afx Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 (edited) A series of (3) new roadster were produced in early ’63 to add to the Shelby Team stable to compete in the USRRC. The cars were chassis numbers CSX 2127, 2128 and 2129. The cars were each built to the same spec. with 2127 and 2128 painted black and 2129 painted red. The rear wheel openings were enlarged and additional fairing installed to fit the racing rubber chosen. CSX2127 and 2128 had the driver’s door notched to allow for additional elbow clearance like other early racing Cobras. The Sebring cars ran a larger scoop. I reshaped the hood from the Revellogram 427 Cobra to fit the AMT body. The AMT hood is shown for comparison. Edited January 8, 2017 by afx
RancheroSteve Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 Wow, you don't stop - one more thread to follow! These are among my favorite Cobras.
250 Testa Rossa Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 I'll be following this one for sure since I'm gonna be doing CSX2128.
afx Posted January 8, 2017 Author Posted January 8, 2017 I never thought I would build the same kit over and over. However there is enough variation in each car to pique my interest. I love race cars of this era and the Cobra in particular (obviously). I enjoy the story of each one.
Xingu Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 The rear wheel openings were enlarged and additional fairing installed to fit the racing rubber chosen. Can you imagine seeing this on the road today!! I will be following this thread as well JC.
Jonathan Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 Your work is impressive! Do you have a site showing all of the Cobras you've built and are working on? Or is there a thread on this site showing all of your Cobras together? I think it'd be cool to see all of the differences.

I have a few more Cobra in progress. afx Posted January 8, 2017 Author Posted January 8, 2017 (edited) The cars ran "kidney bean" Halibrands. The wheels are from HRM modified for more offset at the rears. The tires are "Racing Dunlops" from Perry's Resin and are not correct but are the proper size and style. Shelby was a Goodyear distributor and ran Goodyears almost exclusively. dublin boy Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 (edited) Any tips on painting wheels and tyres that are cast as one piece JC? My recent first attempt is nothing like that nice. Edited January 8, 2017 by dublin boy
afx Posted January 8, 2017 Author Posted January 8, 2017 (edited) Any tips on painting wheels and tyres that are cast as one piece JC? My recent first attempt is nothing like that nice. Shay, the wheels I show are separate from the tires. Never tried painting a 1-piece set so I can't offer any advice. Edited January 8, 2017 by afx
afx Posted January 8, 2017 Author Posted January 8, 2017 (edited) The Sebring cars ran an new dash layout. Didn't replicate all the switches but enough for me. The racing seat comes from the Revellogram GT350R modified to replicate the unit Shelby used. Edited January 8, 2017 by afx
afx Posted January 9, 2017 Author Posted January 9, 2017 (edited) I like to add a mounting pin to the windshield frame and drill a corresponding hole in the body. Creates a much more positive connection. 2127 ran a painted black roll bar. I cut the end off the forward brace from the AMT kit part and attach it to the roll hoop like the 1:1 part. I then pin the end of the remaining piece and add through bolt detail. You can just make out the roll bar mods in this picture from another Cobra project. Edited January 9, 2017 by afx
Mark IV Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 Perhaps you can build this whole series of early comp cars:
afx Posted January 9, 2017 Author Posted January 9, 2017 Great photos Rick. I haven't attempted the front fender spats on any of my builds-at least not yet. I have tried, unsuccessfully to build the stone guard.
Xingu Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 You can always tell you are going to pay a lot for restoration/repair work when it is a large, very clean warehouse/shop with lots of space around the cars being worked on. I could spend a whole day just walking around a shop like that.
250 Testa Rossa Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 I think I'm gonna try adding the front fender spats on my build of CSX2128. I'll probably form the riveted edges with Evergreen styrene
Randy D Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 Great to see you rolling along with another Cobra build JC!!!!The hood looks spot on and the dash detail is terrific ! Randy
afx Posted January 11, 2017 Author Posted January 11, 2017 (edited) Thanks Randy, your GT40 build is mind boggling! HRM's FIA engine with scratch built headers. Distributor and coil are from R&M. Other bits and bobs thrown in to add some interest. Edited January 11, 2017 by afx
Intmd8r Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Really nice progress! Lots of eye candy there. Too bad that some of it will be hidden when the body meets the chassis.
afx Posted January 11, 2017 Author Posted January 11, 2017 (edited) Thanks Steve, yea I don't worry too much about the details down inside the front fender wells. Some of those parts may not even be correct - just want to add interest to those areas. I did add the forward frame braces from the main chassis hoop down to the front suspension tower. These are very visible on a Cobra and are not included in the AMT kit. Edited January 11, 2017 by afx
Dann Tier Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Thanks Randy, your GT40 build is mind boggling! HRM's FIA engine with scratch built headers. Distributor and coil are from R&M. Other bits and bobs thrown in to add some interest. WoW!, and Outstanding! come to mind when I see this.
Mark IV Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 JC, You need to fab and add the throttle tower and linkage as seen in these pictures. It is cast aluminum and bolts to the corner of the footbox, the accelerator pedal pivots from it.
