I own a 2000 Jeep Cherokee.I try to keep in good shape. My heater core went a few months back after I found antifreeze on my floors..My friend and I were gonna try to fix it ourselves.Well after seeing the incredible mess of the job,it was good we both agreed it was better to take it to my other friend's shop. The job took about a week, and a 1/2,but there were the holidays.Anyway I took some pics of the job.Its amazing to me what a pain in the azz this job really turned out to be..I should've just bought in a portable plug in heater.:o,and wore a stupid hat.Suppoused to get it back tomorrow.I hope?IMG_6627.JPG.a3f332474c37e42407935aa188cc49c0.JPG

Yup, I had my heater core done on the PT Cruiser convertible and it was the same deal.  I did the A/C evaporator at the same time.  Cost me $1200.

I'd rather pay up and observe a job like this one!

Yea,we did the AC Evaporater too.The good thing is it's only costing me around $750.Its just shocking and scary to see the interior of my poor Jeep like that..:D

Yea, but the good thing is it's somebody else's problem!  I'd rather be a spectator in this activity!

Oh for sure. And I have no complaints about with this Jeep. This heater core is the only big job I had to fix on this thing.I think they are great trucks.Hope to drive it for a bunch of years.

When we did it on my '98, Dad wanted nothing to do with the airbags and said he'd rather pay somebody to do the work vs deal with bags going off. Just had it replaced on my 200, but since I bought the lifetime extended warranty, I paid the $100 deductable and let the dealer do the work. I don't think they went that far on the 200,  the center console is better reinstalled and the dust on the dash was the same as when I dropped it off.

I remember my Dad replacing the heater core on a couple of older cars back in the 80s--a '68 Cougar and a '69 Mustang.   Mostly involved removing the glove box...way simpler on older cars than newer cars I would think.    Never had to deal with it on a modern car...the A/C and heater still worked on my '00 Jeep at 170k when I traded it.

I remember my Mom's Explorer had an issue w/ heater blend door, got that fixed at the dealer back around 2005.

Yea the older cars were so much easier to fix this problem.Like I said, what a pain in the butt. But I just got a message from the shop, that after a week and 1/2,the job is finally done, and I'll be picking it up later today.:D

They're made to be easy to put together, not to be easy to take apart...

Yes. Little things like changing headlight bulbs is a non trivial task on many modern vehicles like my '14 Jeep.

changing the bulbs on one of the renault laguna's is a major job. A load of parts from the engine bay need to be removed just to get enough space to get your hand in, and removing the headlight means taking the bumper off so there's no time saving. The local renault garage ended their contract due to how bad they are to work on

Well you would think that auto makers would make things easier on today's cars, but nope,it's just the opposite.I understand today's cars are all computerized, but that just makes things harder to work on..Like I said,if I knew how much labor was involved in fixing the core,I just would've gotten a portable heater to drive around with this winter.Im just glad I'm getting the car back finally.

I remember my heater not working on my first car a '60 Ventura and I was cold. I took it to a garage and they wanted $25 to pull the heater core out and look at it. Out of my budget back then. So I took the car home, got dressed for the cold weather and got on the floor to see what I could see. A loose vacuum line (?) so I took the end and put it on where I thought it would go, and PRESTO I had heat. I was a "happy camper" to say the least.

My sister's '06 Cadillac has started having an issue recently w/ the heater..the defroster still works, but nothing blows out the dash or floor vents.  But the seat heater still works...good thing it hasn't been too cold lately.  She's been commuting in it lately since her Equinox has been in the dealer body shop the last month after getting hit in the rear at a light.

Well I've finally got my Jeep back, and I have heat:D.It felt pretty good, especially since it was only in the 20s today:lol:.And the car is no longer a disaster area inside. Now let's wait for some good old snow wheeling.

I've done that on a few Fox Mustang's and it's no fun.

Are these the ones where you end up removing the right front fender to get at them?

Hopefully you don't develop any mystery squeaks and rattles now that everything was torn apart.

Yea that was a concern of mine, but so far, everything seems to be nice a quiet.I guess I'll have to wait and see.

Which is what drove most mechanics crazy when they got a comeback after doing one of these jobs. Tended to happen more when it was a warranty job versus customer paid job.

No , it's drop the entire dash, steering wheel, take out console....etc. Only because they had AC. Non AC Fox Mustang's heater core can be had through the glove box area, takes about 30 min, if that....LOL
