SSNJim Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 I see a lot of pre-1933 cars with track noses. Where do they come from? Are there readily available kits with them, resin, or scratch-built?
Richard Bartrop Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 Revell's '29 Ford Pickup has one as an option, and the Model Car Garage has some resin noses.
Ace-Garageguy Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 Unfortunately, the Revell piece noted is ugly (in my not-so-humble opinion...and this is NOT my model...) The MCG piece noted above is a fair rendition of this, and to my eye, is MUCH better looking... One of my own favorites for scratchbashing comes from this vintage kit... ...and scales up very well for '20s and ''30s cars... Another nice nose comes in this kit... ...and also works well on other bodies...
Foxer Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 (edited) This is a track nose I used but I don't know what kit it's from. I suspect I got it in some junkyard parts. Maybe the photos will spark someone's memory. Tho opening looks close to the Midget Racer Bill showed. I liked the grill opening on this one better than most I see. Edited July 27, 2017 by Foxer

Looks to be the nose from the old Monogam "Don Edmunds Supermodified" ---A CRA car that was the cover car on an issue of Hot Rod Magazine almost at the time (1967 or 1968) that the kit was released. That piece looks like the one from the AMT Grant King sprint car. Unfortunately that kit doesn't include a grille to go with it. The 1:1 sprints didn't have grilles by then. The Monogram Eighties sprint cars don't even have the nose, as the 1:1 cars of the period didn't have them.
MeatMan Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 I see a lot of pre-1933 cars with track noses. Where do they come from? Are there readily available kits with them, resin, or scratch-built?I've been looking for one myself.I only see a grille on MCG's site.Altered States has one with the grille for $6.00. but they have a $25 min order requirement.I've been thinking about another Austin so maybe I'll just pull the trigger on both!Good luck Jim.
Jantrix Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 Here's the Revell Pickup piece that Richard mentioned. As Bill said it's not the best. I used it here and although I liked it well enough when I was building this kit, in hindsight I don't care for it. Perhaps if it was less deep.
Rocking Rodney Rat Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 The Altered States track nose is nice. http://www.alteredstatesmodels.com/images/TrackTNose.jpgThe grille insert is not plated, but could be done by ChromeTech, Little Motor Kar Co or others.
SSNJim Posted July 28, 2017 Author Posted July 28, 2017 Thanks for all the info. There's a lot more options than I thought. Bill, that purple 34 is a nice looking car.I too went on to MCG's site, and only saw the nose grille. I'm still in the early planning stages, so I've got a while to figure out what to do.
Richard Bartrop Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 It's not obvious, but there should be some fine print that says, "Includes resin nose" or words t that effect. People have also made noses out of hoods from later model cares. Here's one made from two '40 ford hoods.

I was looking again today for another source for a nose, and it seems Replicas and Miniatures of Maryland has a nose as well. I've never bought from him, as the only way to order is by phone but I just might go that route because he also has a quick change rear end I need. He's highly regarded by many. This pic is from a site that has some of his parts displayed but is not his site. Mr. Norm Veber, 410.768.3648
Tom Geiger Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 Awhile back (I think it was on this board) someone posted how to create a track nose from two old pickup truck back fenders. I tried it out, and didn't like the results at all! I think this one looks like it's from the movie Cars! If you recognize the model you know I didn't use the nose!
SSNJim Posted July 28, 2017 Author Posted July 28, 2017 Thanks, Dennis. I'll check with him. He's local, and is at the MAMA club meetings I go to occasionally and other model events. I'll check it out next time I'm there.
