James2 Posted November 11, 2018 Posted November 11, 2018 (edited) Well the winter weather has arrived and for me that means full build time. It's pretty tough to paint in the house so I'll keep building and waiting for warmer days. This is the 40 Ford Standard kit from Revell. I chopped about 4 scale inches out of the top and dropped the chassis as far as I could. It's shaved and smoothed and just about ready for some real primer. I have found that a light sanding coat really help get the body right. My old eyes are not what they once were. I guess that's what they mean by "going dim"... I scribed new door panels and the tail lights are going to be from a 63 'vette. The gray is Tamiya brush-on primer, it works well for small scratches and joint filler. Phildaupho Posted November 12, 2018 Posted November 12, 2018 Nicely done lowering of a difficult to chop top. Going to be a very authentic period looking custom.
James2 Posted November 13, 2018 Author Posted November 13, 2018 Thanks guys, I’m still smoothing the sail panels out. Then I’ll add the drip rail back on. In the meantime I’m putting some chassis to it.

James2 Posted November 16, 2018 Author Posted November 16, 2018 Thought I might share an inside look at how I went about this chop, you can see where the cuts were made. One thing I did wrong is the vertical window cuts should have been closer to the outside of the body. This would have eliminated the need for that filler piece at the lower corners. I did this once before and it lined up so well hardly any filler was needed except to smooth the sail panels. The diagram below has been shared before but if you study the plan and follow the steps you'll be pleased with the results...
James2 Posted November 21, 2018 Author Posted November 21, 2018 (edited) I saw a picture of a Blown Flatty and thought that would be perfect! So with a little imagineering and spare parts this is what I came up with. I think it will work just fine... Edited November 21, 2018 by James2
Force Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 One of the nicest chops I have seen on this body style, great job so far.
James2 Posted November 23, 2018 Author Posted November 23, 2018 Thanks for the comments, here is a little mock up before final primer.
James2 Posted December 2, 2018 Author Posted December 2, 2018 (edited) Progress on the 40, the engine, bay and interior are nearly complete. I intended to do a candy blue over the silver leaf but know I'm thinking clear coating and accent the wheels blue. Edited December 2, 2018 by James2
mod3l Lover Posted December 3, 2018 Posted December 3, 2018 I love it Rooster!! The flattie is perfect also. Watching the rest of this is going to be fun!!! David S.
James2 Posted December 4, 2018 Author Posted December 4, 2018 Pretty simple interior, Krylon grey with semi gloss clear and the dash is the same silver leaf as the body. Molotow chrome, BMF and black wash were used also. Instead of placing the newspaper decal, for a more realistic look, I cut it out and wrinkled it a bit then glued it inplace.
TECHMAN Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 Beautiful job of chopping the top, and the old "flattie"...…. WAY TOO COOL!!!!! DJ
geetee66 Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 Top job on that chop! looking really good mate can't wait to see it under glass ?
James2 Posted December 4, 2018 Author Posted December 4, 2018 Thanks Guy, Ray and David. You too DJ glad you chimed in, your engine knowledge and approval means alot.
