afx Posted April 27, 2017 Author Posted April 27, 2017 Thank you gentlemen. A mock-up to check progress.
afx Posted April 29, 2017 Author Posted April 29, 2017 (edited) Not real exciting stuff to look at but I like my builds to fit together properly. Adjusted the rear track to get proper tire clearance: Lowered the front stance fractionally: Fabricated filler panels at the rear of the chassis: Edited April 29, 2017 by afx
afx Posted April 30, 2017 Author Posted April 30, 2017 Thanks Shay & Randy. For more history on Falcon race cars this book includes a chapter on the Galaxies, Mustangs and Falcons that raced in the BTCC. Alan Mann Racing took advantage of the FIA, suspecting they new little about the US built Falcons (and gambled they wouldn't attempt to verify) and had them homologated with fiberglass hood, fenders, bumpers and trunk lid. That made these lightweight Falcons 400 lbs(!) lighter than a Mustang and producing up to 400 HP these cars were rocket ships that dominated Touring Car racing for several years.
afx Posted April 30, 2017 Author Posted April 30, 2017 (edited) Didn't care for the big void between the inner fender and the foot well... so I fabricated a filler panel. Also boxed in the top of the frame rails. Edited April 30, 2017 by afx
Maindrian Pace Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 The body already looks loads better than what comes out of the box. Nice work on the filler panels too.
Ace-Garageguy Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 Always a treat to watch your cars come together, and to see the kind of thought and planning you put into this stuff. Nice.
DumpyDan Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 Man this is good stuff, gonna keep this in mind if I ever get a Falcon kit........Oh to dream one day.
afx Posted May 1, 2017 Author Posted May 1, 2017 (edited) Glad you guys are enjoying the build. Trans-Am rules of the period did not allow full roll cages, only a simple roll hop. Scratched one up based on the few period photos I could find. Also fabricated the rear bulkhead/package tray. Edited May 3, 2017 by afx
afx Posted May 4, 2017 Author Posted May 4, 2017 Some odds and ends: striped the wheels - applied Tamiya primer looking at air cleaner options Modified the sump on the oil pan Mounted R&M's pre-drilled distributor - I love these things!
RancheroSteve Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 Where did that air cleaner (the one on the engine) come from?
afx Posted May 4, 2017 Author Posted May 4, 2017 Where did that air cleaner (the one on the engine) come from? Where'ya been Steve? I figured you would be all over this project. The air cleaner on the engine is from the Revellogram Shelby GT350 kit. I think it's included in all the Revell '64-1/2-'66 Mustang/Sheby kits. I stripped off the chrome and added the bottom pan from sheet stock.
afx Posted May 4, 2017 Author Posted May 4, 2017 I'll be adding an oil cooler so I need a high volume oil filter. Modified a twin unit form my parts box to make a single. Also here you can see the underside of the air cleaner RancheroSteve was asking about.
cobraman Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 Cool project. Not a Cobra but at least a Ford. : ) BTW I am sending the Cobra books out tomorrow.
afx Posted May 4, 2017 Author Posted May 4, 2017 (edited) Thanks for the comment and the books Ray. Added a fuel pump from the AMT Cobra, the resin oil breathers are from HRM. Edited May 4, 2017 by afx
RancheroSteve Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 Where'ya been Steve? I figured you would be all over this project. Oh yes, I've watching & enjoying it with great interest from the start - my kind of project, for sure! Time's been a little tight one way and another for the past few weeks - the run-up to GSL (this past weekend) and some family issues have kept me busier than usual. Trying to get back to some building myself.
Rodent Posted May 5, 2017 Posted May 5, 2017 Great build JC. Looking forward to the next installment.
afx Posted May 7, 2017 Author Posted May 7, 2017 (edited) Thanks Steve2 and Dennis. Not wired and plumbed yet but engine is painted. Edited May 7, 2017 by afx
afx Posted May 7, 2017 Author Posted May 7, 2017 Trans Am rules allowed for the removal of the bumpers. Since the frame will be exposed I wanted to add some interest so I created to oval opening to replicate the 1:1.
mk11 Posted May 8, 2017 Posted May 8, 2017 Great eye for detail I can't remember seeing anything like that cylinder thing on the left front of the engine bay on any real mustang or falcon. Maybe it was unique to the car monogram researched? mike
afx Posted May 8, 2017 Author Posted May 8, 2017 Thanks Mike, not sure what it is supposed to be but I am leaving it in place as a catch can for the oil breather vent tubes I'll install later.
espo Posted May 8, 2017 Posted May 8, 2017 If you're thinking of the object toward the front of the engine from the oil filter I believe it's the fuel pump and the "can" attached to the bottom would be the fuel filter. If this is correct it is a screw on affair with a disposable filter inside.
