Your doing some fantastic work on this model.  I'm building the same kit but not nearly to the extreme your doing with this 500.

The one thing that I would like to do is open the hood vents...but my first attempt at it ruined the original hood, so I had to beg, borrow steal to get a replacement hood.  Any thoughts on how to open the vents or should I forget about doing that and move on with the project?

Btw, after much knashing of teeth and cursing myself I was able to get a replacement hood from AMT by supplying them the model code from the box.  I guess they had some extras.  It took 3 weeks however to receive it, but I probably would gladly waited 3 years.

Thank you!  I looked at trying to open them up, but trying to cut those little pieces in between the vent would be almost impossible without taking some risks.  I thought about cutting the entire vent out and then using thin sheet styrene to recreate it.  It can be done, but would have to be meticulous in order to make it look right.

well like I found out when I ruined the hood.  Like you I thought about cutting them out a building my own vents.  Who knows, maybe someone else can chime in with ideas.

There's only a couple ways I can think of in trying to replicate those vents. Either make them out of PE fret, or make each vent out of .010 plastic strip carefully spacing and angling each one out. You'd need to cut out the entire openings in doing this, and then there's the trouble of keeping everything symmetrical.

One other possible method that just came to mind while typing this, you can very carefully grind away at the underside of the vents in the hood with a moto-tool (slow speed of course) to open them up that way, but that's tricky too.

Not an easy task for either method, and it's something I was thinking about on my Shelby build, but I may just let that detail go.

Still waiting on my seats to arrive, but I was able to complete some of the interior today and piddled with the suspension. Emergency brake cabling is next now that the pinion angle is set and the 4-link is mounted in the rear. I had to make a custom length drive shaft as well. Still have to run the soft lines to the calipers on all four corners and finish painting the exhaust.

Don't worry, the exhaust is just primed white... its just a mockup and will be stainless steel color, but the brake lines and emergency brake lines are hooked up.

Nice work.

A couple of questions: did you foil the dash? & what colour did you use for the fuel tank?

Cheers

Thanks!  I usually try and foil the dash, or alclad them, but the space is really tight.  There is this new chrome pen that everyone is raving about and I ordered a few.  They are called Molotow Chrome Pens and they work really great in small areas on the dash, so I gave it a shot and liked it.  Some people are using them for trim as well, but I still prefer BMF for those details.  The fuel tank is Testors Metalizer Aluminum and sealed with their sealer.

That is stunning work. Great details that you've added. I can't wait to get started on my 67. It keeps getting pushed back by other builds though.

Incredible! Love the detailing, paint, opening features...you're turning a pig's ear into a real silk purse.

I picked up a partially started 90s issue of this kit a couple years ago at a garage sale, took one look at it and thought "welp, that's a parts kit!"

Lately I've been tossing around the idea of a pro-touring build, using the kit wheels sunk into sleeves.

I can see now that I might have to actually build it!..would have to order some of those wheels from Zimmerman though. They look fantastic.

Outstanding work on this project so far tim. Your level of detail is sure impressive.

Hi Tim, yup just started a topic today. 68 Dodge Dart. Should see it a couple topics down here on the work bench. Just getting started on it. So not much in the post yet..

Thanks, fellas!  I am still waiting on my seats to arrive, which should be any day now.  Once they get here, I can get them painted and install the 5-point belts.  I did some more detailing tonight like the bumpers and lights.  I still have to install the PE grill when it gets here.  I went ahead and built and added the strut tower braced and monte carlo bar. I made these out of tubing, bolts, nuts, rod ends and washers. Since this kit doesn't have the true strut towers like the original, I had to improvise a little.
