doctor phillips Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 Have you seen this? http://www.motortrend.com/news/airplane-engine-1939-plymouth-pickup-radically-radial/
High octane Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 Yes, I've seen pictures of that ride a few weeks ago, and it's pretty cool.
Greg Myers Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 (edited) Sad thing is, aircraft kits with engines in scale, 1/25 - 1/24 are quite spendy. Edited June 29, 2016 by Greg Myers
Fat Brian Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 This reminds me of the crazy European pulling tractors with huge radial engines. http://www.anglaberga.se/album1/Tractorpulling/Photos/slides/Tracrorpulling_0019.JPG
dragstk Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 I saw this one and kinda had to take a few minutes to think about it. While I truly appreciate the thought and effort that went into putting that engine in that truck, its not my cup of tea. But I absolutely love the body work. Put a straight 8, or a V-12, I dont care a SMC , put a hood on it and some side covers. Now your talkin'!!
Spex84 Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 Really cool idea, must have been inspired by this one by Haus of Hotrods: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NT9GgpeNFyk It's been around for a few years already. https://i.ytimg.com/vi/NT9GgpeNFyk/maxresdefault.jpg
Snake45 Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 Just because one CAN do something does not automatically make it a GOOD idea.
slusher Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 I like the look of the truck but the engine not so much...
oldnslow Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 While that's a nice show piece for your construction skills, that's all it is, would over heat and melt in traffic.
Quick GMC Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 they don't really drive it. They fire it up for shows and stuff, but it's not a functioning build in the sense you can drive it around
unclescott58 Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 (edited) Just because one CAN do something does not automatically make it a GOOD idea.I'm surprised you don't like this one Snake? At least that's what I assume from your above statement. Me? I think it's kind of cool. Edited July 11, 2016 by unclescott58
bobthehobbyguy Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 Cool. If you were going to do one in 1/24th ot 1/25th you'd have to scratchbuild and engine. Might be able to do it in 1/32nd scale if you could find a suitable body.
Modlbldr Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 I showed this to my wife and she said "That's just an accident waiting to happen." I can't understand why she doesn't appreciate it like I do.Later-

Not this particular engine, but the Jap Zero and P-47 are both available, for instance.Kinda expensive donor for just an engine at $60-$150 a shot though.
bobthehobbyguy Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 I was recommending scratchbuilding one just because of the cost.

I don't like impracticality. Airplane radial engines are made to run at a constant, fairly high power level (not much idling or speed changing involved), and to have air flowing around them at 100mph or more all the time. Not really practical for road use at all. OTOH, from what I've read, you can have a cylinder or two blown completely off and the thing will still run--though it will probably be flinging prodigious quantities of oil around.
