1/18 MPC Hydro-Vee Boat

I'm pretty sure it's been mentioned a few times this boat is close to 1/18 scale, but it's listed as 1/25, so we'll see once someone can measure it in hand.

It is in fact close to 1/18 unfortunately, but a cool kit none the less. I don't collect 1/18 but have a few muscle cars from my late father that would look good towing it.

Yes. It will be interesting to see if the raised "Chrysler Outboard" nameplate have been removed and the engine cover is now smooth.

That was my thought, too, or at least to the 1/20 MPC '70 AMX...at least it's in the extended Mopar family.

The Chrysler badge on the rear sides is gone too. The boats, motors and trailers were all made and marketed by Chrysler Marine Products Division.

Curiously, they named their boat models after their car models like: Polara, Fury, Sport Fury, Sport Satellite, Valiant.

The kit boat appears to be a Charger 151, probably a 1968. The Charger came in a 118, 151 or a 183 length (11'8", 15'1", 18'3")

If we subtract a 1/2" from the advertised length of the kit boat for the engine overhang we end up with 10" which scales up to a 15' boat, making the kit boat a Charger 151.

I just found a picture of the instruction sheet from the original issue on the net. It identifies the boat as a Charger 183. The box says that the model is 10 1/2 inches long. If all that is correct, the scale calculates out to just a little shy of 1:21. Box scale? Nothing that I can find on the original issue says anything about a scale.

Saw the pic of the instructions sheet calling it a 183 and looking at the length behind the front seats compared to the brochure pic of the 183 it would seem to be a Charger 183. Hafta agree with your calculations making it closer to 1/20 scale than 1/18. And 1/20 makes more sense because MPC had other 1/20 kits in the pipeline around the time. It would not make any sense to reduce the masters to an oddball or even an unused scale like 1/18. We'll have to get our greasy little hands on one and measure it but i'm already thinking i'm gonna be a buyer simply because i remember that kit from when it was new and always coveted one.

Just got my first look at one.  The "CHRYSLER" lettering is still on the engine cover

Hmm. 1/20 scale... I wonder if the trailer could be adapted to the Lindberg Century Coronado? That's a 21-footer in 1/25 scale, which means it should be a hair over 10" long. You'd need smaller wheels and a double axle setup, but I have those parts from the Fireball 500 trailer.

If anyone has this kit (old or new) could you please tell me the trailer's overall width?

ETA: anyone else notice something odd about the box art... where's the skipper?

4 1/4 inches wide between the fenders, 5 1/4 including the fenders.

Here's some built-up pics.

Very simple kit, but it has some possibilities as a companion to a 1/18 diecast or 1/20 kit.  

I'm envisioning this one behind a Big Bad Blue 1/20 '70 AMX

I owe you an apology.  I should have dug out my Lindberg/Pyro boats and tried it out, but stupid me didn't think of it before sending the kit to South Bend!

Is this built with the new reissue? Or an original kit? It is gorgeous. I can't wait to get my hands on one. I hope that someone will show us what this kit looks like unbuilt too. A good kit review with photos of the unbuilt contents of the box. And it would be nice to know if there is anything to watch out for in building this kit? 

It would also be interesting to see the above with a 1/20 or 1/18 scale model car or truck, for comparison. Will it look good behind my MPC 1/20 1970 AMX?
