally I would not start this many builds. I've been pretty disciplined in my builds. But between working out of town and not being able to paint, I choose to build.I do have a plan to put up a booth in my construction office!
DrKerry Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 Got the right look and your right a 39 40 Ford is no easy animal to bring the roof down on!!!!
James2 Posted January 22, 2016 Author Posted January 22, 2016 Working on this turd trying to get the fit right. It really is pour design by 21 century standards but I'm having fun with it non the less. I replaced the trim and it's just about ready for filler.
wayne swayze Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 Lovin' it ! Have you thought about a colour yet ?
Draggon Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 It's starting to really look good. That side trim added a lot to make it look longer and lower. Nice work on that chop, these aren't the most easiest of subjects.
carnut Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 Man you absolutely nailed the chop and the direction your going with this looks good too.I've chopped a couple of these and this technique will work with most Ford, Chevy and Plymouth coupes as well as any turret style roof with a few modifications.keep going on this.
James2 Posted January 22, 2016 Author Posted January 22, 2016 (edited) No real color choice yet, but I would like to keep it vintage. Thanks for the comments also guys. I'm planning out how to put the driprail back next. I believe I'd like to smooth things up first, soak the fenders in some paint remover and finish adjusting the body fit and finish. To pull the rear fenders in tighter I scribed this portion of the inner fender and removed just enough material to make a tighter fit. I also filled in the holes where the bumper brackets were on the trunk area. Edited January 22, 2016 by James2
Jantrix Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 I would rescribe the door lines before and then again after filler. Doing it before makes the after sooooo much easier.
