iamsuperdan Posted January 20, 2019 Posted January 20, 2019 Well, I've created a thread, so already I'm further ahead than I got last year! This is going to be AMT's White Western Star, which I believe represents a White Western Star 4800. Trailer is AMT's Fruehauf 40ft Exterior Post Van. The truck is the reissue, the trailer appears to be the original issue. These will be built pretty much box stock, although I may add a couple of accessories if all goes according to plan. So here's what I'll be starting with. Boxes open, bags sealed.
tbill Posted January 20, 2019 Posted January 20, 2019 Cool, have built the trailer, and have the truck kit in the hoard. This should be a cool combo?
DRIPTROIT 71 Posted February 2, 2019 Posted February 2, 2019 These are cool trucks! Looking forward to more! Welcome to the Build Off!
iamsuperdan Posted February 3, 2019 Author Posted February 3, 2019 Well, I'm already further ahead than I got on last year's BRBO! Got some initial assembly done on the engine last night. Also need to thank Lucas (trick my mixer) for supplying the sleeper I need. 10/10 would trade with him again.
drinkone2 Posted February 4, 2019 Posted February 4, 2019 I really like the looks of the WWS with a Pete or KW bunk as opposed to the Mercury that comes in the kit. Looking forward to seeing this build come together. Is that the mail order only "California Hauler" sleeper kit from the early 70's?

Looking forward to seeing this build come together. Is that the mail order only "California Hauler" sleeper kit from the early 70's? I have no idea. lolz. I had put out a wanted ad here asking for this style of sleeper, and this is what I traded for. Seeing as how the sleeper has it's own set of instructions, I think it might be. I didn't get any pics, but the engine is done now, and I've started getting the frame and underpinnings assembled. Painting will be a delay though, as I paint in my insulated but unheated garage. As of this morning, it was -27 degrees Celsius. THe warmest it's supposed to get this week is on Thursday, at -17 degrees. So for now, all of my paints are in a box in my basement until it warms up enough.
dodgefever Posted February 4, 2019 Posted February 4, 2019 I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with this one. I almost went for the same kit, but settled on the Mack instead. Stupid question: I guess it's generic enough not to matter either way, but does that Peterbilt sleeper represent an aftermarket one, or did they make their own at that time? I imagine it will look better than the Mercury box - it's always struck me as weird looking, with the cab being so much taller than the sleeper. Most of the reference pics I found have sleepers more like the Pete one.
Rusty92 Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 (edited) Been seeing a lot of Western Stars by me lately. Seem to be coming out of the woodwork. They never die though! I will enjoy this build Edited February 5, 2019 by Rusty92
iamsuperdan Posted February 22, 2019 Author Posted February 22, 2019 So I have most of the initial assembly done on the frame. Engine is done, except for a few touchups. Having said that, I think I'm going to repaint it, as it just doesn't look right to me. The tan turned out darker than expected. Conversely, the engine won't be visible or accessible in the finished product, so I may just leave it.
tbill Posted February 22, 2019 Posted February 22, 2019 Looking good so far! For these engines, I use testors gloss wood enamel, then dull coat it (1241 part number).
tbill Posted February 22, 2019 Posted February 22, 2019 It’s also a western Star, so we are in the same family, lol.
iamsuperdan Posted February 22, 2019 Author Posted February 22, 2019 Actually, your colour looks pretty close to mine. I painted mine a Tamiya colour, some sort of wood tan or something. I think I'll jsut dirty up the steel and aluminum bits and call it a day!
iamsuperdan Posted March 18, 2019 Author Posted March 18, 2019 Haven't had a lot of bench time this month for a variety of reasons. But the weather was beautiful this weekend, and I was finally able to get some painting done. First on the list, the Western Star. Got the frame painted. Edit: these pics suck. lolz. Will fix that this evening.
gotnitro? Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 Looks great Dan ! Really went together well Oh watch out being in Tbills family..he likes to send people squirrels...lol
tbill Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 Lol Jeff, the squirrels seem to have ADD as well......, focus......
iamsuperdan Posted March 28, 2019 Author Posted March 28, 2019 Finally got some better pics last night. Got some bench time in last night, doing some more painting of various things. just about at the point where all I need to do on the chassis is assembly...and some touchups. Will hopefully get the body painted soon.
iamsuperdan Posted April 19, 2019 Author Posted April 19, 2019 Haven't had much bench time this month, so no progress on this one, other than a little bit of paint.
TECHMAN Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 Maybe you'll get a little warm weather pretty soon...… Like the progress!!! DJ
iamsuperdan Posted May 10, 2019 Author Posted May 10, 2019 Ugh. Another month of no progress. New puppy, house renos, and some other stuff have severely impacted bench time. Back at it soon. I hope!
