Mike 1017 Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 (edited) This is a brand new can that I bought at Hobby Lobby. Look what happened when it dried. Not very shiny is it? It's not mislabeled Dull Coat either. It does not smell like Dull Coat. When I de-canted it is very cloudy. It does give it that satin look that is pretty popular in the 1:1 custom world. dshue76 Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 Looks wrong to me, either your base coat was so rough that the clear can't shine or the clear coat is bad. I'll pick #2. I'm not a fan of testors, and I'm reminded why everytime I give their products another chance at redemption. I just got a bottle of their acryl flat clear that left a gloss finish (more gloss than the base coat)... My opinion is their products are over priced and low quality across the board. You would be better off using the Dupli Color products I've never had an issue with their stuff. Quality is always good and I haven't had any problems with them being too hot. And their lacquer smells like lacquer, no funny business with the chemistry.
oldcarfan Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 For the clear coat, it could have been humidity. I used some Testors Wet Look Clear Gloss a while back. I had used this same can before and it worked fine. This time, I sprayed two bodies and they both came out dull. One of them I resprayed the next day and it came out okay. The other I polished out.
Edsel-Dan Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 I never used the Model Master stuff, but the standard Clear.I Quit using it when a simple piece of tape would peal it offMONTHS later!!Or when it would burn through with a VERY old bottle of Turtle wax!!
Mooneyzs Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 My Guess is that the paint blushed on you. Which its caused from High humidity or if its too cold when spraying.
slusher Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 Could be humidity, i would try another can or try that same can on another old part...
peteski Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Strange that it was cloudy when you decanted it. But if it was humid at that time, the moisture could have also mixed with the decanted liquid (as it really cool down when being decanted).
Chrischu33 Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 Personally I am not a huge fan of enamel based clear coats (or color coats). I like to use lacquer, testor's wet look clear works like a charm and so does ts-13 clear
Daddyfink Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 What is the part number on the can? For some reason they are using the same style labels for both. Gloss Coat is #1261Dull Coat is #1260
ranma Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 I have had real good luck with Krylon Hobby Clear. I agree with you on the Krylon Clear, even works on Dupli color paint!
Sledsel Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 That and the PlastiKote projekt clear. Goes on like glass. Both enamel base, so covering Duplicolor is easy
Sledsel Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 This has Projekt clear over flat black. No rubbing done to it
ranma Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 That and the PlastiKote projekt clear. Goes on like glass. Both enamel base, so covering Duplicolor is easy Yep, that Krylon Clear work even on rustolium's paints
Lovefordgalaxie Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 Tamiya clear, the Clear Champion! Aaahh! I was going to say the same. Mike, you know me. I have a simple rule on spray can paint: Tamiya or no spray can. (OK, Tamiya, please, give me my 10% already) The stuff is hard to find and expensive here, but I pay happy. Never, ever had a bad result. I use a lot of Testors and Model Master paints, both enamel and acrylic, but only for airbrushing.
High octane Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 I've never experienced any trouble using Testors Ultra Gloss Clear or Wet Look Clear, as I've used them both over a number of paint jobs and they came out great.
unclescott58 Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 Interesting. As noted in another posting here in Model Building Questions and Answers, I'll be using the Testors clear gloss lacquer over decals in the next day or two. I'll be post my results there. I too, like Jesse and Tulio above, prefer Tamiya lacquer over all others. But, since this will be going over Testors Plum Crazy lacquer, I decided to stick with the same brand.
Daddyfink Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 Don't get me wrong, I have used, and still have, the Testors Lacquer clear and it works great, but, I have always gotten better results with Tamiya. Yes, not cheap, but well worth it. But enough of what we like, So, OP, which clear did you have? Was it the dull coat?
martinfan5 Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 I prefer Mr Hobby Super Clear, I like that it comes in a larger can.
AC Norton Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 Tamiya clear, the Clear Champion! Aaahh! no doubt about it.....best there is, like all their sprays....the Ace....
