Havent made alot of progress lately, I semi stopped to participate in a Instragram 1 month build, now that its over its back to the Soviet Silvia!

Made up a bunch of hoses & wiring, Managed to get the engine mounted to the chassis, now lots of auxiliary stuff needs to be made / added before moving on to the interior.

Attention Cannonballers.

Guys, I have a neat idea for next year’s Cannonball. Hear me out.

2019 is the next running of the Peking to Paris Rally. For those that haven’t heard of it, it’s a rally that began in the early 1900’s and was discontinued for some time but recently revived. Only cars prior to 1976 are allowed. It starts in China, goes up through Mongolia, through the length of Russia, into western Europe, then eastern Europe to finish in Paris to wine, women and song. It takes about a month to complete. There are several classes. I’m attaching a .pdf with the rules.

Now I know an organized race is hard to stomach for such hardened vehicular outlaws such as ourselves, but I think this might be a fun alternative for next year’s run. Please do some Google searching on some P2P racers, it looks like a great time with some truly unique racers. I’ve been planning a model of a P2P racer recently, and it occurred to me it might be a fun Cannonball.

Please check out the website and the rules and let me know what you think. This is very likely the toughest automotive endurance race on the planet. I think its time we put our stamp on it.

I believe so. However as a rally, it's not all in one non-stop race. It's 33 days of time trials and legs to the next time trial location. So it's cumulative time in the drivers seat.

I agree about the new race part. It would not be the Cannonball Run. It would be something like the MCM Peking to Paris Rally brought to you by the Cannonball Drivers Association. And there would not be a Cannonball Run next year running concurrently, so you won't have to choose one or the other if your build time is as limited as mine has been lately. I'm really amazed that I finished my racer this year. It's been crazy at my farm.

Lastly, this deviation from our normal runs will be an exception, not the rule. The year following we'll be back terrorizing  the streets of America.

Peking to Paris?

I'd be thinking of something like this...

stal2.jpg

https://www.kitformservices.com/standard.html

Yes, i've awoken from hibernation now the weather's warming up down here.  I've been working on the Bugatti's engine and i've built a DOHC cylinder head and a sheet metal blower manifold for it.

I'm also scratching up a manual transmission and will then get to work on the chassis which is going to need some rearrangement and reinforcement if it's going to take the 4wd and Independent suspension.

I haven't had time to browse all the posts since I was last here but what I have seen all look to be very promising contenders for second.

:D

That shouldn't be necessary. We go around the Middle East. Nothing puts the damper on a rally like a rowdy group of jihadies.

Fred it's good to see you back. We were fixing to contact the Australian authorities to see if you'd been eaten by a rabid wombat. Looking forward to seeing the Bugatti take shape. Get to it.

Well maybe not jihadies but you are running through the Mongol Hordes and across the wilds of Siberia for a good portion of the race. This looks like a "gentlemen's" race but a large portion seems to be on unpaved roads and in crazy weather conditions.   I would feel a lot more comfortable with some serious truck around me!  Perhaps just as a support vehicle if nothing else. Perhaps an old WWII Dodge power wagon would be a good choice!

Quite right. So horsepower and handling will take a back seat to ride height, traction, stability and torque. Fuel economy even. With three classes, there are a lot of options. There are build rules but they are rather loose. The more I read about this rally, the more I want to do it in real life. If I ever win the lottery, I'll be there with bells on.

Please chime in here racers, unless I get a whole lot of no thank you's, this is likely gonna be next years run.

If I do get enough negative reaction, I will honor the groups wishes and a normal Cannonball CBP will be run.

What surprises me are the number of very expensive "classic" cars in this rallye.  I suspect it is more about finishing rather than how fast you did it. Kind of an old style adventure.  I also would love to do this the first year after I won the lottery!  Perhaps we could share driving duties? Perhaps a Porsche?

Pat I'd say that doing anything besides following the actual rules of the P2P would be wrong.

As for stock - not hardly - it's more of a period race car. Check out this '40 Ford that placed third in 2013. http://peking2paris2013.com/car/

Thanks Rob , got it now. This would give me a good excuse to build something I've been wanting to.

The Wombats are fine, its the Drop Bears you've got to watch out for.

Enough of next year.  I've been bracing the Bugatti chassis (as stock it'd be a bit of a flexi flyer).  That's a 14:71 Top Fuel blower hanging off the side and the early Hemi sitting in front of it is to give some sense of perspective - this thing is f**kin' enormous!

I'm almost ready for paint but it looks like it will be raining here for the foreseeable future. I'm running out of things to do with the body in primer. I need to get it attached to the chassis to get the final tire fitment and finish the engine plumbing.

Bugatti's front suspension is coming along.  There's a diff nailed in place and upper and lower A arms are built.  Coil-overs are next.
I can't start on the rear until I get the front completed as I need the ride height set.

Been making some good progress lately. The turbo position was difficult, they keep getting knocked off, then weren't on the right angle / symmetrical / height etc, but I'm pretty happy with them now. Once I had them in the right position I could then finish the piping, made them up, painted them, Molotov chrome pen & then a healthy coat of clear brown. these parts didn't need to be perfect as they were mostly buried deep in the engine bay. Once the piping was done then everything else could be added, Got the exhaust mounted too, now on to the cockpit! Other progress made was wet sanding the body to get it nice & level & then its been clearcoat with Alclads Matte clear coat. I'll get some better pics of the body tonight.

For next year I havnt been able to stop thinking about what i want to do ( Thanks Jantrix) but now I've pretty much made a decision, now just need to look at sourcing what I need. I think its a really cool idea! "Cannonball Abroad - Pekang to Paris" could be a good title...
