landman Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 (edited) A while back, I had purchased a gluebomb version of the AMT turbine. I dissasembled it to refinish it . Then I started looking for images of the real unit. I was planning to really jazz it up with pipes and foil and other turbiney stuff like this. All I could find is photos of the model and old grainy black & white from period articles. And this one of a unit on display in the Delco-Remy section of A Rolls-Royce heritage museum. So plain green it is. Edited October 25, 2020 by landman

I really like how you have it sitting on the pallet on the forklift. Maybe you could continue the diorama with a truck sitting under an overhead crane, waiting to get this engine installed. Have the hood assembly sitting off to the side on a cart. Radiator leaning against a wall. You get the idea.
redneckrigger Posted May 12, 2019 Posted May 12, 2019 Absolute top quality work, as always Pat. Thanks for sharing them!

Oldmopars Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 (edited) The 60's-80's at least GM and Chrysler (maybe Ford too) tried to make the turbine engine work in both cars and trucks. The power was never the issue, noise, fuel consumption and finally Emissions killed these things off. There was just no way to get that turbine engine to meet the strict emissions standards for a cost that allows for mass production and a profit. I wish they had been able to make it work, I would love to have a "Jet" powered car or truck. I think the most successful of all the Turbine projects was the 60's Chrysler Turbine cars. They made 55 and "Leased" them to customers to test. They used them all over the USA and logged a Million miles testing them. After the test most of them were destroyed, but a few survived, Jay Leno of course has one of them. Interesting time in Automotive history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_Turbine_Car Edited May 13, 2019 by Oldmopars
PettyKW43 Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 Nice build on the turbine! I bought a factory sealed kit awhile back and have been debating on how to build it ! An original AMT box art build is tempting but I would also like to do the the actual prototype build of the real truck. As done on the box art I will have to do two trucks and I have only one kit so far!
gatorincebu Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 Pat, that engine would be great on display in your shop ! Be Well Gator
landman Posted July 3, 2019 Author Posted July 3, 2019 (edited) Marc, it actually is, along with the Pratt & Whitney. Except maybe not in the same spot you had in mind. Edited October 25, 2020 by landman
Brian Austin Posted July 5, 2019 Posted July 5, 2019 There's also the Boeing-Kenworth partnership that experimented with turbines. Lighter weight and more compact design were said to be advantages, but were offset by poor economy among other issues. Also, three American LaFrance fire trucks were built with turbines.
